TLK Compleat Character List

by Criswell

Greetings, my friends. This list is in chronological order (in sections of the books, comics and movies), then in order of appearance and importance. It includes name meanings- all Swahili unless otherwise noted. It does not include any fan-created characters. Characters from canon Disney works that have been named by fans are kept to a minimum. You won’t find the leaf-cutter ant that steps forward with the other foot here. (And no, don't go looking for him- I made him up. Or her- who cares.)

Section 1- The Stuph of Legend

Name: unknown
Name Meaning: Are you kidding?
Species: Lion
Appearances: “A False Ancestor” (Swedish comic)
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: unknown
Close Relations: Father of three sons (unnamed), great-grandfather of Mohatu.
Info: “King” Joe in the comic claims to be him. He is said to be Mufasa’s great-great-great-grandfather, thus Mohatu’s great-grandfather. Two knowledgeable parrots say that during his reign hyenas attempted to take over, he discovered the Elephant Graveyard, survived a giant earthquake, and had 3 sons. Joe himself, impersonating this king when Simba thinks he fell from the stars, which he knows nothing about (except the hyena war, perhaps), claims he roared so loud 3 trees fell over.

Name: Old Fearless Buzz
Name Meaning: none
Species: Meerkat
Appearances: Cut scene from The Lion King 1½
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Monobrow.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Legendary meerkat from old times. Successfully fought off a hyena, but forgot that they travel in packs. So he’s dead. Included because his legendary status makes him fit easily into the bigger story.

Section 2- The Early Kings

Name: Mohatu
Name Meaning: unknown
Species: Lion
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: A lot like Mufasa, except much more bright orange-brown, and more sympathetic concerning his facial expressions.
Close Relations: Father of Ahadi.
Info: Not much is known about Mohatu except what Mufasa tells Simba in this book. He settled among the animals of his kingdom dispute concerning water rations during a great drought, as well as what seems to be prejudice against each other. He discovered the Great River, which appears to be a part of the oasis Timon and the meerkats make their home. He ruled for a long time, and died very old one winter’s night, and his star is the biggest and brightest in the sky, apparently because he was such a great king.

Name: Lion
Name Meaning: none
Species: What do you think?
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Pretty much a perfect clone of Scar, except with similar colored fur as Mohatu.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: A selfish lion during Mohatu’s reign who hogged what was left of the waterhole, drinking more than his share. Zebra doesn’t trust him.

Name: Crocodile
Name Meaning: none
Species: duh…
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Green scales, and orange/yellow eyes that periodically change appearance.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Extremely sensitive, his literal crocodile tears are completely honest. While his appearance is supposedly fearsome, he actually isn’t fearsome at all (he doesn’t look it in the illustration, either). He’s sad because he has no friends since everyone’s afraid of him, due to him biting Hippo’s tail once. I wonder what he eats.

Name: Hippo
Name Meaning: none
Species: :P
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Your usual hippo.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Hippo is afraid of Crocodile. I guess tail-biting is rather traumatic.

Name: Wildebeest
Name Meaning: none
Species: I’ve got three more of these after this one to go through…
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Generic wildebeest.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Is afraid of Hippo.

Name: Zebra
Name Meaning: none
Species: la de da…
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Typical zebra. Distrustful expression.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Is afraid of Lion. Rather competitive and headlong.

Name: Giraffe
Name Meaning: none
Species: *whistles*
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: A giraffe. Disney seems to like giving giraffes long eyelashes.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Giraffe doesn’t really do anything.

Name: Cheetah
Name Meaning: none
Species: The last one! Yay!
Appearances: The Brightest Star
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Lighter-colored underside. Sparse spots, hardly any on his tail.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: As with all cheetahs, a speedster. In a race to the Great River, Zebra kicks him in the chest, no doubt breaking some ribs. Mohatu later carries him on his back.

Name: Ahadi
Name Meaning: covenant, promise, vow
Species: Lion
Appearances: A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: According to the text, he has green eyes and a black mane. The illustrations show him as a cross between Simba and Mufasa. I can’t decide which I like better.
Close Relations: Son of Mohatu, mate of Uru, father of Mufasa and Taka.
Info: Ahadi seems to be a rather proud king, though not necessarily big-headed. He doesn’t seem to much like Taka, probably because of his rude manner, but doesn’t wholly hate him, like Mufasa does later on. One fan-created concept is Taka got his scar from an angry Ahadi, but isn’t widely accepted because the idea of Ahadi being an abusive father is disliked. But it’s still thought that he liked Mufasa better.

