Wolf Quest Script

Balto II Copyright 2002 Universal & Amblin Entertainment. Transcribed by Kamotz

{Movie starts out in Balto's dream sequence.}
{Balto is being chased by a raven. The ice cracks, then the cracks form ice walls. Balto slides up one ice wall, then down it. The ice wall smashes down, breaking the ice up into ice flows. Balto almost falls underwater, but manages to stay on a piece of ice. He jumps from one piece of ice to another, landing on a single piece of ice, out of breath. The raven flies over him. Balto runs from this mysterious raven, towards a pack of wolves with yellow glowing eyes. The ice ends, so he jumps on an ice flow that happens to be floating towards the wolves.}
Boris: BALTO! WAKE UP! {Throws bucket of water on a now awake Balto.}
Balto: Huh? What? What? What's the matter?
Boris: The matter is, you are having dream again.
{Balto shakes water all over Boris. Boris yells.}
Balto: So what if I was? It's just a dream.
Boris: Hah! This "just a dream" is keeping you from a decent sleep! And if your eyes get any droopier, you will have to keep them open with toothpicks! {Sticks his "finger" under Balto's eyelid to emphasize his point.}
Balto: Boris, they'll stop drooping if you'll just go away and let me get some rest.
Boris: Wrong! You won't be getting any rest, not with that dream hanging 'round like...dark cloud. {Sticks his wings over his head.}
Balto: I hate it when you get dramatic.
Boris: How else to reach you? I'm telling you, boitshick, if you keep having same dream again and again, it MEANS SOMETHING.
Balto: Boris, dreams don't mean anything. They're just {yawns} dreams. Now, you wanna come with me? I have to go check on Jenna.
Boris: Of course I come. I'm not finished nagging you yet!
{They walk out of the boat and approach the totem pole that marks the shortcut to Jenna's house.}
Boris: So, if dreams mean nothing, why does it always have raven and pack of wolves, huh? Why not pickled herring?
Balto: Because herring would be in one of your dreams, not mine.
Boris: Precisely. Raven and wolves have meaning only to you! {Gasps as he looks at the totem pole.} Balto, look! On totem pole! There is raven and wolf! {On "wolf," Boris pulls Balto's neck to make him look at the wolf carving at the bottom.}
Balto: Calm down, Boris! There's also a fox, and a wolverine--
Boris: Oy! Such scary creatures! They should only live in...uh, well, far away from me!
Balto: And a bear and a caribou. They're just wood carvings, Boris.
Boris: Yes, I know. Humans use them to tell stories, but of what, I don't know. Balto! {Runs up to Balto.} Maybe seeing raven and wolf on totem pole is making you dream sometheing very important!
Balto: Like what?
Boris: Like maybe something you forgot, or maybe somthing you are supposed to know.
{Balto becomes exasperated and shows it on his face.}
Balto: Look, Boris, all I know is that the totem pole marks the shortcut to Jenna's, and that's good enough for me.
{Boris and Balto enter town.}
Boris: Hoo boy! Stubborn! Ach.
{Scene switch.}
{Balto and Boris arrive in town.}
{A hyperactive Scottie runs up, yipping, and crashes into Balto's leg.}
Scottie: Oh! There ya are, laddies! I've been smelling all over for ya! {Hops up and down and yaps.}
Boris: Would you stop with the bouncing and make with the talking?! I'm gettin' dizzy!
Scottie: The stork has landed! I repeat, the stork has landed!
Balto: Jenna? Jenna!
Boris: What stork? I thought we were talking about raven! {Realizes.} Oh boy. That stork! I'm coming, Balto!
{Balto followes the Scottie and enters the shed where Jenna is staying.}
Jenna: Hello, Balto. {Balto gulps.} Well, come in, they don't bite. At least, not yet.
{Balto walks in and sees the litter of six. One is more wolfish than the rest, who all look like huskies.}
Balto: Oh, Jenna. They're so beautiful. Just like you. {He sees Aleu.}
Jenna: And you. {They nuzzle each other.}
Boris: Look at me. I'm an uncle!
{The Scottie runs in, yipping. Boris kicks the annoying little dog far out of the shed.}
{Scene switch}
{The pups are now eight weeks old. We see Aleu playing with Balto's ears. Balto runs, and all of the pups follow him.}
