It was definitely difficult being a single parent. His mate, and therefore Kiza’s mother, had passed recently; times had been worse since then. No funeral had occurred after her death. No respect at all had been shown to her, and this is what frustrated Balaa. Still, the fact of the matter was that she had gone, and that his son had gone and run off somewhere within the jungle. Balaa walked into Nyumba ya Kikumbuko where Daraka was laying down, resting. As much as Balaa detested him, Daraka was the only one he ever came to so that he could solve his problems…only because he was the only one that knew how. The clan was very uneducated. Since Daraka had raised them, none of them were aware of even the established hierarchy normally found within a hyena clan. Daraka lifted his head once he was aware of Balaa's presence. Balaa tried to let his hatred towards him fade away. He knew that it would make it a lot easier if he at least tried to respect him. Balaa: Morning sir Daraka: Morning Balaa: Sir, have you seen my son…Kiza? Daraka: Your son? (Pause) How old is he? Balaa: He’s very young, sir, he’s only just a cub… Daraka: Just a cub, hey? You know, there are about ten to twenty cubs here and… Balaa: He’s the one with the white… Daraka: …I wouldn’t know where he is…you’ve lost him, correct? Balaa: Yes sir Daraka: (Thinking) Does his mother know where he might be? The kindness faded from Balaa. Balaa: His mother is dead!! She died less than a moon ago, remember? ......... Balaa: You don’t, do you? Haven't you even cared for any of us? Whilst we’ve… Daraka: Okay, okay, I get it…your mate is dead. The truth is, though, I don’t know where your son, Kazi… Balaa: Kiza Daraka: …Kiza is, so I’m afraid I can’t be of any help. (Balaa glares at him) What? I don't know where he is...what do you expect me to do? Balaa: Search party, maybe? Daraka: Oh, sure, sure, go ahead, send a search party out. Just a hint for next time, Sarafina and I always made a little meeting place for whenever we lost each other...makes a lot of help Balaa: Oh, and you would know what help is? Daraka: (Annoyed) Well what do you expect me to do? Balaa: Nothing, nothing, you go back to sleep into your little dream world with your Saffy and Nala you talk to us about all the time and I'll see you later. Balaa turned and left angrily leaving Daraka in Nyumba ya Kikumbuko slightly confused. He rested his head back on the ground as Balaa walked out. Suddenly, Balaa heard a voice calling his name from nearby him, but he couldn't reply. Kiza: (Nudging him with his paw) Dad - wake up Balaa: Huh? (Opening his eyes) Oh, morning Kiza. Just - had a bad dream. You know, those things happen sometimes Kiza: Was it Daraka again? Balaa: Yes, son, it was Daraka Kiza: He should never have put us through that. Didn’t he say he was meant to have been king? Balaa: Yes, he did Kiza: Do you think he is now? Balaa: I don’t know…(he gets up)…but you’re right; he shouldn’t have ever put us through that. I'll bet you one thing though - right now, he’s probably with his mate, his child, his whole family, and then he just left and abandoned us here! What did we ever do wrong, hey? We followed his orders, we had all the opportunities to kill him…but we never did because we wanted war! And we never got it, did we? Where as he goes and lives in luxury his whole life and just leaves us here…he never deserved anything Kiza: I agree with you, father. (He gets up and stands next to him) I think that he’s forgotten about us. And you know what else I think? Balaa: No…what? Kiza: I think that we should get our reward. You say that you know the way to the Pridelands? Balaa: Yes, I do Kiza: We should attack; we have nothing holding us back, do we? I mean, who here does not hate Daraka? We don’t need to form any alliances, we’re strong enough…we should just go out there and attack! Balaa: (Smiling at him) You know, I can’t believe that I’ve never thought of that. Well, I guess that is a bit of a lie, I’ve just never had the courage to go out there and do it. But with what you just said son…ha, ha, ha, Daraka will never know what hit him… Part 1: The First Rainbow The magnificent sight of an African sunrise - once again went unnoticed by most of the Pridelanders. In fact, almost none of them had got up yet. An exception, as always, was the cubs, of which there were four now within the lands: Kopa, the cub that Nala had rescued; Kimya, a dark cub whom was the son of Kiara; and Ania and Itikio, Amani's twin daughters. Amani, along with Hunter and Huduma, had easily settled into their new home. The lands, the water, along with the amount and variety of food were a lot greater than where either of them had come from. They were able to sleep a lot easier now. Unless of course... Itikio: Hey, Mommy, Mommy...wake up! Come on, Mommy, wake up please! Amani: (Opens her eyes slightly) Oh, morning Iti. What you want, deary? Itikio: Mom, there's this thing outside, and we don't know what it is...so...can you tell us? Amani: Hmm, what thing? Itikio: We don't know, that's why we want you to come out. Come on, Mom! (She starts to run off) Amani: Itikio - WAIT! (Itikio stops) It could be dangerous, let me go out first. Amani got up and hurried to the cave entrance, then walked out into the sun's blinding rays. She relaxed a little when she realized what her daughter had seen. Itikio: Do you know what it is, Mommy? Amani: Why, Iti, that's a rainbow! Itikio: A rainbow? Amani: Yes, I guess you've never seen one before, have you? Since we have gone a little while without rain - until last night Itikio: So, you only see a rainbow once it rains? Amani: That's right, Iti! My, you are one smart little lioness, aren't you? Itikio: You really think so? (Amani nods) So, what does a rainbow actually do? Amani: Well...nothing really. It's just there for you to admire it's beauty, and put you in a peaceful state of mind Itikio: That's it? Amani: Yes, Iti, that's all it does Itikio: Nothing that...you know...I just thought that if something was so pretty like that, then maybe it would actually do something Amani: Well...there's a rumor that says that at the end of a rainbow there's treasure...