Name: Uru
Name Meaning: diamonds- in cards
Species: Lioness
Appearances: A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Unknown. It’s usually thought that she resembles Scar, except more conventionally pretty.
Close Relations: Mate of Ahadi, mother of Mufasa and Taka.
Info: She’s pretty much absent from the story, searching for a source of food and water during a drought. The Great River must be dry too. Many fans think that she liked Taka much better than anyone else, encouraging him to not give up hope in the possibility of being king.

Name: Mufasa
Name Meaning: Unknown. Name of the last king of the Bagada people of pre-colonial Kenya.
Species: Lion
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: The Lion King, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- James Earl Jones (speaking) Original Broadway cast- Samuel E. Wright (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: Big mane, big chin, big muscles, big teeth. Very regal and intimidating. Small eyes.
Close Relations: Son of Ahadi and Uru, brother of Scar, mate of Sarabi, father of Simba.
Info: Probably one of the greatest kings in the history of the Pridelands, at least according to Disney. You never really get to see if his rule is just or fair, but he seems a nice enough guy. No doubt he could scare the stuffing out of anyone in the kingdom, if need be. Wise and caring, and definitely not blind to Scar’s malicious nature.

Name: Taka/“Scar”
Name Meaning: piece of cloth OR junk, rubbish, worthless thing OR want, wish, inquiry, request
Species: Lion
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: The Lion King- Jeremy Irons (speaking and singing) Jim Cummings (additional singing) Original Broadway cast- John Vickery (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: Dark brown fur, slick black mane, heavy-lidded bright green eyes, arched eyebrows. Long and lanky to the point of being weak and thin, but knows how to use his grace and poise to his full potential to attract the ladies. All the ingredients you need for one of the coolest villains around. Oh, and he has a scar. Like I really need to tell you.
Close Relations: Son of Ahadi and Uru, brother of Mufasa, uncle of Simba, mate of Zira, father of (for most fans) Nuka, Kovu and Vitani.
Info: Taka is Scar’s birth name, but was later in his life given the nickname “Scar”, for obvious reasons. Jealous of Mufasa getting the throne, and often thought to have been psychologically damaged after getting his scar as a young cub. Suave, sexy, and totally evil. Sometimes his flamboyancy makes him look as if he were gay, but he seems to thoroughly enjoy the ladies according to the Broadway play. Fans like to make him a sympathetic character, though not completely- his problem is legitimate, but his grudge is petty.

Name: Rafiki
Name Meaning: friend, comrade
Species: Mandrill, baboon, or some combination thereof
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: The Lion King, Timon and Pumbaa Show, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, The Lion King 1½- Robert Guillaume (speaking and singing) Original Broadway cast- Tsidii Le Loka (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: Old, bald (on top at least), and hunched over. Crazy eyes and smile.
Close Relations: Cousin of Jelani (specifically third cousin once removed) and Karibu.
Info: Shaman of the Pridelands. Though he may be old and weary (he has a bad knee), he can still pack a wallop with his kung-fu action if necessary. Extremely wise, but in the sense of the idiot savant, since he appears to just be a crazy old coot of a monkey on the surface. Often pops up in a bizarre manner to teach his wisdom in a rather roundabout way. Has the ability to read omens and communicate with kings of the past.

Name: Banzai
Name Meaning: skulk, lurk- according to TLK WWW Archive
Species: Hyena
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: The Lion King, The Lion King 1½- Cheech Marin (speaking) Original Broadway cast- Stanley Wayne Mathis (speaking and singing) Timon and Pumbaa Show- Rob Paulsen (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Dark coloring around muzzle, thick eyebrows.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: The first of the hyena trio. These three hang out together, telling bad jokes, getting into mischief, and hating the bossy lions, who outlaw killing for sport. Scar recruits them to do his dirty work, something he partly, if not entirely, regrets. Tried and true bumbling minion characters. Banzai is witty (sort of). Banzai and Shenzi are sometimes suspected by fans to be a couple.

Name: Shenzi
Name Meaning: uncouth, barbarous, savage (Full name- Shenzi Marie Predatora Veldetta Jacquelina Hyena. How Timon knew is anyone's guess.)
Species: Hyena
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: The Lion King, The Lion King 1½- Whoopi Goldberg (speaking) Original Broadway cast- Tracy Nicole Chapman (speaking and singing) Timon and Pumbaa Show- Tress MacNeille (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Heavy-lidded eyes, loose bangs extending from mane covering forehead, overbite.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Shenzi is sassy, and appears to be the leader of the group, as she often takes command in more serious situations.