{Second dream sequence.}
{Camera zooms in on totem pole. Starting at the bottom, and working its way up. The raven's wings start moving, then it transforms into a real raven. It flies off. We then see Balto squirming around in his bed. His eye opens and we see the raven flying in it. Shifts back to dream. We see Balto's feet as he is running. Once again he is approaching the ice wall. This time, a light shines on him. He turns back to see what it is. It's Jenna.}
Jenna: Balto...
Balto: Jenna?
{The raven starts chasing him. He runs toward Jenna. The giant shadow of the raven is cast over him. Balto is frozen in fear...}
{Balto wakes up, out of breath.}
Balto: I haven't had that dream in a while.
{He hears a voice from out side the boat.}
Jenna: Balto!
Balto: Jenna? Oh no. {He walks out of his boat onto the deck.}
Jenna: Good morning, sleepyhead. Did you forget about watching the pups today while my girl and I go on a picnic?
Balto: What, me? Forget? {Yawns.} Never.
{Balto jumps down from his boat.}
Jenna: Balto, you look so tired. What's wrong?
Balto: Oh, nothing.
{A pup climbs on top of his head.}
Balto: Hey, pups, good to see you too! {Balto rolls over on his back and they hop on his belly.} Hey, watch it now! Oh, c'mon, that tickles!{He gives up and lets them chew on him.}
{Aleu starts running and the other pups follow.}
{Jenna walks up to Balto.}
Balto: Say, how 'bout they spend the night with me, and tomorrow we can all go on a picnic?
Jenna: Balto, don't you remember? Tomorrow is the day for our pups to find their new homes.
Balto: Tomorrow? But Jenna, they're only eight weeks old. I mean, what's the hurry?
Jenna: I know how you feel, Balto.
Boris: Boitshicks! Come to Uncle Boris!
Pups: Uncle Boris! Uncle Boris!
Jenna: But it's their time now. Why, I was their age when I was adopted by my girl.
Balto: But I don't think I can let them go, Jenna. Not yet. {He sadly watches the pups play with Boris.}
Jenna: Balto, each of our children have their own lives to live. It's our job to love them, and then...
Boris: LET GO!
Jenna: If we wait any longer, it will be harder for them to find homes. You know how humans have a soft spot for puppies.
Balto: Yeah. And so do I.
Jenna: Come on, Balto. All their humans will be from around here. Oh, I've got to meet my girl now. Enjoy them, Balto, and watch out. They're teething!
Boris: NO KIDDING!
Balto: C'mon, now. Uncle Boris isn't a chew toy.
{All of the pups let go except for Aleu.}
Balto: Hey, take it easy there, Tiger. {He pulls Aleu off of Boris' leg. Aleu giggles and nips at Balto's nose. Then she runs off to play with the other pups.}
{Boris walks up to Balto.}
Boris: Strange. Her brothers and sisters look just like dogs, but Aleu looks just like--
Balto: A dog. Aleu looks like a dog too.
Boris: Funny, but from where I'm standing, I see daughter who looks even more wolf than father.
Balto: Look, Boris. I just don't want her to be different.
Boris: But she is different! And vive la differant! Ha, ha, ha!
Balto: C'mon, Boris, being different is painful. No one knows that better than me. You know how some of the dogs around here still tease me because I'm half wolf? Aleu may look like a wolf, but she is going to be all dog.
{Aleu howls.}
Boris: I wouldn't count on it.
{Scene switch.}
{In town. Aleu is howling in the background.}
Boy: Daddy, Daddy, look at the puppies!
Jenna: Aleu, honey, please don't howl like that.
{One of the pups sighs in relief.}
Aleu: Sorry, Mama. It just happens when I'm excited.
{Another pup pins Aleu.}
Pup: I'm excited too! I can't wait to get a human! And chew on their socks! {The pups keep playfighting.} Papa! Are you gonna get a human too?
Balto: Naw. People like cute little puppies like you, not old grizzly grown-ups like me.
Boy: These are Rosy's puppies, Daddy. Jenna had 'em. I like... This one! {Picks up Dingo.}
Jenna: I know that human. He'll be a good boy for Dingo.
Boy: And my puppy can play with Jenna, when Rosy and I play together.
{A girl comes over to the box.}
Girl: Mommy, Mommy, look! Puppies!