(Itikio gasps)...but that one looks far away, don't you think? Itikio: No, it's near enough Mom. Can we go...please, please, please? Amani: (Smiles at her) Sorry darling but... Kimya: (Walking out of Pride Rock) Hi Iti, how are you? Itikio: (Excited) Kimya, Kimya, you'll never believe this...see that rainbow over there? There's treasure at the end of it, and Mom's going to take us to see it!! Amani: Now, Itikio, I never said... Kiara: (Coming out as well) Really Amani? That's a very kind thing for you to do. You know, I wouldn't mind having a bit of an adventure either Amani: But... Itikio: Come on, Kimya, we need to tell Ania and Kopa that we're going! Amani: Wait!! Itikio and Kimya, who had already started to run off, stopped and turned to look at her. Amani sighed. They were both so full of hope and energy; she just couldn't upset them... Amani: Okay...let's go. Itikio and Kimya cheered and continued to run down the path. Amani and Kiara laughed softly and followed them from behind. When the two elder lionesses got down there, their two cubs had already told the others the news. Ania, the most energetic of any of them, was bouncing up and down excited, ready to go. Kopa, however, sulkily rested on a rock. Amani: What's wrong, Kopa, don't you want to come? Ania: No, he doesn't, Mom. Come on, we can go without him. Lets go, lets go, lets go! Amani: Wait Ania Kiara: (Walking up to him) Aw, come on bro, what's wrong? Kopa: Nothing...I just...don't wanna go Kiara: Why not? Kopa: (Shrugs) Don't feel like it. Mom probably won't even let me Kiara: Have you asked her? Kopa: Well...no...but... Kiara: How do you know she won't let you then? Come on, Kopa. Before he could respond, Kiara started to leave him with the others. Kopa hesitated, but he quickly realized that it would be more fun if he went. Within the next few seconds, he had got off the rock and caught up with the other five. Part 2: Messages to Simba Ania led the pack across the Pridelands, pouncing on everything she saw move. Kimya was doing his best to try and keep up with her - in vain. Kopa walked next to Kiara. He had never really been the one to go running off playing. Itikio walked halfway between him and her mom. Kopa was her friend, but her mom was the one whom she loved. They had decided to take a stop at the waterhole before they continued. Fortunately for them, Simba and Nala were already there. This ended the search for them; they could get the "needed" permission to take Kopa now. Kiara: Mom, Dad! Simba: (Turns around and smiles) Hi Kiara, how is everything? Kiara: Fine Dad, everything's fine Simba: (Kneeling down to Kimya's height) And how's my grandson? Kimya: I'm fine grandpa. Aunt Ami is taking us on an adventure! Simba: Oh really? (Stands back up straight and faces Amani) And where would Aunt Ami be taking them? Amani: Down to that rainbow over there Simba: (Turns to face it) Hmm, bit far, don't you think? Amani: Well...(looking down at Itikio)...if it was up to me, we wouldn't be going, would we Iti? Itikio: (Giggling) No Mommy, but can we? Amani: (Beams down at her) Yeah, why not? (Back to Simba) We just wanted to make sure that Kopa could come Simba: Yeah, you can take him. Nala, are you okay if Kopa goes? Nala: (Coming up to them) Well...um...gee, I don't know, Simba. I mean, I trust Kiara but...going out of the lands? Itikio: Can he, please? Nala: Well...you know what; I think I'll come too. If that's okay with you Simba? Simba: Of course, Nala, that's fine. (To Kiara) When do you think you'll be home? Kiara: Oh, before sundown. (Quietly) The rainbow should've gone by then Kopa: So, dad, aren't you going to come? Nala: Your father would love to come Kopa, but he can't. Being king, he always has some work to do Simba: Hmm, no kidding, before long I always find out I've even more to do than I had before... Two minutes later... Simba: You're kidding, right? You're just fooling around with me? Rafiki: Actually, for once I'm not Simba: (Sighs) Okay, okay, let me get this straight. The hyenas in the jungle, that were under Daraka's rule - want him dead Rafiki: Yes Simba: And...we can't tell them that he's dead, because they probably won't believe us Rafiki: You're getting good at this Simba: And now you tell me that there is probably going to be a war between their clan and our pride? Rafiki: I never said probably, I said almost certainly Simba: (Sighs again) When? Rafiki: Huh? Simba: The war...how far into the future is it going to happen? Rafiki: I do not know that Simba: (Tense) You mean it could happen tomorrow? Rafiki: Today even ......... Simba: I'd better get the others back. Part 3: Who to Tell? This time, all four of the cubs were ahead of the lionesses. They continued to jump around excited, discussing with each other what they thought the "treasure" would be. Timon and Pumbaa heard them coming from far off. They had been searching every rock, enjoying the taste of the delicious bugs in the rich Pridelands. Once they heard the commotion, however, they stopped searching and went over to the group to see what was going on. Ania: (Seeing them approaching) Timon! Pumbaa! Come with us, we're going to find treasure! Timon: You're gonna what? Itikio: We're going to find treasure...at the end of that rainbow Timon: Really? What kind of treasure? Ania: I dunno...just treasure, I guess. You know, something great...like...whatever you love the most Pumbaa: Er...like bugs? Itikio: Yeah...but more bugs that you could ever imagine! Timon: (Slowly) More...more bugs than you...more bugs than you could ever imagine...did you hear that Pumbaa? Pumbaa: Yeah...