Name: Ed
Name Meaning: Edward (Old English)- wealthy guardian, Edgar (Old English)- wealthy spearman, Edwin (Old English)- prosperous friend, Edmond (Old English)- wealthy protector, Edison (Old English)- Edward’s son, Eddy (Scandinavian)- unresting; apparently a joke on Ed McMahon.
Species: Hyena
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: The Lion King, The Lion King 1½, Timon and Pumbaa Show- Jim Cummings (speaking) Original Broadway cast- Kevin Cahoon (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Bulging, crossed eyes, large ears with bite marks, big tongue, crazy smile.

Info: Ed is retarded, and is known for his wild, maniacal laughter.

Name: Zuzu
Name Meaning: foolish, ignorant, inexperienced
Species: Hornbill
Appearances: A Tale Of Two Brothers
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Unknown. There’s a tiny shot of an unidentified Zazu-look-alike in the book, which could be Zuzu. I personally like fanartist’s Zazu’s interpretation.
Close Relations: Mother of Zazu.
Info: Ahadi’s majordomo. She seems to be a pleasant person, very maternal.

Name: Boma

Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Big, hulking buffalo, with angry pale-pink eyes.

Physical Attributes: Blue feathers, white belly, black wingtips. Thick eyebrows and a discriminating expression.
Close Relations: Son of Zuzu. Has two unnamed troublesome relatives.
Info: Mufasa and Simba’s majordomo. As a youngster, Zazu is an incompetent, talkative nuisance, but soon learns to distinguish between what’s real news and what’s not, though he’s not above some juicy gossip. Proud and pompous, despite his size, he’s rather snobby and looks down on lowlifes, and is not afraid to use his dry, biting wit. Easy flustered and somewhat panicky.

Name: Sarabi
Name Meaning: mirage
Species: Lioness
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- Friends In Need
Voice Actors: The Lion King- Madge Sinclair (speaking) Original Broadway cast- Gina Breedlove (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Dark biege to brown fur. Large, heavy build. Heavy-lidded eyes.

Info: Cool, calm and collected in most situations. Proud, loving mother. Her build suggests that she’s an expert hunter.

Name Meaning: grin, laugh, mock, tease
Species: Elephant
Appearances: How True, Zazu
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: A little bigger and older than Lulu.
Close Relations: Son of Pembe.
Info: Cheka seems to be a bit of a smart-guy. Hatches the plan called “Get Zazu”, where the other young animals spread false rumors to get Zazu in trouble. Likes to spray his friends with blasts of water from his trunk.

Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Cute little ostriches.

Name: Jambo and Kwaheri
Name Meaning: (Jambo) greetings, hello OR circumstance, matter, state of affairs, difficulty (Kwaheri) goodbye
Species: Uncertain species of small primate, labeled as “monkey”
Appearances: How True, Zazu, Nala’s Dare (Kopa scenes)
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: They’re monkeys.
Close Relations: They’re likely brothers.
Info: Two monkeys with the annoying tendency to speak in a rapid series of synonyms. With Disney’s minor-character-equals-immortality blessing, they can be seen gossiping in a tree early in Mufasa’s reign, and later tormenting Kopa by daring him to do stupid stuff.

Name: Simba
Name Meaning: lion OR like a lion- in bravery or cruelty
Species: Lion. Who’da thunk?
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- The Lion King (first part)
Voice Actors: The Lion King- Jonathan Taylor Thomas (cub, speaking) Jason Weaver (cub, singing) Evan Saucedo (singing, "The Morning Report") Matthew Broderick (adult, speaking) Joseph Williams (adult, singing) Original Broadway cast- Scott Irby-Ranniar (cub, speaking and singing) Jason Raize (adult, speaking and singing) Timon and Pumbaa Show- Cam Clarke (speaking) The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- Matthew Broderick (speaking) Cam Clarke (singing) The Lion King 1½- Matt Weinberg (cub, speaking) Matthew Broderick (teen and adult, speaking)

Close Relations: Son of Mufasa and Sarabi, nephew of Scar, mate of Nala, father of Kopa and Kiara.
Info: Rambunctious is the word to describe cub Simba. He’s curious, adventurous, and all too ready to become king and boss people around. And he’s got a great singing voice. Of course, having your father suddenly die in a stampede doesn’t help much. He runs away literally and emotionally from the Pridelands, and picks up a happy, carefree lifestyle. As a teenager, he’s not too much different, but is a little more “cool”, I guess. When responsibility creeps up on him and he reacts accordingly, he learns of the busy life kings have, but in attempt to emulate his father, does a good job of it. But after the mess of Scar killing Mufasa and Zira killing Kopa (as fans usually believe), Simba is left being distrustful of strangers and overprotective of his loved ones. His prejudice against Scar’s followers causes trouble, and only when another slap in his face comes his way does he really become a complete king.