[Taking You Home]

Somebody wants you,
Somebody needs you,
Someone is searching
For your heart alone

Someone is dreaming
Waiting and watching
Someone is coming
To take you home

Time, it will fly
Like the sun in the sky
And what once was hello
Turns to goodbye

Tomorrow is here now
Sings in your ear now
Child of my heart
Your life is your own

Never you fear now
Your path is clear now
Someone who loves you
Someone who loves you
Is taking you home.

{Everyone has been adopted except Aleu.}
{Aleu waves to the last puppy taken.}
{Fade to black.}
Balto: It's been a long day, Jenna. Let's go home.
Jenna: But we can't. Well, not until a human adopts Aleu.
Balto: Face it, Jenna. Aleu looks more like a wolf than me. No human is ever gonna want her.
Jenna: That's not true! We'll just have to keep trying.
{Scene Switch.}
{The moon phases change a few times to give the impression that time is passing.}
{Scene switch.}
{Muk and Luk are playing Hide-and-Seek when they bump into each other. They scream.}
Muk: Right. Who knew a game of Hide-and-Seek could be so terrifying?
{They hear a growl in the distance. They see a wolfish figure running towards them. When light falls on the silhouette, you see that it's only a year-old Aleu.}
{Aleu pounces on the bears and they yell. Aleu howls and the bears shiver in fear.}
Boris: Oy! Okay already. Knock off the roughhousing!
Aleu: Ohh. {She lets the bears up.}
Boris: Aleu, how can I babysit, if you don't sit? You don't sit nowhere for more than five seconds.
Aleu: That's anywhere, Uncle Boris.
Boris: What's anywhere? Don't try to confuse me, young lady. I'm your babysitter!
Aleu: Uncle Boris, since I'm not a baby anymore, I don't need a babysitter. And you can tell that to my father.
{Balto appears.}
Balto: Come on, Aleu. You'll always be my baby. No matter how old you are.
Aleu: You're hopeless. {To the bears.} Let's go.{She walks off with Muk and Luk.} What's gonna happen when a human picks me up, huh, Papa? Who are you gonna baby then? {She runs off again.} C'mon, guys.
{The bears start following her again.}
Balto: She's a good pup.
Boris: Good, yes. Pup, no. At more than year old, Aleu should have home of her own.
Balto: When the right time comes... She'll find a home.
Boris: Yes, but when the right time comes, will you let her?
{Balto walks off.}
Boris: Oy. I hope so.
{Story shifts back to Muk, Luk, and Aleu.}
{The bears are playing See-saw with a log and a boulder.}
Muk: Wheehee! Ride'em cowboy!
Aleu: Yipee!
{Muk is bouncing on the logh, and when he goes up, Aleu jumps under him.}
{The raven flies overhead. Aleu stares up at it, as if in a trance, but she breaks out of it when she hears a crackle in the brush. She sees a human. She slowly approaches him while sniffing. She turns away. He loads his gun and takes aim at her. Aleu sees him and gasps.}
Aleu: No, it's a human. He wouln't hurt me. Maybe he'll want to adopt me.
{The raven flies overhead. Aleu runs toward the hunter He gets his gun ready to shoot. Just in the nick of time, Balto appears and pounces the hunter. The gun goes of and almost hits Muk, but nobody's hurt. Aleu gasps.}
Muk: Sounds like trouble, Mate!
{They push the log off the boulder and it rolls towards Balto and Aleu with the bears on it.}
Muk: Bears to the rescue!
{Boris flies in.}
Aleu: Papa, what's going on? Stop!
Boris: Goose to the rescue!
{He crashes into the hunter and he drops his gun.}
{The bears and the log hit him too.}
Balto: Is everyone alright?
Muk: Right as rain. {Falls over.}
Balto: C'mon, we've gotta get out of here! {Pause} Aleu! Now!
Boris: What'sa matter? Taking nap? {Lifts up Muk.} C'mon! Hurry up!
{The hunter gets up.}
Hunter: The spirits must be trying to trick me!
{He gets his things and leaves.}
Aleu: I don't understand, Papa! Why did you attack him? What if he wanted to adopt me?
Balto: Uh, guys... Could you help me out here?
Muk: Oh of course--{Luk pushes him out}--Sorry, Mate, but a wise polar bear always minds his own buisness.
Boris: Ah-hem. It is my opinion that--{Luk grabs him by the neck.}
Aleu: Well?
Balto: Okay. See, that hunter was looking for wild animals to kill for food and fur.
Aleu: So? I'm not a wild animal.
Balto: Well, he thought you were.
Aleu: What? Why? Balto: He thought you were a wolf.
{Scene switch.}
Aleu: I knew there was something wrong with me.
Balto: There is nothing wrong with you. You have a proud heritage.
Aleu: Oh, sure!
Balto: You're mother is a purebred husky.
Aleu: Then what are you?
Balto: I'm the one who's part wolf.
Aleu: How could this happen?
Balto: Look, Aleu. My dad was a husky who had pups with a wolf.
Aleu: Great! My grandmother was a wild animal? Did the wolf teach you how to know when a human wants to kill you?
Balto: I was accidentally seperated from her when I was youn, so I never spent much time with...the wolf. But I remember that she was as white as snow, and she had this warm voice that made me feel safe. Then Boris took me in, and after being raised by a goose, it's a wonder I don't honk instead of bark.
{Boris is swabbing the deck. He looks back and smiles.}
Aleu: Why didn't you tell me this before?
Balto: Because...I wanted to protect you.
Aleu: Protect me? From what? The fact that no human will ever want me because I'm part wild animal?
Balto: Aleu--
Aleu: And what about my brothers and sisters? They've got wolf in them too. Why did humans want them?
Balto: Because they don't look it...and you do.
Aleu: It's not fair. I hate you! {She runs off.}
Balto: Aleu! Aleu come back!
Aleu: Leave me alone!
{We see Aleu running through the Pacific-Northwestern.}
Aleu: Where do I belong?
{Scene Switch.}
{Balto is dreaming again and writhing in his bed.}
Balto: What is it? What do you want?
{Dream sequence.}
{It starts out with his eye agianst a black background, but we then see his whole body. He is running from the raven, towards a herd of caribou. The ice walls collapse. The caribou are leaping across the ice flows.}
Aniu: My son, you need to know the animal totems who will help guide you now. The Fox: A cunning trickster {Fox Totem appears} The Wolverine: Your Fears {Wolverine Totem appears} The Bear: Inner knowing {Bear Totem appears} Caribou: Life {Caribou Totem apppears} Awooooooo! {Wolf Totem appears.}
{Balto wakes up. Muk and Luk have entered the ship and are looking for Aleu.}
Balto: What are you two doing?
Muk: Shhh. We're here to play with Aleu. {Circles Luk once.} But Aleu's not here to play.
Balto: She's around here somewhere--Wait, you mean, you can't find her?
Muk: No.
Luk: Uh-uh.
Balto: I just wanted to give her some time. I was sure she'd come home. She's gotta be at her mother's!
{Balto runs out of the boat. Luk starts crying.}
Muk: I know. I wish we had a mum too.
{Balto stops at the totem pole, circles it once, then keeps going.}