(to the cubs) Who's taking you? Ania: Mom Timon: (Walking over to Amani) Hi Amani Amani: Hi Timon. How's it going? Timon: Oh, great...hey, your twins just told us about this wonderful place you were going to...with the greatest treasure you could ever imagine...so...what I guess I'm trying to say is... Pumbaa: (Interjecting) Can we go there? Timon: (Acting hysterical) Please...take us! Take us out of these stinking wastelands! (Turns to Simba) Sorry Simba...(back to Amani)...get us out of these horrible, pathetic, lands, please! (Turns back to Simba) I don't mean any of this, okay? But...hey, where did you come from? Nala: Simba? Aren't you supposed to be guarding our lands? Simba: Well, I was...but that's not really important right now. Timon, Pumbaa, can you two please take the cubs aside whilst I talk to the others about something Timon: Sure...um...okay. (He walks over with the cubs and Pumbaa) Simba: Um...Amani...you might want to go with them too Amani: Why? It must be quite important...you've brought everyone else along...even Huduma - and Zazu Zazu: When he asks you to leave, madam, that means that you leave. No questions asked Amani: (Sighs) Okay Hunter: (Whispering to her as she walks by) I'll tell you once we're done, okay? Amani: Yes, that will be fine, Hunter. Amani arrived with the other six, standing a good enough distance away not to be heard. Ania: Mommy! You came to see us! Amani: Yes I did, Ania Ania: Are we still going to see the rainbow? Amani: Hmm...maybe Itikio: Hey, Mom...what do you think will be at the end of it? Amani: Well...you know - I'm not sure actually... Itikio: Here's an easier way to think about it. What do you love more than anything else on this world? Amani: (Smiles) Why, Itikio. I love my two daughters more than anything else. (She hugs them and Ania tries to push herself out of her grasp) Ania: Mom, let me go! Oh...why can't we be over there with all the others? Amani: They're probably talking about something you wouldn't understand Ania: No one ever tells us anything Amani: Oh, that's not true. Life gets a lot more difficult when you get older you know Ania: What does that have to do with you not telling us stuff? Amani: (Trying to avoid the topic) Don't I tell you two stories every night? Ania: Yeah, but they're never real Itikio: Yes they are! Ania: Itikio, think about it for a second. Mom's stories always have a happy ending - not everything that happens in real life ends up with an ending like that. They can't be real! I mean, who does she think we are - some kind of cartoon character? Amani: Ania, Ania, listen to me okay. Not everything that has happened in my life has been good... Ania: Well then why can't you tell us a story with a sad ending for once? Itikio: No, Ania! I like the ones Mom tells Ania: Well I'm getting tired of them... Amani: Ania, Itikio, please stop arguing. (Looks up) Now where have the others gone? Itikio: They went back over there. Dad and the rest stopped talking. They decided to walk back up to them. Amani could tell from the way everyone was moving that it wasn't good news. Amani: Hunter, dear...is everything okay? (Hunter doesn't respond) Ania: Daddy, can we still go and see the rainbow? Hunter: (Faces down at her) No, sorry Ania, you can't Ania: Why not? Hunter: Cause...(looks up)...it's gone Ania: (Looks behind her) Oh...yeah... Hunter: Listen, kids, I don't want any of you to leave the Pridelands until we're told it's safe to do so Ania: (Whining) Oh...we're missing out on all the fun Hunter: No you're not. As a matter of fact, that goes for me, your mother, and everyone else in this pride. None of us are aloud to leave these lands Itikio: Why? Hunter: (Sighs) I can't tell you Ania: Bet you can tell Mom though, can't you? Hunter: (Faces Amani whom looks concerned, then back at cubs) Listen to me, okay - you're not supposed to ever leave the lands in the first place, so it should make no difference. Now...go off and play with the others Ania: But...dad... Amani: Do as your father says, children. Sulkily, Ania and Itikio walked off away from them to Kopa and Kimya. Amani: Hunter, please tell me what's going on. I know I'm not the best with these kinds of things, but please, I must know Hunter: (Thinks for a second then...) Okay, I'll tell you. Amani, you remember those hyenas that served Daraka in the jungle? Amani: I heard about them once, yes Hunter: Well, they think that Daraka is still alive...and they never really like him that much, to be honest Amani: So? Hunter: (Sighs) There's gonna be a war, Amani...(she gasps)...and we're meant to prepare for it Amani: Including me? Hunter: Yes, including...well...I guess someone has to stay and guard the cubs...but listen Amani; you are a really good fighter if you could just... Amani: Yeah right Hunter: No, I mean it. Remember that time you...I mean...sorry... Amani: HUNTER!! I thought we agreed to never bring that up again! Hunter: (Apologetically) You're right...you're right...I'm sorry Amani. Look, you can guard the cubs when they come okay. But even if you do that, you may have to just strengthen yourself up just a little bit, just incase Amani: (Bows her head) I guess...I guess that I should, shouldn't I? I mean, you used to love war, but now...you've changed for me. I guess I should do something to help you as well Hunter: Now, Amani...I love you just the way you are...