Name: Timothy/“Mousey”

Species: Lioness

Physical Attributes: Biege-to-creamy colored fur. Turquoise eyes. Rather attractive as an adult. Admired by female fans, and ogled at by male fans.
Close Relations: Daughter of Sarafina, mate of Simba, mother of Kopa and Kiara.
Info: She has a bit of an attitude as a cub, but it subsides partially when she matures. More courageous than most lionesses, she can stand up to Scar without showing fear. Cares greatly about the state of the pride. Being close cubhood friends with Simba, love inevitably blossoms. She seems less worried about how things will turn out than Simba during his reign. Can be successfully defiant when she puts her mind to it.

Name: Sarafina

Physical Attributes: Extremely thin and bony. Comically large muzzle.

When Simba proves to be too inquisitive about his reign, and two parrots who know all about the kings of the past show up, he runs off before he gets into a heap of trouble, never to be seen again. Voice Actors: The Lion King 1½- Julie Cavner (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Pleasantly plump and short.
Close Relations: Mother of Timon, sister or sister-in-law of Uncle Max.
Info: Ma loves her little Timony-wony! Unfortunately for Timon, she has a tight grip hugging, and has a tendency to mess with his hair, to the point of giving him ridiculous hairstyles throughout his life. Single-handedly proved meerkats are Jewish by using the word meshugginah. It’s also worth mentioning that her voice is provided by Marge Simpson. Timon has a father in cut scenes, but was later dropped and reduced (possibly) to the less important role of Uncle Max.

Name: Uncle Max
Name Meaning: Maxwell (Old English)- important man’s spring or pool OR Maccus’ well, Maximilian (Latin)- greatest in excellence
Species: Meerkat
Appearances: The Lion King 1½
Voice Actors: The Lion King 1½- Jerry Stiller (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Greyish and musty-colored fur. Big nose and wrinkles.
Close Relations: Uncle of Timon, brother or brother-in-law of Ma.
Info: Pessimistic and old-fashioned. He doesn’t approve of Timon’s rebellious nature.

Name: Timon
Name Meaning: variation of Greek name “Timothy” meaning honoring God
Species: Meerkat
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- The Lion King 1½
Voice Actors: The Lion King- Nathan Lane (speaking and singing) Original Broadway cast- Max Casella (speaking and singing) Timon and Pumbaa Show- Quinton Flynn (speaking, 1995) Kevin Schon (speaking, 1996-98) The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, The Lion King 1½- Nathan Lane (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: There’s not anything particularly distinctive about Timon’s appearance besides his exaggerated expressions.
Close Relations: Son of Ma, nephew of Uncle Max.
Info: An outsider in the meerkat colony, and extremely accident-prone when it comes to digging. Timon isn’t stupid, but he thinks he’s smarter than he really is, often taking Pumbaa’s ideas and making it look like he thought of it. Has an uncontrollable sense of humor. Part of a traditional comedy team- Timon is the smart guy who isn’t exactly smart, Pumbaa is the dumb guy who isn’t exactly dumb, and Simba is the straight man.

Name: Iron Joe
Name Meaning: Joseph (Hebrew)- God will increase, He shall add to His powers
Species: Meerkat
Appearances: The Lion King 1½
Voice Actors: The Lion King 1½- uncredited

Species: Meerkat
Appearances: The Lion King 1½
Voice Actors: The Lion King 1½- uncredited (Stumpy and Swifty) Jason Rudofsky (Flinchy, speaking)
Physical Attributes: Unknown.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Could be any of the meerkats. The voices saying “here” when Ma takes roll aren’t matched with any mouths moving.

Name: Pumbaa
Name Meaning: absent-minded, careless, dim-witted, foolish OR gape, stare, to be speechless
Species: Warthog
Appearances: Nearly all. First chronological appearance- The Lion King 1½
Voice Actors: The Lion King, Timon and Pumbaa Show, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, The Lion King 1½- Ernie Sabella (speaking and singing) Original Broadway cast- Tom Alan Robbins (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: Huge cartoony jaw with one square tooth jutting out. Pot belly.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Pumbaa’s origins are unclear. All we really know is that he was a lonely warthog that nobody liked because he smelled so bad. In the TLK 1½ GBA game, Pumbaa is feeling lonely and wants a friend- Rafiki guides him to Timon. When he meets up with Timon, his explosive flatulence becomes an advantage. There is also some T&P Show episodes exploring his and Timon's pasts, but I haven't seen them. Can be rather sensitive, but generally a happy-go-lucky kinda guy. Just don’t call him “pig”.

Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Caramel brown fur, smooth on her head.
Close Relations: Fanartist Kristin O. has made her the mother of Afua and mate of Chumvi.

Name: Chumvi
Name Meaning: salt, sharpness, pungency, salinity
Species: Lion
Appearances: Nala’s Dare
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Milk chocolate brown fur. Large, messy hair tuft.
Close Relations: Fanartist Kristin O. has made him the father of Afua and mate of Kula.
Info: One of Nala’s friends during Scar’s reign. Chumvi has an ego. He thinks lions are better than any other creature, and the Pridelanders are better than any other pride. I’ve seen several fans thinking of him as a lady’s man as an adult, which makes sense since he has such a big head.

Name: Ni
Name Meaning: I am and other short words like that
Species: Lion
Appearances: Nala’s Dare
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Smaller than average, and dirty. His mane isn’t fully-grown yet.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: When Ni was old enough to survive on his own, he left his pride. He wanders into the Pridelands and saves Nala from a hyena. Rather concerned with not being flaky. Kula and Nala think that if he groomed his fur, he’d look cute. He is welcome to stay with the pride, but he insists that he wants his own pride, and leaves never to be seen again.

Name: Maji
Name Meaning: water (named by meeee!!!)
Species: Hyena
Appearances: Nala’s Dare
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Sort of a rat-like face, with “freckles”. Kind of a slimy smile.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: One of the hyenas that try to attack Nala, and one of the few hyenas that doesn’t look like a Banzai clone. Named after Mortimer Mouse (Mortimer is an Old French name meaning still water), Mickey Mouse’s rival, whom Maji resembles.

Name: Joka
Name Meaning: large snake, serpent, dragon
Species: Python
Appearances: A Snake In The Grass
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Purple scales. Devious smile.
Close Relations: n/a

Species: Hyena
Appearances: The Lion King (last part)
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Bad teeth and overbite.

Species: Hippo
Appearances: “Simba’s Rain!” (comic)

Name: Monty
Name Meaning: Montague (French)- from the pointed hill, Montana (Latin)- from a mountainous region, Montel (Latin)- mountain (named by meeee!!!)
Species: Python

Close Relations: n/a
Info: Silly python who sneaks up on T&P.

Name: Mrs. Vulture
Name Meaning: none
Species: Some kind of bird
Appearances: “Rain Dance, Shmain Dance!” (comic)
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Looks nothing like a vulture.
Close Relations: Has an unnamed chick.
Info: One of the things needed for Rafiki’s phoney-baloney rain dance is a bunch of vulture feathers. Timon mistakes this bird for one, and gets her feathers by pretending to be a cleaning service. Doesn’t really have a name, but Timon calls her that.

Name: Kopa
Name Meaning: hearts- in card games OR dried cassava, dried manioc OR cheat, defraud
Species: Lion
Appearances: The Lion King: Six New Adventures book collection
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Similar to cub Simba. Brown hair tuft.
Close Relations: Son of Simba and Nala. Technically brother of Kiara.
Info: Simba’s cub at the end of the first movie was originally supposed to be his son. Many book and comic versions refer to the cub as male. Soon after the movie, this book came out telling about Simba’s son and (as the title states) six new stories, four of which are told to Kopa. Kopa is a goofy cub, often doing and saying stupid things. At the end of most of the books, he learns an important lesson that will come in handy when he becomes king. Most fans, though, say that he died still a cub (usually killed by Zira), because of his obvious absence in the movie’s sequel. Disney insists that Kopa now officially doesn’t exist and that the cub at the end of TLK and Kiara are one in the same. In fact, some fans even consider TLK6NA (and everything that isn’t the first movie) as not existing at all, either because it’s too complicated for them to fit it into the bigger story due to plotholes, or they think it’s stupid.

Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Younger than Rafiki, but with less hair on his head. Uncaring expression, strong-looking.
Close Relations: Cousin of Rafiki, nephew of Dalila and Karibu.

Name Meaning: defense, protection, liberation, salvation, redemption, save OR forgive, pardon, release
Species: Lion
Appearances: A Snake In The Grass (Kopa scenes)
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Unknown. There is some fanart of him, which all seem to agree that he’s dark-furred like Tojo or Chumvi.
Close Relations: Fanartist Kristin O. has made him the son of Kula and Chumvi.
Info: He and Kopa split after Afua befriends Beba the cheetah cub. Kopa soon learns to forgive him and become best friends again.