{Scene Switch.}
{Jenna is sleeping in her house.}
Balto: Jenna.
Jenna: Balto, what are you doing here so early? Is Aleu all right?
Balto: I don't know. I was hoping she was with you. She's...kind of mad at me.
Jenna: Stay there. {She leaves the window and comes out the door.} Now, tell me what happened!
{Balto comes down from the roof.}
Balto: A hunter took aim at her.
{Jenna gasps.}
Balto: No, don't worry. We got away. But I-I finally had to tell her how humans see her.
Jenna: You mean you've told her about being part...
Balto: Yes. We should have done it sooner, I know that now. She's so angry with me...she must have run away.
Jenna: Run away!
Balto: I'm sorry, Jenna. I never thought it would turn out this way. I thought I could keep her safe.
Jenna: But she's not safe now, she's running wild! We've got to find her!
Balto: No. Not you, Jenna. This is my fault, and it's something Aleu and I have to work out together. Don't worry. I'll find her.
{Jenna nuzzles Balto.}
{Scene Switch.}
Balto sniffs by the ocean and fins her scent. He follows it.}
{He is looking by the river when an fog forms the shape of Aniu's head.}
{Balto sees it and is startled even after it's gone. The raven appears.}
Balto: You. What is it you want?
{Balto chases the raven.}
Balto: Am I supposed to follow you? {It caws.} Okay. But only if you help me find my daughter. {He keeps following the raven into the fog.} Wait! I can't follow you in this! Where are you?
Fox: Where are you?
Balto: Here. Keep talking and I'll find you.
{He walks onto a log bridge.}
Aniu: The cunning trickster.
{The red fox appears.}
Fox: You look disappointed.
Balto: Sorry. I-I just thought you might be a raven.
Fox: And I thought you might be a hunter, but unlike you, I'm not disappointed. Say, I'll help you find your daughter if you'll help me out of this trap.
Balto: How did you know I'm looking for my daughter?
Fox: The raven told me.
Balto: What do you know about the raven?
Fox: Less than you, I'm sure. No, do we have a deal, or don't we?
Balto: Yes. But no tricks. {He pulls her out of the "trap."} There. Now, how can you help me find my daughter?
Fox: Easy. {Rubs up against him.} By giving you a little push. {She pushes Balto off the bridge.}
Balto: Ahhhhh! {He goes down, floats some, then comes back up.} Why did you do that? Help me!
Fox: Ah, but I did. And now you must help yourself!
Balto: Are you crazy? The current is too strong!
Fox: Then let the current take you!
{Balto is being pulled by the current.}
{Scene Switch.}
{There is a toad hopping. Luk is mimicing it, so the toat is being quite jostled. The toad eats a fly as the bears watch intently. They hear the toat croak, so they puff up their cheeks. Boris appears.}
Boris: What're you meshugana bears doin'? {He pokes their faces so the air comes out of their mouths.}
Muk: Uh, gee, Uncle Boris, Luk and me, uh, we was just tryin' to communicate with the toad.
Boris: Communicate with toad.
Luk: Ribbit.
Muk: Yah. See there? Luk just asked it if it's seen Aleu.
Boris: You bears are a bagel short of a bushel! I don't know why I put up with you!
Muk: Sorry, Uncle Boris. Do you still need us?
Boris: Yes. Like hole in the head. Now close your mouths. And keep nose out for them.
{Muk and Luk sniff around. Luk has apparently found something.}
Boris: Now what? You two have ants in pants?
{Muk and Luk grab Boris.}
Boris: Ahh! Balto! Balto can you hear me?
{Balto is lying across the river.}
Balto: Boris?
Boris: Don't worry, Boitshick, Boris is coming!
{They run out into the river. A fog surrounds them.}
Muk: What's happening, Uncle Boris?
Boris: I don't know. I can't see nothing! Balto! Balto!
{Balto sniffs.}
Balto: It's Aleu!
Boris: Balto! Answer me!
Balto: Boris! I've got Aleu's trail! Go back and tell Jenna not to worry. I'm going to find Aleu and bring her home!
Boris: Oy. Come. We do as Balto says, and go tell Jenna.
Muk: But Uncle Boris, Luk and me wanted to go on a journey!
Boris: I'm sorry, boys, but this journey is for Balto and Aleu alone.
{Aniu appears on a high rock.}
{Fade to black.}
{Scene Switch.}
Jenna: What do you mean, he just ran off?
Boris: I mean he's got Aleu's scent. Told me to tell you not to worry, and away he went. He's a wolf on a mission.
Jenna: I'm going to go help him look.
Boris: {Sighs.} No, Jenna. This is a journey for father and daughter. You must have faith in them.
Jenna: You're sure Balto has her trail?
Boris: {Nods.} Mm-hmm.
Jenna: And you're sure Balto's alright?
Boris: Don't worry, Jenna. Remember, they're well-equipped. They are both part wolf.
{Fade to black.}
{Scene Switch.}
Aniu: Your fears.
{Balto is retreating from three wolverines.}
Balto: I have no reason to fight the wolverine clan. What do you want?
Wolverine 1: You invade our territory. What do you want?
Balto: Only to pass through unharmed. I'm looking for my daughter.
Wolverine 1: He's looking for his daughter.
Wolverine 2: Yes, and he's following a raven!
Wolverine 3: A raven? Why not a fox? Or did she outwit you?
Wolverine 1: Tell me, are you afraid?
Balto: No!
Wolverine 1: Come, now. Are you sure?!
Balto: Okay, okay. I'm afraid.
Wolverine 2: Of course you are!
Wolverine 3: And you must listen to your fears. Let them lead you back to the safety of your cozy little home!
Wolverine 1: Look, how he's giving in to the fear.
Wolverine 3: Yes, and soon he'll run home like the whimpering dog that he is!
Balto: NO! I'm afraid, but not of you. I'm afraid for my daughter, and I have to find her, so get out of my way!
Wolverine 1: Stop following the raven.
All Wolverines: Go home! Go home! {They disappear.}
Balto: Huh? It's like they were never here.
{Aniu is sitting on a nearby peak. She disappears as the wolverines did.}
{Scene Switch.}
{Aleu is on a rock, panting.}
Aleu: What am I doing? I'm running away, but I have no idea where I'm going. I've gotta get out of this sun.
{The raven appears.}
Aleu: Are you following me? {The raven points out a cave.} A cave. At least it will be dark and cool inside.
{Fade to black.}
{When Aleu wakes up, she begins to hear singing. She moves closer to it so she can hear where it's coming from.}
[Muru's Chant]
Muru:Praise for the high tide
Praise for the seaside
Praise for the sun at high noon
Praise for the lightning
Praise for the singing
Praise the Father Sun
And Sister Moon