(he licks her and she cheers up a bit)...you don't have to Amani: But it would help, wouldn't it? Hunter: Well, yes, I guess it would. Ha! Them hyenas have probably forgot the way here anyways Amani: Hmm. (She looks at him seriously) I know that there'll be a war, Hunter. I know that Rafiki must have been told by the gods, and that's how everyone knows in advance. Hey, go be yourself. You'll need to practice. She walked off. Hunter felt guilty for not telling her now. She was convinced that he had changed for her, that he hated the idea of this war. Well, he hadn't changed as much as she thought he had. Being honest with himself, he wanted a bit of action. Part 4: Involuntary Service Night covered the jungle. The silence was broken only by the sound of chirping crickets. Balaa and Kiza rested inside Nyumba ya Kikumbuko. Unfortunately for them, they had underestimated the willingness of the hyenas to fight. Daraka promised war and never led them into one...why should they trust these two? However, the pack knew Balaa and Kiza a lot better than Daraka, so some of them were willing to go. Balaa started to make noises in his sleep again that woke Kiza up. When they started to get on his nerves, he yanked on his father's tail and he woke too. Balaa: Oh man, don't tell me I was...(Kiza nods)...that Daraka. Sooner we get to kill him the better! Kiza: I couldn't agree more Voice: What have you got against Daraka anyways? Balaa and Kiza looked around startled, trying to find out whom would ask such a ridiculous question in the first place. Balaa: What do I have against Daraka? Are you insane!?! He dictated our lives! What we knew and what we didn't know was chose by him. He promised a reward for our work and we never got it! Voice: He gave enough food for you to survive though, didn't he? Balaa: I could have caught my food myself! Then I would still have had my mate! Voice: Didn't he say that this whole thing was started by just a few helpless hyena cubs that needed somebody to help them? Balaa: Oh, he wasn't really helpful though, was he? Kiza: Do you want me to go and find out who is asking these questions? Balaa: Yeah, go ahead, go ahead. So...whoever the heck you are...why did you like Daraka? Voice: Daraka was a nice lion who just happened to have a couple of issues with the love of his life. If your mate hadn't have died, would you still be planning to go to war with him? Balaa: Probably, yes Voice: Really? Well, what if I were to tell you something? Balaa: Like what? Voice: Like...Daraka is already dead Kiza: Aha! You're up this tree, here...yeah I heard you! Balaa: How would you know if Daraka is already dead? Voice: Because...wah! Kiza: Hah! Gotcha! Balaa: Who is it, son? Kiza: It's...why, hello! It's Huduma! (He places his paws over his wings to stop him from escaping) Balaa: Huduma! (Comes walking over to them) What are you doing here? Huduma: (Trying to remain calm) I simply came her to tell you that Daraka was already dead Kiza: (Facing Balaa, ignoring Huduma) Oh, this will help us a lot. Getting rid of Daraka's... Huduma: I just told you...Daraka's dead Balaa: How do we know you're not lying? Huduma: Why would I want to do that? Kiza: Because if we believed that he was dead, we wouldn't want to attack him and his pride Balaa: Why else would you come here, Huduma? (Huduma remains silent) Kiza: Tell us now or we'll kill you! Balaa: Why did you come here Huduma? ANSWER ME!! Huduma: I just came here to tell you that Daraka's dead and there's no need to go to war Kiza: (Pause) How did you know that we wanted to go to war with you? Huduma: I have my resources Kiza: You have your resources, huh? Well, what I gather Huduma is the only reason you could possibly have known before now that we were going to go to war with you was that you were spying on us. And there's only one war to stop a spy...so, dad, shall we just kill him and go? Balaa: (Longer pause) No. It seems as if he doesn't actually care if we kill him, does he? Kiza: Would you like us to kill you Huduma? Huduma: I just wanted you to know that Daraka's dead Kiza: (Yet another pause) Yeah, we should just kill him Balaa: No...don't! We shouldn't, what use would he be if we did? He can be our little prisoner, our asset. Now, listen here, Huduma, you could do it last time... Huduma: ...with Daraka... Balaa: ...and you can do it this time without him. Gather all the hyenas together. Our plans are to head east, and then circle around to the back of the Pridelands for a surprise attack...got it? (Huduma remains silent) I take that as a yes. Kiza, keep a good eye on him, don't want him running off Kiza: And to prevent flying...(Kiza digs his claws and gashes his claws through Huduma's wings)...now...