Name: Beba
Name Meaning: carry, transport OR tune- in music
Species: Cheetah
Appearances: A Snake In The Grass (Kopa scenes)
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Unknown. Usually accompanies Afua in fanart, realistically depicting him with the “mane” of fuzzy fur cheetahs get when young.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Afua admires Beba’s prowess concerning running, climbing and jumping.

Name: Leo (2)
Name Meaning: today, now
Species: Lion
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Could either be the large elderly lion in the foreground, the younger adult behind the tree, or the cub with the younger adult. I think it’s the cub.
Close Relations: n/a

Name: Boga
Name Meaning: gourd, pumpkin
Species: Lion
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Could either be the younger adult behind the tree or the cub with him. I think it’s the young adult.

Name: Ngawa
Name Meaning: civet

Close Relations: n/a
Info: Sabini complains the most loudly about Leo’s bragging.

Name: Mega
Name Meaning: break off, divide up
Species: Lion
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: “An old lion with a full mane”. Could either be the large elderly lion in the foreground or the younger adult behind the tree. I think it’s the elderly lion.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: There is dispute over who’s who in the illustration, mostly over Mega and Leo. You’ll probably instantly think the old lion is Mega, since he matches the description. But those who believe the old lion is Leo argue that Leo features more prominently in the book, and Mega doesn’t seem to be making fun of Kopa, while the old lion obviously is. Plus, when Leo makes a second appearance in the text, the old lion shows up in the accompanying illustration. However, this seems too convoluted to me, so I just go with the easier way. This debate can only be settled if the illustrators are contacted.

Name: Babu
Name Meaning: grandfather, ancestor, forebear OR kind, sort, category
Species: Lioness
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: It’s agreed that the little cub rolling around on the ground is Babu.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Babu has only one line, but she seems to be a giggly type of person, since she is described giggling.

Name: Kiboko
Name Meaning: hippopotamus OR whip, lash
Species: Hippo
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Oversized jaws, tiny forehead.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Kiboko is a jerk, hogs the waterhole, and smells bad.

Name: Machufa
Name Meaning: unknown
Species: Antelope

Name: Chewa and Choyo
Name Meaning: (Chewa) giant rock-cod (Choyo) greed, stinginess, miserliness
Species: Vulture
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: One has a bit of feathers falling onto the back of his head and thick, angry ayes, the other’s head is smooth.
Close Relations: Could be brothers.
Info: Two greedy creeps who miss the old days of Scar’s reign when weak animals passed by their trees more often. Chewa is the leader of the other vultures.

Name: Wali
Name Meaning: young woman, maiden OR white pelican, pink-backed pelican OR rice
Species: Vulture
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: unknown

Name: The Buzzard Boyz- Moja, Mbili and Tatu
Name Meaning: (Moja) individual, homogenous OR one (Mbili) two (Tatu) three
Species: Vulture
Appearances: Vulture Shock
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: One has a smooth head and spots, one has Astro Boy-style points on his head, one has scraggly… um… hair.
Close Relations: They’re brothers.
Info: Trio of annoying gangsta bruthas who almost constantly speak in rap, mislabeled as singing. This prompts Kopa to use outdated slang. They’re not terribly bad guys, and help Kopa to escape their fellow vultures.

Section 6- Simba’s Reign: Zira’s Banishment

Name: Kiara
Name Meaning: Kikuyu- a language native to Kenya- word meaning a finger, also an Irish name meaning small and dark, little black one
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, “Birds Of A Feather” (comic)
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- Michelle Horn (cub, speaking) Ashley Edner (cub, growling) Charity Sanoy (cub, singing) Neve Campbell (adult, speaking) Liz Callaway (adult, singing)
Physical Attributes: Her fur is something of a combination of Simba’s and Nala’s, resulting in an apricot-like orange-yellow color. Bright, happy expression and round eyes.
Close Relations: Daughter of Simba and Nala, mate of Kovu. Technically sister of Kopa.
Info: Kiara is a happy person. She loves playing and having a good time. She resents the idea of becoming queen, disliking the responsibilities and no-fun attitude of it. She matures later, and manages to remind her father the importance of unity when the Pridelanders and Outlanders are battling. Often unfairly labeled as an airhead, when all she really is happy-go-lucky and a bit ditzy. She isn’t stupid, but there’s still an unreasonable amount of Kiara-haters.