Praise for the red dawn
Grass that we walk upon
Praise for the river's whispered tune
Praise for the wind brother
Praise for the earth mother
Praise the father sun
And sister moon
Praise the father sun
And sister moon
Hey-a, hey-a hey-a
Aleu: Awoooo!
Hey-a, hey-a hey-a
Aleu: Awoooo!

Muru: Your singing is quite beautiful
Aleu: Oh, thank you. Sometimes I just can't help myself. I'm sorry, did I interrupt you?
Muru: Oh, no. I love to hear wolves sing. It's one of your specialties. You also have such a keen sense of smell. Such wonderful creatures you are.
Aleu: I'm not a wolf.
Muru: Oh. Then that is why I'm not afraid of you. Why be afraid of one who does not know who she is?
Aleu: I know who I am. I am Aleu, daughter of Balto and Jenna, who happens to be a purebred husky. Who are you? {Growls.}
Muru: {Unfazed} I am Muru, son of Kahu and Quillac, both of them, simple field mice. This answer tells us what we are, but not who we are.
Aleu: Okay, then how do I find out who I am?
{Muru is adjusting a prisim.}
Aleu: What are you doing?
Muru: I am shedding light, where darkness lies.
[Who You Really Are]
Muru: {Speaking} When every creature in the world is born, a spirit stands beside them.
Aleu: {Speaking} Why?
Muru: {Speaking} To light their way through the long dark night, and sing them songs to guide them.
Aleu: {Speaking} Why?
Muru: {Speaking} Because each of us has a destiny that sets us all apart.
The path is different for you and me, but the journey begins in the heart.
You must go to the east, {Singing} go to the west
The road is rocky and the way is far
It's a dangerous trail
A difficult quest
If you want to know
Who you really are.
Muru and Chorus: There are forces all around you
To comfort and to guide you
Fathers and teachers
Powerful creatures
And a voice that sings inside you

Chorus: Or you can turn back around
Run along home
Back to the place where you're friends are
Perhaps that is best
You need the rest
Who wants to go on a ridiculous quest?

Unless you want to know
You truly want to know
Unless you want to know
Who you really are

Who are you?
Who are you?

Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?

Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?