(letting his paws off)...lets go! Part 5: The Reasons Why Timon was sitting down on a rock, staring out into the distance of the savannah lands. He had gone for a quick break to go and get some grub. He had told Ania and Pumbaa that he would be back in a minute, and for them to stay where they were - but they hadn't! Instead, they had run off and started to play with each other without him, but now he wasn't sure where they had gone - though he had a rough idea. Suddenly, he heard two voices arguing from behind him. Amani: (Irritated) Why did you tell him? Hunter: Listen, Amani, I know I shouldn't have but listen...it was one mistake, he... Amani: One? One! Listen, Hunter, when I think back of all the times you've lied to me - or - or times you've isolated me from the truth. And now you tell me that you told Simba? Timon: Er...sorry to interrupt you two - but...um... Hunter: (Noticing him for the first time) Why, hello there Timon! How's it going? Amani: Hunter, if you're not going to talk to me... Timon: Er...do you want me to go away? Hunter: No, no, you're fine... Amani: (Warning) Hunter... Timon: Er...sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I have some news that you might be interested in Amani: (Walking in front of Hunter; acting kind) Listen Timon, can you just let it wait a little while, Hunter and I are having a little talk Hunter: No, Amani, let him talk, it might be important Timon: Yeah, um...I think I saw Ania leave the lands earlier Hunter: WHAT!?! Amani: Timon...are you sure? Timon: Well, I dunno. You see, Pumbaa and Ania were playing over there, and it seemed like Huduma went down there to join them, and then I saw Huduma fly out of the lands. I just think that maybe Ania may have gone too. Quickly, Hunter ran down with a now concerned Amani behind him to where Timon had signaled that "over there" was. Timon decided to follow them on down. When they got there, they found Ania and Pumbaa happily playing with each other still, and also Simba at the scene. Hunter: (Spotting her) Ania! There you are! (He runs up to her) Gee, we thought you'd gone off with Huduma! Simba: Hang on, Hunter, what is this you say about Huduma? Hunter: Something about Huduma leaving the lands Pumbaa: Oh, yeah...he said something about that to me Simba: Can you remember what he said? Pumbaa: Er...something about stacks of ice Simba: (Puzzled) Stacks of ice? Pumbaa: Or was it was sacks of mice? Simba: Listen, Pumbaa, you're not making any sense... Pumbaa: No, I remember now...sacrifice! Whatever that is Simba: WHAT!?! Timon: (To Pumbaa) And you let him run off and sacrifice himself? Why would you want to do that? Hunter: Um...Amani...shall we take Ania back? (Amani stands paralyzed in shock) Amani? Simba: Yeah, Timon, Pumbaa, get her away from here Pumbaa: Of course we will, sir! (Walking away with them) Timon, Ania and I came up with this really great game! Timon: (Voice fading off) Oh yeah...Ania and you did...sure Simba: Whoa, Pumbaa! Actually, I want you to stay here for now. (Ania walks off with Timon) Now tell me, what did Huduma tell you about sacrificing himself? Pumbaa: Well...he went into this long talk...and I've forgot most of it. Something about that the war may have been preventable if he lost his life to tell the hyenas that Daraka was dead and they had no reason to attack Simba: No...no, he couldn't have...Rafiki already told me that that won't work Hunter: Maybe you could ask him for a second opinion? Simba: There's no point Hunter. Hyenas are not that trustworthy, they won't believe that Daraka is dead just by Huduma's word...they'd need proof Hunter: But there's no way that we can give it to them! Simba: Exactly. Hunter, there will be a war. Come on, we need to be prepared. Part 6: Similarities Balaa and Kiza were enjoying the sight of a weak Huduma. He had always been Daraka's alliance, and therefore their enemy. Huduma literally just wanted to die for the relief of pain from the pointless work that they were assigning him. But first he knew that he had to convince them that Daraka was dead. There was now no way of getting out of their grasp without getting killed, and as much as he may have wanted that, he couldn't have it just yet until he had convinced them. Huduma: (Exhausted; walking into Nyumba ya Kikumbuko) Okay, Balaa, all the boulders in the entire jungle have been removed from the main paths Balaa: Good Huduma: May I ask you something, sir? Balaa: Er...sure...go ahead Huduma: Thank you. Have you realized that all the hyenas within the clan will be getting tired of this soon? Balaa: No. Why, what do you think I should do? Huduma: I think that soon you're going to be exactly the same kind of leader as Daraka was Kiza: Yeah, but to you that's a good thing Huduma: Can you please listen to me? Balaa: Can you please stop questioning my rule? Huduma: Listen, all I'm saying is that if you stop the rest from doing what they want to do, then they won't want to stay around a whole lot longer. You see now how hard it was for Daraka? Kiza: You know, Huduma, Balaa doesn't have any time for you right now...get out of here! Balaa: No, Kiza...maybe he's right... Huduma: (To Kiza) See? Balaa: ...in which case there's only one thing to do. Attack now! Huduma: NO! Balaa: (Ferociously) And why not? Huduma: Be...because there's no need to! Daraka's dead! Haven't I told you enough times? Kiza: Oh, whatever! Balaa: You're convinced, aren't you? Okay, go ahead, show me Daraka's body Huduma: I can't do that Balaa: And why not? Huduma: We respect the dead, sire. To find his carcass and move it would be barbaric! Why, ever since his funeral we... Balaa: Funeral? (Pause) So...