Name: Kovu
Name Meaning: scar
Species: Lion
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- Ryan O'Donohue (cub, speaking) Jason Marsden (adult, speaking) Gene Miller (adult, singing)
Physical Attributes: Kovu is like Scar turned into a good guy. His mane is more brown, and his eyes and fur are darker, his build is heavier, and his face is generally more conventionally handsome. Thick eyebrows and unusually pronounced tear ducts and/or eyelashes. Distinctive pompadour-like bangs.
Close Relations: Son of Scar (for most) and Zira, brother of Nuka and Vitani, mate of Kiara.
Info: According to Disney, Kovu is definitely not Scar’s son. But most fans don’t believe a word of it. Kovu does not fit in with his devious family. He’s too nice. When he accidentally meets Kiara, a friendship is formed almost instantly, but both sets of parents disapprove. Clip art and other promotional art depict them playing more often than they actually do in the movie, suggesting they met each other in secret as cubs. This is not a fact, as most of the art show other characters present, but it would have helped Zira's plan to get close to the princess. But Zira’s training changes Kovu into a dark soul, intent on nothing else but killing Simba and regaining the throne for Scar’s line. Kiara appears and brings back sunshine into his life and he quickly returns to his original amiable self. Kovu often feels that Scar lives on in him, something he feels ashamed of. When the Outlanders and Pridelanders are finally united, this weight seems to have been lifted.

Name: Zira
Name Meaning: hate, grudge OR to drive away ants with firebrands
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- Suzanne Pleshette (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: Basically a female version of Scar. Nalaesque fur colors. Has a stripe going from the top of her forehead to the back of her neck, and a large hole in her ear, usually the right.
Close Relations: Mate of Scar, mother of Nuka, Kovu and Vitani.
Info: Although it’s unclear if Zira is really the mother of anyone, or even ever spoke directly to Scar, implication suggests that Scar knew her and Nuka and Vitani are her children. She clearly found Scar to be the lion of her dreams, and swayed by his ideas, came to believe that Scar was the rightful king. Scar’s death was clearly extremely traumatizing, as she has little control over her emotions, scares everyone, and has a quite unhealthy obsession with Scar’s death, Simba’s death, and various dark, violent imagery of a great massacre and dictatorship. I feel sorry for her. Scar wanted Kovu to be king instead of Nuka, so she proceeds with neglecting Nuka and sort of brainwashing Kovu. In the end, her persistent grudge leaves her unable to make peace and dead. Just imagine what damage to her psyche had to have caused that… I doubt she was always like that. Though Disney obviously didn’t know about Zira when making the first movie, for the sake of the story, her absence is usually explained by imagining her coming into Scar’s life during his reign.

Name: Birdie
Name Meaning: none (named by Timali)
Species: “Lesser spotted flap-doodle” bird (species named by Elwyn)
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Small, cute, generic bird. Blue with pink belly.
Close Relations: Unnamed parents and siblings.
Info: Officially adopted by fanartist Timali as her fursona. Not much is revealed of his personality in the movie except a rebellious nature. Timali usually puts her idiosyncrasies into him.

Name: Digger
Name Meaning: none (namer uncertain)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Similar to Vitani. Angry eyes, and large shoulder muscles.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: One of several Outlander lionesses called the “unique outsiders”, discovered by fans and noted for their unique physical appearance. Digger is seen digging (hence the name) irritably when the camera pans over the Outlands for the first time. I imagine she’s a no-nonsense sort of girl.

Name: Vitani
Name Meaning: “Vita” means war, battle, dispute, contest, “shetani”- Vitani’s original name- means demon, devil, evil spirit OR supernatural power. Some have said that this makes her name mean demon of war.
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- Lacey Chabert (cub, speaking) Crysta Macalush (cub, singing) Jennifer Lien (adult, speaking)
Physical Attributes: Beige fur, dark blue eyes, and a large tuft of hair hanging over her forehead. The spots where her whiskers go (though absent) are clearly visible.
Close Relations: Daughter of Scar and Zira, sister of Kovu and Nuka.
Info: Vitani has an attitude, and can be excitable and irritable. Extremely loyal to her mother until her views are revealed to be wrong. Strangely enough, she has no importance to the plot in the movie, but she is extremely popular with the fans.