Aleu: Muru, are you my spirit guide? Are you hear to help me?
{Muru has turned into a drawing on the wall.}
Muru: Have faith and trust in yourself, and make the journey.
Aleu: Muru? Muru?
{She sees that he has turned into a drawing.}
{Aleu starts to leave the cave, but she is confronted by a bear at the exit.}
{Aleu gasps}
{The bear growls then roars.}
{Aleu runs out of the cave. The bear follows. Aleu is about to fall off the cliff, when Balto jumps and grabs the bear's paw, in such a way that it reminds you of when Jenna came to save Balto.}
Aleu: Papa!
{Bear throws him against a branch.}
Balto: Glad you're still speaking to me.
{Aleu manages to elude the bear.}
Aleu: Save yoursef, Papa!
Balto: What, and miss all the excitement? {He gets up and distracts the bear while Aleu runs. The bear throws Balto off, then tosses Aleu. She is hanging from the edge of the cliff. A very Lion King-like sight. The bear approaches Aleu.}
Balto: Oh no ya don't! {He runs up and grabs the bear's leg. The bear loses his balance and lands on Balto. Balto crawls out from under the bear. Aleu is about to fall off.}
Aleu: Papa!
{Balto takes a stick. Aleu grabs on to it and Balto pulls her up. The bear is still not defeated. He gets up and swipes at them.}
Balto: I'll hold him off and you run for it!
Aleu: No, I'll hold him off and you run for it!
Balto: There's no time to argue. I'm your father, you do what I say!
Aleu: And I say that I'm to big to be ordered around!
Balto: How did you get so stubborn?
Aleu: I take after you, remember?
{Aleu stares into the bear's eyes. Her eyes glow yellow.}
Aleu: Wow.
{Balto realizes what's happening.}
Aniu: Inner knowing.
Aleu: We've got to jump!
Balto: But we'll be killed!
Aleu: And we'll be killed if we don't! {She pushes her father over.} {To the bear.} I hope you're right. {She jumps off too.}
{The bear disappears, and Balto and Aleu have landed safely on a ledge.}
Balto: You knew the ledge was here.
Aleu: Yeah, I did, sorta.
Balto: How?
Aleu: I looked at the bear...No, I looked at his thoughts, and I saw it. Why did you come and find me?
Balto: I came to bring you home, Aleu.
Aleu: No. I don't wanna go home. Not until I find out who I am.
Balto: That's ridiculous, Aleu, you know who you are.
Aleu: No. I know what I am, but not...who I am, and I'm not stopping until I find out.
Balto: Then I'm coming with you.
Aleu: Oh, Papa.
Balto: {Sniffs.} It's salt water. We're close to the ocean. Come on!
{Scene Switch.}
{They arrive at the beach. The tide is coming in and the raven is flying around.}
Balto: I sure would like to know why I keep seeing that raven.
Aleu: You've been following a raven?
Balto: Yeah. I know it sounds dumb. I keep seeing this raven in my dreams.
Aleu: Your dreams?
Balto: Yeah. I only followed it because it promised to help me find you.
Aleu: I've been seeing a raven too. I wasn't sure if I was following it, or if it was following me.
{We now see a few wolves spying on them.}
Yak: You think that could be them, Sumac?
Sumac: It's beating me. What do you think, Nuk? Huh? Huh?
Nuk: {Chews on bone.} I don't think. I just eat. It's more filling.
{Niju appears.}
Niju: What are you waiting for? Get them!
Yak: Okay, okay. You don't have to yell.
Aleu: Why a raven? Why here?
Balto: I wish I knew.
{Aleu starts sniffing.}
Balto: What is it?
Aleu: Company. And it doesn't smell friendly.
Balto: See anything?
Aleu: No. Maybe I was wrong. {Gasps} Look Papa! Oh, I love it here! It's so wild! C'mon!
{Aleu hops up onto a rock that's overlooking the sea. Balto follows her out.}
Balto: Don't go out too far, Aleu. The tide's coming in fast!
Aleu: I'll be fine!
Balto: I don't like you being out here! You could slip and fall.
Aleu: Papa, you've got to stop worrying about me.
Yak: And start worrying about us!
Sumac: Yes, us, because we're mean! Right, Nuk?
Nuk: Yeah, espescially when I'm hungry!
Balto: Look, we don't want any trouble. If this is your territory, we'll just go.
Yak: Sorry, but you are not going {scratches fleas} nowhere!
Aleu: That's anywhere, fleabag!
Balto: Aleu, I hardly think this is the time to be correcting his grammar.
Aleu: Papa!
{The wolves advance, but the raven startles them.}
Balto: At least we know the raven's on our side!
Aleu: C'mon, we can take 'em!
Balto: Aleu! No!
{Aleu tackles Yak. Balto tries to keep them off his daughter.}
{Aleu is hanging over the edge. Sumac tries to push her into the sea.}
Sumac: Bye bye, doggie!
Balto: Aleu! {He chases Sumac away and pulls Aleu up.}
Yak: Aww, and I thought all doggies could swim.
Sumac: Yeah, and don't they all go to Heaven? Heh heh, all doggies go to Heaven!
{The wolves corner the two dogs, but they get splashed by the tide.}
Sumac: The tide is coming! We've got to get out of here!
{The wolves all run away.}
Niju: Get back there, you sniveling cowards!
Sumac: But Niju, the tide! We'll drown.
Niju: Yes, there's always that chance, but if you don't take it, I'll make sure you drown! If those two live, they'll take what's left of our food!
{The wolves go back.}
{Nava and the rest of the clan appear.}
Nava: Stop! Clear a path for our visitors. Now!
{Sumac, Nuk, and Yak leave.}
Niju: I will not let them go, Nava! And I will not let you, and aging fool, destroy us with your weakness!