(angrily)...Daraka had a funeral, did he? Huduma: Well, sire, you must understand... Balaa: (Livid) I understand perfectly well! Now, get out of here! Go and play football or something with the others, that'll cheer them up Huduma: (Sighs) Yes, sire. (Walks out) Kiza: (Confused) Football? Balaa: Remember, he's the ball Kiza: Ah, of course. You're not going to listen to him, are you? Balaa: About what? Kiza: About Daraka being dead, about you being the same ruler that he was? Balaa: Quite frankly...I don't care. If Huduma is telling the truth of Daraka's death and his family's respect for him - well, that's what he never deserved, so they deserve to die. And as for me being that kind of a ruler...well...here's the way I see it...it doesn't matter how long it takes, if I lead us into the war that we have long been awaiting, then we will all get what we deserve. No, for now we'll just stay here until we are totally prepared, then we will go and fight. Part 7: The Leaving Party Rains came over the lands that night. They washed away the old life, and brought with them new. The downpour continued into the morning. Usually, by the time that the rest had woken up, Ania had already been outside and played a little, but for now that was not the case. She had hated the last few days. Timon and Pumbaa's continuous arguments (as always, about the slightest things) had been making it hard for her to find someone in a good mood to play with. Her parents had been acting different as well. Hunter and Amani had been arguing and avoiding each other for way too long in Ania's opinion. It seemed as if their family was falling to pieces, and as much as Simba and Nala had been trying to help, Ania just wanted to get away from it all. But no, she couldn't now...it was raining. As all rains do eventually, however, they soon ended. Ania bounded outside into the suns glaring rays, enjoying herself with the great feel of the sunlight on her. The lands outside were a lot more colorful than the inside of Pride Rock. The sun's rays from the sky brought out the brightness in the lands as far as the eye could see, and the rainbow was there to help. Ania wasn't going to let anything get in the way of her today; she simply just wasn't going to give anyone the opportunity to stop her. She ran down from Pride Rock onto the moist floor that covered the ground, then gave one quick glance behind her, and, once she'd seen that the coast was clear, began to run...oof! Kiara: Oh, hi Ania Ania: (Having just ran into her) Hi Kiara Kiara: You didn't hurt yourself, did you? Ania: No, no, I'm fine. (She gets up walks on by her) Kimya: Hi Ania Ania: Hi Kimya Kimya: Where you going? Ania: (Quietly) Where's it look like? Kimya: (Seeing the rainbow) Oh... Ania: Coming? Kimya: Sorry Ania, (turning to Kiara) Mommy said we can't go, didn't you Mommy? Kiara: Hmm...I'm sorry Ania. It's just too dangerous to walk outside the lands now Ania: Oh...(glaring at Kimya)...well in that case, can Kimya come and play with me? Kiara: Yeah, sure. Go on Kimya, go play with Ania. I'll be over by the waterhole if you need me, okay? If not, well, someone down there will know where I am Kimya: Fine Mom Kiara: Love you sweetheart. (She walks off) Ania: You just had to say that, didn't you? Kimya: Mommy said that it was too dangerous! Ania: You idiot! There's nothing dangerous about a rainbow! Now, come on! Kimya: But Ania... Ania: (Impatiently) Are you coming or not? Kimya: (Frowning) No, actually Ania, I don't want to come Ania: Fine. I'll go myself Itikio: (Coming up to them) Where you going? Ania: Nowhere Itikio: But you just said... Ania: (Cross) Look , you two, either stop arguing, or come with me! Itikio: I'm not arguing! Ania: Oh really? Itikio: No, I'm not! I don't even know where you're going Kimya: To the rainbow Itikio: Er...Ania...Mom said we couldn't... Ania: I don't CARE...what Mom said...I'm - going - to - the - rainbow...okay? Itikio: But Mom said we can't go! Ania: Mom said you can't go...you can go and play with your friend, Kopa. I, on the other hand, don't really care about that stupid idiot, and therefore, I'm going Kopa: (From behind her) Ania...I'm right here Ania: (Faking surprise) Oh, really? I didn't know, Kopa! I guess that means I should call you, a stupid...cowardly - idiot! Itikio: Ania, don't talk to him like that! Kopa: Yeah, I'm not a coward! Ania: Really? Kopa: Yeah Ania: Then why won't you come with me, hmm? Kopa: Cause my parents told me not to Ania: And why did they tell you not to? Because it was dangerous? Hah! You really are a coward, Kopa! Kopa: Am not! Ania: Oh yeah, prove it then...(turning to face the rainbow)...come with me Kopa: (Pause) Fine Itikio: No, Kopa! Ania: Oh, what's wrong, sister? You scared too? Itikio: No...but Ania...if Mom says we can't do something...we can't do it! Ania: Oh, fine, fine, you stay here...coming Kimya? Kimya: No! Ania: Okay, come on Kopa. (Starts to walk off) Kopa: (Turns around to look at Itikio) Sorry Iti. (Turns back and starts to follow Ania) Itikio: No, Kopa, wait! Kopa: What? Itikio: I like you...I don't want to lose my best friend! Kopa: Well...I like you too Iti...but it's just your sister is so annoying! She's bugging me so much...I have to prove myself to get her off of my back! Itikio: Well...then I'm going with you Kopa: (Pause) You sure? Itikio: Sure. We're in this together, okay pal? Kopa: Yeah...hey Ania, wait up! Itikio's coming too. And so they all three left together, leaving Kimya on his own in the lands. Kimya himself couldn't believe it...they had all three just gone and disobeyed their parents orders...and left him there. Should he tell, or shouldn't he? He knew that if he did, he may never have friends again, but if he did...well...if he did... Part 8: All Set Up Ania led the way with the other two following behind her, trying to keep up with her. They had been walking for so long and they had been tired since they couldn't remember. The sun had already gone down, but Ania was determined to reach this place. Anywhere was better than where she had come from. The rainbow had gone now, they were just heading