Name: Nuka
Name Meaning: stink, nauseate
Species: Lion
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- Andy Dick (speaking and singing)
Physical Attributes: Probably the most visually complex character. Due to lack of grooming, baths, clean healthy conditions, and maybe genes, Nuka is supposedly extremely ugly. Scruffy termite-tormented fur, and a underdeveloped mane that’s matted and curly and frizzy beyond much help. Crooked tail, unusually large nose, wrinkles under the eyes, and a set of blunt teeth of equal length. His face is very flexible and often twisted into unflattering expressions, particularly a wide, curvy grin (lacking his parent’s wriggle) that can become a rather wide-toothed evil grin. His body is capable of many wild and frantic poses, suggesting much flexibility- the way he jumps and runs shows him to be built for high, long jumps and sprinting. While severely lacking dignity and subtlety, he is actually unfairly labeled as butt-ugly, and appears to me at least as unconventionally and almost ruggedly handsome.
Close Relations: Son of Scar and Zira, brother of Kovu and Vitani.
Info: Though depicted as silly, undignified, and dirty, Disney seems to be undecided on whether you’re supposed to despise his filthy, ugly, and jealous person, or laugh at his absurd expressions, Tex Avery-esque character animation and physical gags, or feel sorry for his sad, neglected, forgotten position, undeserving of his mockery and unfortunate in his looks, and be sad that he died. One thing he definitely is not- retarded. It is not like he’s stupid and thick-headed for trying act so eager-to-please and persistent in his argument of being the eldest. One thing is for sure is that he really resents Kovu’s untraditional inheritance, and only wants to get some praise from Zira, the latter he sort of gets when he dies an unfair death. Otherwise he seems sad and lonely, moping sometimes, or when he’s in a good mood, goofy with a mischievous sense of humor. Then, of course, he’s absolutely scared to death of Zira, and nervously laughs whenever she’s around.

Name: Mynsu
Name Meaning: An acronym of “macho yenye ng’aa sana”, which means beady eyes, with a “u” added at the end for exoticness. (named by meeee!!!)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- possibly Zoe Leader (speaking)
Physical Attributes: Pale grey-beige fur. Distinctive small beady eyes.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: The only Pridelander lioness with unusual looks discovered so far. She can be heard saying “My, how you’ve grown” to Kiara. She’s often said to be Sarafina, mainly because her voice is apparently the same actress, but this is odd as they look completely different. Her name isn’t quite fixed yet, and I’ve seen her called Saraw and Nuru. Since I couldn’t decide which I liked better, I decided to give her a name that fit her most distinctive characteristic (see bottom).

Name: Dotty
Name Meaning: none (named by Timba TT)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride- uncredited (She screams.)
Physical Attributes: Dark fur. Distinctive row of dots under her right eye. Sometimes a lazy eye can be seen.
Close Relations: Sister of Spotty.
Info: The first discovered and most popular of the Outlander lionesses. There’s another lioness who has a lazy eye, often called Sly-Eye, but Dotty appears several times with a lazy eye as well, so either Sly-Eye is Dotty missing her dots, a completely different lioness, a merging of the two, or the original lioness design that had dots and a lazy eye eventually split into two. I go for the last one.

Name: Spotty
Name Meaning: none (named by Celia)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Like Dotty, except her head is differently shaped and the dots are under her left eye.
Close Relations: Sister of Dotty.
Info: At first appears to just be Dotty flipped over, but Dotty appears in the same shot.

Name: Scratch
Name Meaning: none (named by Mizani)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Square-ish head and huge teeth. Supposedly a small dot is on the bridge of her nose.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Pounces on Simba in one shot. Basically, blink and you’ll miss it. Originally thought to have had a small dot on the bridge of her nose, but inspecting the next and previous frames reveals that it’s only a malformed and/or shadowy wrinkle of anger. But it’s too late now, she’s been named, so might as well keep her and her “dot”.

Name: Kaburi
Name Meaning: grave (named by meeee!!!)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: A storybook version of Simba’s Pride
Voice Actors: none
Physical Attributes: Orange-brown fur. Blue eyes.
Close Relations: n/a
Info: Based loosely on Maiba belonging to TheUnknownSoul, (whose name is a Shona- a language native to Zimbabwe- name meaning grave). When I discovered that Maiba wasn’t the same as the lioness in the illustration, but only shared each other’s design, I decided to create Kaburi, who is that lioness.

Name: Scruffy
Name Meaning: none (named by Keesha)
Species: Lioness
Appearances: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride

Odds and Ends
The Mandrill Sisters- Barbara, Louise and Irlene (female mandrill Country-Western trio, from David Morris’ TLK character encyclopedia)

Saraw/Nuru (“nuru” means brightness, illuminate, light, light up, radiance, emit light, shine, “Saraw” appears to be either a Southeastern Native American tribe, a Malaysian name, a place in Afghanistan, a nickname for women named Sara with a last name starting with “W”, or some program that has to do with literacy or something. Maybe it’s just made up.)*

*A couple of names by others for Mynsu. Keeping it here because I like what I wrote for it.