Nava: I admire your passion Niju, but do not mistake my old age for weakness, nor your youth for strength. I ask again: Will you clear the way for our visitors?
Niju: No!
{Nava signals to a whale. The whale splashes Niju. A few wolves laugh.}
Niju: Some day your tricks will not be enough to save you.
Nava: I'm sorry it had to be this way, Niju.
Balto: Thanks for your help.
Nava: You're welcome, but it is I who thank you, for coming at last.
Balto: You knew we were coming?
Nava: Of course. It was I who sent for you.
{Scene Switch.}
Nava: My brothers and siters, our summer is almost passed, and I have listened to the trees, and to the blades of grass, and they have said this: The caribou will not return this year, nor any other year, for they have crossed the great water.
{The wolves start talking and whispering.}
Nava: If we are to survive, we must follow them across.
Niju: Hah. The old one believes that trees and grass can talk. It is time to realize that our leader has lost his ability to lead!
Sumac: Yes.
Wolf 1: How dare you say that!
Wolf 2: Yes! Nava has always led us well.
Nava: Stop! Let him speak. It is his right.
Niju: Nava would have us leave the land that has been our clan's home for generations! So what if the caribou have not returned this year? This does not mean that they will not come again!
Wolf 1: Niju could be right!
Wolf 2: And he could be wrong.
Wolf 3: If we do stay, how will we survive without the caribou? They bring us life!
Niju: Simple. We'll take what we need from other clans!
Wolf 3: Steal from others?!
Wolf 1: It isn't right.
Wolf 2: When you're hungry, there is no right!
Niju: Yes there is a right! Our right to survive!
Nava: And if we eat the food of other clans, what will they eat?
Niju: That is not our concern.
Nava: Is not the balance of our world the concern of all? If we steal from other clans, those clans will be forced to steal as well. Soon, we will all ve fighting for less and less food.
Yak: Uh-oh, less and less food? That sounds bad, doesn't it, Sumac?
Sumac: Oh, yeah, yeah, really bad. Unless you're on diet.
Nuk: Who's on a diet?
Nava: Aniu, the white wolf, has come to me in dreamvisions, and she has told us what we must do. She said we must move on, and that we must be led by the one who is wolf, but does not know. {Looks at Balto.}
Aleu: Papa?
Balto: Look, I'm flattered, really. I mean, I've led a dog team before, but never a wolf pack.
Niju: See here. Our wise leader, who visits with the great Aniu only in his dreams, has sent a mutt to guide us!
{Nuk, Sumac, and Yak laugh.}
Yak: What's a mutt?
Nuk: Beats me.
{Aleu growls at Niju.}
Balto: It's alright, Aleu. His blood may be pure, but his motives aren't.
Aleu: I say Niju is afraid to cross the great water!
Niju: I am not afraid, but crossing the great watar is impossible! We cannot swim it! We would all die! So I, Niju, say Nava should step down, and let a true leader take his place.
Nava: I will step down, Niju, when a true leader takes my place.
{Niju lunges at Nava, but Nava is nowhere to be seen.}
Niju: Show yourself, Nava. Your magic tricks will not be enough to stop me! I will be a leader who does not depend on foolish dreams! Those who will, follow me!
{A few wolves, including Sumac, Yak, and Nuk follow him. Balto shakes his head.}
{Nava comes out of the tree where he was hiding.}
Aleu: How did you do that?
Nava: I simply became one with the tree.
Balto: If I tried that, I'd get splinters.
Aleu: Could you teach me?
Nava: It is a thing that cannot be taught. One just knows. {To Balto} But now, we must speak of how you will lead us to the caribou.
Balto: Nava, I don't understand how I can lead you anywhere.
{Aleu's eyes start to glow. She sees the caribou leaping across an ice flow bridge.}
Aleu: {Thinking} Caribou.
Balto: I had these dreams, but I don't even know what they mean.
Nava: Each of us has a unique gift. Perhaps your dreams show us the way.
{Nava walks away. The raven appears again.}
Aleu: {Thinking} Nava must be right.
Balto: This has gone too far, Aleu, and it isn't our battle.
Aleu: But Papa, I saw caribou!
Balto: Look, this could get very dangerous. Despite my dreams, {looks at raven} or anything else, I will not put you in any danger.
Aleu: But this isn't just about us, anymore, Papa. This is about something bigger. Don't you see? We're supposed to help them. I'm sorry, but whether I stay or go should be my descision.
Balto: That wind is a sign that winter's coming early. Your mother will be worried sick. We both leave in the morning.
{Aleu and Balto leave the area.}
{Scene Switch.}
{Aleu's dream sequence.}
{The dream starts out in the exact same way as Balto's first dream, even Balto in it, but when Blato starts floating, he is floating towards the ice flow bridge, and the caribou. Aleu is seeing the way across.}
{Aleu wakes up with a start. She runs over to where Nava is sitting}
Nava: A star dies and another is born. All is a great dance of balance. You have questions.
Aleu: Why is Niju so against moving the clan? What is he afraid of?
Nava: Niju is not a coward. He is not afraid to die. But he is afraid of change. He would rather face starvation than leave the land he believes is ours.
[The Grand Design]