in the direction that they knew it had been before. Itikio: Ania? ......... Itikio: ANIA!! (Still not replying) I know you can hear me so I'm going to say it anyways. Do you have any idea of where we are? Ania: Somewhere between home and the Pridelands Itikio: Oh, very funny Ania, now seriously, haven't you noticed that there are no trees around here? Ania: Sure I have, think I'm blind? Itikio: No...but, haven't you noticed that there's no grass? Ania: Who needs grass? We're carnivores Iti Itikio: Hey, shut your mouth! Kopa: Er...Iti...we are, you know Itikio: Yes, but she's not aloud to curse Kopa: Carnivore isn't a curse word Itikio: Really? Hmm, Mom always acted like it was Ania: Hey, Iti! Itikio: Yes Ania: Found your trees. Kopa and Itikio looked out in front of them. Sure enough, there they were, many trees crowded up in front of them. They had just, literally, crossed the desert that led to the jungle in less than half a day, (testimony to how fast Ania wanted to get there). Ania: See, we were between home - and the Pridelands Itikio: You think this is where the rainbow led us to? Ania: Probably. Only one way to find out. Ania started to walk on towards it, Itikio and Kopa followed her slowly. Ania: And you two were scared! (Turns and faces them) And look at you, still! You are cowards, walking like tortoises! What's the matter, you scared of trees? Suddenly, a deep groaning noise was heard from behind her. She jumped and turned back to face the jungle. The other two also cowered back a bit. Whatever was making the noises, finally came out from the trees and appeared into their line of sight: it was... Ania: Huduma! Huduma: (Scared) Ah! I'll do whatever you say, just don't hurt...hurt...wait a minute. (Walking closer to them) You're not a hyena Ania: A hyena? Pbbt, Huduma it's me, Ania! Huduma: Ania...Ania! Ania, what are you doing here? Ania: Chasing the rainbow, what else? And look where it's led us too! We've never seen anything like this! Huduma: We've? (Looking behind her) Oh, the others are with you as well Ania: Yeah, Itikio and Kopa decided to come too Huduma: And the rest? Ania: What rest? (Turns around and gasps) Oh...hi Dad Hunter: (Angrily) What do you think you are doing here? Ania: Um...we were... Pumbaa: (Running up to her with Timon) Hi Ania, you've found our old home! Ania: Your old home? Hunter: Er...Ania Ania: Oh, right, look Dad, I'm sorry. But there's nothing wrong here, see? Hunter: Yes there is. Not only did you disobey our orders, you also, as a result, made the whole pride worried sick about you and the other two Ania: Okay, I'm sorry Dad...(to Pumbaa) so you used to live here? Timon: Why, of course we did! Hunter: ANIA!! Ania: Look, Dad, I said I was sorry! And we're all fine! Huduma: Um...sorry to interrupt but...you're not Simba: (Walking up to Huduma) Huduma, you're alive? Huduma: Barely. Listen Simba, take the rest of the pride and get out of here! Simba: Why? Huduma: Because... Balaa: (Coming out from the trees) Huduma! You trying to run out on us? (Realizes and stops dead in his tracks) Kiza: (Coming from behind him) Again? Why, we should have just...(stops and gasps) my...he looks almost exactly like Daraka! Balaa: Yes... Pumbaa: (In a faint whisper to Hunter) I think he's talking about you Hunter: Hmm. (To the hyenas) Er...are you two the only ones here? As he finished saying that, the rest of the clan appeared from the trees behind them, giving an evil grin to the lions. Hunter: Well...that about answers all my questions Balaa: ATTACK!! Part 9: The War The hyena clan charged towards them. Once the four cubs (Kimya had came too with Kiara whom had came to help out just incase there was trouble) were picked up by the scruff of their necks by their parents, and Timon had jumped onto Pumbaa's back, they were immediately scattered running towards the jungle for their lives. Vitani, Simba, and the rest of the lions without any of the cubs started to fight straight away, attacking all of the hyenas that came towards them. Balaa and Kiza followed the lionesses and Hunter, whom carried the cubs - Timon and Pumbaa also with them. The hyenas were still not entirely convinced that Hunter wasn't Daraka. Suddenly, they reached a dead end. Timon, Pumbaa, Nala, Kiara, Amani, and Hunter turned around to see Kiza and Balaa approaching on them. The four lions dropped their cubs to the ground behind them, doing their best to protect them. Kiara: (Quietly) What do we do now? Timon: You know, Pumbaa and I were placed in a very similar situation once, at Pride Rock Hunter: Oh, really? What did you...wait a minute...you mean here, don't you? Timon: No, you see we needed to... Hunter: Hey, just be quiet, okay? Remember when I first met you guys? Nala: Wait, I remember! You had us cornered, just like this Hunter: Exactly Nala: So you can tell what they're going to do? Hunter: Well, it might not work exactly the same since there are two of them but... Balaa: Hey, Daraka! Hunter: (Turning to them) You're not talking to me are you? I'm not Daraka, he was my brother Kiza: Whatever Hunter: Doesn't my voice sound different to his? Balaa: I forget...so I'm not taking any chances Hunter: (Back to the lionesses; quietly) Right, Nala, you go left and Kiara, if you go... Nala: Wait...wait...what about the cubs? ......... Hunter: OH SH... Amani: Hunter! Hunter: ...oot. I almost forgot! Right, here's a second plan...