Confrontation with Scar

Simba returns to claim his place as king.

Banzai Ed Nala Pumbaa Rafiki Sarafina Scar
Sarabi Shenzi Simba Timon Zazu

(Moves towards Pride Rock and watches Scar from afar.)

(Furious) Sarabi!

(Makes way through an assembly of hyenas who snap at her heels. She looks aloof.) (Slowly) Yes, Scar?

Where is your hunting party? They're not doing their job.

(Calm, emotionless) Scar, there is no food. The herds have moved on.

(Angry) No, you're just not looking hard enough.

(Persistent) It's over. There is nothing left. We have only once choice: we must leave Pride Rock.

We're not going anywhere!

(Angry) Then you have sentenced us to death!

Then so be it!

(Disgusted) You can't do that!

I'm the king. I can do...whatever I want!

If you were half the king Mufasa was, you would've never had-

(Backhands Sarabi. Sarabi falls to the ground.) I'm ten times the king Mufasa was!

(Appears on ledge, growling furiously. He jumps down the acclivity and nudges his mother.)

(Nervous, scared) Mufasa? No- You're dead.

(Regains consciousness.) Mufasa?

No, it's me.

(Amazed) Simba? You're alive? How can that be?

(Quiet, lovingly) It doesn't matter. I'm home.

(Confused) Simba? (Composed and cynical) Simba! I'm a little surpised to see you... (glances at his hyena henchmen) alive.

(Gulp nervously.)

(Stern) Give me one good reason why I shouldn't rip you apart.

(Backs into the side of a precipice.) (Nervous) Oh, Simba, you must understand- The pressures of ruling a kingdom-

Are no longer yours. Step down, Scar.

Oh, oh, ye- Well, I would, heh, naturally, heh. However, there is one little problem. You see them? (Points upward to a mass of hyenas ontop the precipice.) (Reassured) They think I'm king.

(With another lioness, nudges Sarabi back to her feet.)

(Appears among the lionesses.) Well, we don't. Simba is the rightful king.

The choice is yours, Scar. Either step down or fight.

(Sarcastically) Oh, must it all end in violence?! I'd hate to be responsible for the death of a family member. Wouldn't you agree, Simba?

That's not going to work, Scar. I've put it behind me.

(Walks up to the lionesses.) Eh, but what about your faithful subjects? Have they put it behind them?

(Bewildered, confused)

Simba, what is he talking about?

(Delighted) Ah, so you haven't told them your little secret. Well, Simba, now's your chance to tell them. Tell them who is responsible for Mufasa's death!

(Eyes and mouths wide open, all holding breath.)

...I am.

(Approaches her son, emotionally wrecked.) It's not true. Tell me it's not true.

...It's true.

(Raising his voice) You see?! He admits it! Murderer!

(Upset) No! It was an accident!

(Walks around Simba in a circle.) If it weren't for you, Mufasa would still be alive. It's your fault he's dead. (Raising voice) Do you deny it?

No.

(Harshly) Then. You're. Guilty!

(Voice breaking) No, I'm not a murderer!

(Cynical, approaching Simba. Simba backs further and further to the ledge of Pride Rock.) Oh, Simba, you're in trouble again, but this time, daddy isn't here to save you - and now everyone knows why!

(Hind legs slip off the ledge. Grasps the cliff with his forepaws. Lightning strikes the bottom of the cliff, igniting some dry brush.)

Simba!

(Sits down, puts a forepaw to his mouth, and pretends to think.) Now this looks familiar. Hmm. Where have I seen this before? Let me think. Hmm, hmm. (Feigning enlightenment) Oh, yes, I remember. (Harshly) This is just the way your father look before he died. (Grabs Simba's paws with his claws, scratching him. Leans over and whispers) And here's my little secret: I killed Mufasa.

(Quickly remembers the sight of his father's death) Noooooooo! (Springs up the cliff and pins Scar to the ground with a quick thud. Scar is horror-stricken.) Murderer!

(Surprised, confused)

(Terrified) No, Simba. Please.

Tell them the truth!

Truth? But truth is in the eye of the behold- (Simba places his forepaw on Scar's throat.) Ggch! (Struggling to speak) All right. All right! (Simba removes forepaw from his throat.) (Barely audible) I did it.