(inaudible whispers)...got it? Kiara: Right Nala: Okay Pumbaa: That's good with me...and Timon Balaa: (Both of them are still closing in on them) Hey, lion... Hunter: You talking to me? Balaa: Yeah, so, um - let's say that you are Daraka's brother...why you even trying to live anyways? I mean, how do you live knowing the truth? Hunter: What truth? Balaa: What truth? What truth? The fact that Daraka was the worst lion to ever set foot on this planet! Nala: (Enraged) That is not true! Balaa: Oh, and what makes you think that? Nala: My dad was... Kiza: (They both stop) Your dad!?! Nala: Yes, my dad! ......... Kiza: Right...let's kill her first Balaa: No, son...I think she needs to know first. Listen hear now, Nala... Nala: How do you know my name? Balaa: Daraka ensured that we would never forget it. Now, listen up, Daraka was the worst lion that has ever set foot on this planet... Nala: (Slowly starting to approach them, all muscles ready to strike them down) You'd better take them words back Balaa: Oh, really? And what do you plan to do if I don’t? Nala: (Livid; turning to the lions) Right, here's what's going to happen. We aren't going to get out of here without a fight, so, come on you three, just use what you know and we can beat these guys. Nala turned back; Hunter and Kiara followed her. Amani: Go on Pumbaa. (Nudges him forward) Pumbaa: Huh? I think she was talking about you, Amani Amani: Don't be ridiculous, one of us has to stay and guard the cubs Nala: (Turning back) I did mean you Amani, now come on! Amani: Um...the...cubs... Nala: Timon and Pumbaa will keep an eye on them - now stop wasting time, Amani, come on!! Amani: But... Nala: AMANI!! You can't tell me that your parents never at least tried to teach you about killing or... Amani: (Sharply) 'My parents' and 'killing' don't go together! A roar echoed out behind them, they had forgotten how much time they had wasted. Kiza and Balaa were wrestling around with Hunter and Kiara. Hunter's determination and wrestling abilities were definitely coming out, as he started to get the advantage on Kiza and then knocked him to the ground. Kiza didn't have anywhere near enough time before Hunter was back on top of him, ready to deal the final, fatal, strike...and then gave it. Kiara on the other hand, was having a lot worse luck. Hunter and Nala started to run in to help her, as Balaa managed to also throw her to the ground. But then out of the darkness, came some more of the hyena clan, certainly outnumbering that of the lions. The lions responded, as, announcing his presence with an ear-splitting roar, Simba, Vitani, and the rest of the pride, arrived and quickly became a part of the action. Simba immediately made his way over to Balaa and started to force him away from Kiara. Then the fighting really started to pick up. Amani couldn't take it anymore. Quickly, she turned and called for the cubs to get on her back. But before she could reach them, she felt a hyena land on her back, grab hold of her, and then pull her to the ground; knocking her out... Part 10: At the End The war had been finished for a while now. The pride stood solemnly together waiting for Simba to return with the news. Eventually, they saw him slowly approaching him. Simba: Hunter said we can go ahead, he'll catch up Nala: Is Amani okay? Simba: I don't think so, sorry everyone Huduma: No, it's me who should be sorry. If I had never come here none of this would have ever happened! Simba: Don't lay it all at your feet Huduma. There were plenty of them who were willing to fight without a leader ......... Ania: Where's Mom - and Dad - and Itikio? Nala: Ania...(Ania turns to face her)...listen...you're dad will be here in a minute... Ania: And Mom? Nala: Well…Ania...yes...yes…she will be. You see, Ania, even if you're a thousand miles away from her, or your sister for that matter, they'll always be with you...(she places her paw on her heart)...here...(Ania smiles a little) Simba: Well...come on everyone...lets go home. It seemed an eternity until they got there, but what had been a long night was finally coming to the end as they could finally see the sun beginning to rise, and with it, some green savannah lands. Still, they walked in silence. The war hadn't really been that costly for them. They had lost a few of their elder lionesses, but worse was the fact that this war had claimed the life of Itikio, and possibly her mother. The war had finished after Balaa had been killed. It seemed after that, that the hyenas couldn't fight any more. Not because they didn't want to, but they just couldn't. Huduma, (who had survived but could probably never fly again) he simply put it that the hyenas had never understood leadership. Balaa and Kiza, who were the exceptions, won little support until Huduma showed up. Huduma had been a leader with Daraka, so as long as he was working "with" Kiza and Balaa, most of them were willing to fight. Hunter: Simba! Simba: (The group turn around) Hey Hunter Hunter: Hey Ania: Daddy! Hunter: (Smiles) Hi Ania. (He hugs her) Thank goodness we've still got you, hey? (To the others) Amani was devastated when she found out Murmur of excitement and happiness... Nala: Amani's alive? Hunter: Huh? Oh yeah, yeah, she woke up. I guess this is the first time you've heard, ain't it? She just wanted to stay behind with Itikio for a little bit, then she'll come home Kopa: Uncle Hunter...is Iti gonna come home? Hunter: I'm afraid not, Kopa, but she'll always be in our hearts. We'll never forget her... ......... Simba: Still, though, I can't help but think that we forgot something... Somewhere in the jungle, sitting on a rock, waiting, and eating bugs... Pumbaa: Hey, Timon, where are the others? Timon: They said they'd come and get us when they're about to leave Pumbaa: Oh, okay. The jungle was silent again…