So they can hear you!

(Slowly and angrily) I killed Mufasa!

(Nala runs towards Scar. Hyenas jump down and attack Simba. The lionesses attack the hyenas. Nala swipes one away. Timon arrives riding Pumbaa.)

Hiya!

(Bowling over some hyenas) 'Scuse me. Pardon me. Comin' through! Hot stuff! Whoo!

(Defeats some hyenas, but is bitten by one in the neck and howls.)

(Smashes the head of a hyena with his staff. Peforms a battle scream and jumps into a circle of hyenas. One by one, each hyena lunges forward and is either kicked or batted away.) Wah! Hazow! Ya! Yah! Hyoww!

(Switches scenes)

(Chase Timon)

(Runs into the lions' cave, and flees into a cage made out of ribs, holding a captive Zazu.)

Let me out! Let me out!

Let me in! Let me in! (Turns towards the glaring hyenas, pleaing) Pleeaase don't eat me.

(Appears at the cave's entrance) Problem?

Hey, who's the pig?

(Sternly) Are you talking to me?

(To Shenzi) Uh, oh. They called him a pig.

(Furious) Are you talking to me?!

Shouldn't a done that.

Are you talking to me?!

Now they're in for it.

They call me "Mister Pig!" (Screams and charges the hyenas. Ed waits nervously outside as he observes the commotion.)

Take that! And that!

Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!

Take that! And that! You yellow-belly...

Take that, you stupid...

(Shenzi and Bonzai run out and trip over Ed. All three hyenas flee. Timon and Pumbaa exit the cave.)

(Chanting) Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!

(Scene switches. Simba sees Scar ascending Pride Rock. He persues his uncle to the edge and corners him.)

(Quietly, harshly) Murderer.

(Pleading) Simba, Simba, please. Please have mercy. I beg you.

You don't deserve to live.

But, Simba...I am, ah, family. (Blurts) It's the hyenas who are the real enemy; it was their fault. It was their idea!

(Looking down from some rocks. Growl and back away)

Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie.

What are you going to do? You wouldn't kill your old uncle...? (Nervous grin)

No, Scar. I'm not like you.

(Relieved) Oh, Simba, thank you! You are truly noble. I'll make it up to you, I promise. How can I, ah, prove myself to you? Tell me. I mean, anything.

(Quiet, angry) Run. Run away, Scar. And never return.

(Slowly) Of course... As you wish, (spotting a pile of hot coals) your Majesty! (Swipes the coals into Simba's eyes.)

Aah! (Rolls eyes and paws away the coals.)

(Simba and Scar land heavy blows upon one another. Scar knocks Simba down to the floor, on his back. Simba looks up to find Scar leaping towards him. Simba extends his limbs and uses Scar's momentum to push his body right over him. Scar is thrown off the edge and lands heavily at the bottom.)

(Opens his eyes and weakly gets up. Spotting Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, he smiles graciously.) Ah, my friends.

(Smiling, chuckling) Frie-heh-ends? I thought he said we were the enemy!

That's what I heard!

Ed?

(Laughs maniacally/evilly)

(Mortified) No. L-l-l-le-le-le-le-let me explain. No, you don't understand. No! I didn't mean for- No! No! Look, I'm sorry I called you- No! No!

(Shows Scar's shadow being torn apart by many hyena shadows. Rain falls, dousing the fire that had accumulated from the burning brush. Simba descends Pride Rock, passes Sarafina, and meets his mother and Nala. Rafiki motions with his staff for Simba to ascend Pride Rock as king. Simba approaches Rafiki and hugs him.)

(Taken aback, he hugs Simba as well.) It is time!

(Simba ascends pride rock and looks up at an opening in the cloudy sky.)

(Mufasa's voice): Remember...

(Simba gains confidence and roars.)

(Roar in reply)

(The roaring continues)

(Scenes switch to the Pridelands, healthy and in full-bloom as it once was before Scar's tyranny. Zooms in on Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, and Nala ontop of Pride Rock. Timon shakes his arms as a sign of victory. Zazu flies up and meets them. The herds of animals below make noise as a sign of respect.)

(Arrives with Simba and Nala's newborn cub. He goes to the ledge of Pride Rock and lifts the cub in the air ceremonially.)