Nava: This world through which we wander
Is wonderful, and strange.
The only truth we can really know
Is that everything will change.
Chorus: Like the rain that fills the ocean
Like the storm that shakes the pine
Chorus and Nava: We are all a part of the Grand Design

Niju: This has been our home forever
This is where the clan belongs!
Chorus: We were born beside this river
And we filled the night with songs

Chorus and Niju: We must fight for what belongs to us
What is yours and what is mine
Niju: We are all the masters of our own design

Chorus: The land no more belongs to us
Then the eagle owns the sky
We must fight for our survival
If we don't we'll surely die!

Nava: We are one with what surrounds us
Brothers to all we see
Niju: We are wolves, we take what we need
To stay alive and free

Chorus: The one thing we will surely learn
As we walk the path of time
No one can ever rise above
Niju: We are wolves, the masters of!
Nava and Chorus: We are all a part of the Grand Design
Hey-a, Hey-a, Hey-a,
Hey-a, Hey-a, Hey-a

{Scene Switch.}
Niju: We strike the Bear Clan first!
Wolves: Yeah!
{The wolves take off, but Balto stops them.}
Balto: You're not striking anyone, Niju.
Niju: You're outnumbered, Half-Breed!
{The wolves advance, growling.}
Aleu: Papa!
Balto: Nava is right, Aleu. Following the caribou is choosing life. I can't ignore my dreams any longer.
Niju: Your dreams will lead to our deaths!
Aleu: No, I've seen it too, Niju. We must follow the caribou across the water. Staying here would mean starvation for the clan!
Wolf 2: Hear that?
Wolf 4: She has seen it too!
Wolf 3: Maybe Niju is the fool!
Niju: I've heard enough! You will not stop us! Take them!
{The wolves advance once more, growling.}
Nava: Look! Aniu told me the time to leave would come with the great breaking of the ice! {As in Aleu's dream, the ice flows are coming together to form a bridge.} But more that that, I do not know.
Balto: The ice flows are lining up. It's like they're making a bridge or--
Aleu: A bridge to the caribou! Last winter the caribou crossed an ice bridge to land on the other side, and now that bridge is forming again!
Balto: Now I understand. If we're to cross, we must go now!
Wolf 5: The old one spoke the truth about Balto! We must go!
{Balto runs off, followed by the wolves, including Sumac, Yak, and Nuk.}
Niju: {Cuts Sumac, Yak, and Nuk off.} And just where do you think you three are going?
Nuk: I know I don't usually make thinking a habit, but Nava is right. Besides, I'm hungry! C'mon boys, let's go find some Caribou!
{They run past Niju.}
Niju: Get back here! I order you!
Balto: The ice bridghe will only hold for a short time. Buddy up then stick with your partner in case either of you gets hurt. I'll lead. Mush! {The wolves look bewildered.} I mean, uh, move out!
{They start across the ice bridge. Nava is having trouble crossing.}
Niju: No! You'll all die!
{The piece of ice where Nava is standing breaks off. Nava floats away.}
Aleu: Nava! {Aleu leaps to Nava's piece of ice.}
Balto: Aleu!
{Nava tries to pull her up, but he is unsucessful. It looks like Aleu will die, but she goes underwater just in time. Aleu swims around and finds an exit, but she has to squeeze out. She gasps for air. Nava pulls Aleu up.}
Balto: Aleu! Are you alright?
Aleu: Yes! You go on with the rest of the pack! I'll get Nava!
Balto: {Quietly} Be careful, Aleu.
{Niju leaps to Nava and Aleu's piece of ice. He lunges at Nava.}
Niju: The old ways will die along with you, old one!
{Niju is about to kill Nava when...}
Aleu: Stop!
Niju: You! I will teach you to mind your place!
Aleu: My place?
{Niju pounces her. They bite and growl. Nava pounces at Niju, but Niju throws him off. Niju has a Steele-like expression on his face as he goes for Aleu's neck.}
{Balto climbs up the ice.}
Balto: Niju! Leave her be!
Aleu: Papa! You should be with the rest of the clan! You've got to lead them across!
Balto: I will! Once I take care of him!
{The raven flies above them. The rest of the clan howls to them.}
Nava: We must go!
Niju: No! {Blocks them.} No one's going anywhere!
Aleu: But the clan!
Niju: They've chosen their fate. Now they will die!
Balto: Nava, Aleu and I can hold Niju off while you get to the clan. They need someone to lead them!
Aleu: But Papa, Nava won't be able to make the swim!
Nava: She is right. Only my spirit is strong now.
Balto: You wanted to be a leader, Niju. Well, now's your chance! Go!
Niju: {Looks off into the distance.} I won't! I'll never leave our land! Never! {Runs back to shore.}
Aleu: Papa!
Balto: I can help you swim over, Nava.
{Nava signals "no".}
Balto: No, you're right. You won't make it. I'll go.
Aleu: No. You don't belong here Papa. You belong home, with my mother. But I do belong here. It's my destiny.
Nava: Aniu told me it would be the one who is wolf but does not know. I belived it was you, but I was wrong. It is your daughter.
Balto: Are you sure?
{Aleu nods.}
Balto: It's just...So hard to let my baby go.
Aleu: Papa, I'm not your...Okay, so I'll always be your baby. {Nuzzles Balto.}Goodbye, Papa. Tell Mom...I've finally found my home. {She leaps into the sea and swims over to the clan. Balto remembers when Aleu was a little puppy.}
{Nuk and Yak help her onto the ice, much like the time when Kaltag and Nikki helped Balto up the cliff. Aleu howls a long, wolfish howl back to Balto.}
Balto: Goodbye, Daughter.
{The clan joins in the howling. Aleu's spirit guide, Muru appears and howls, then he is blown away again. Balto and Nava walk back to shore.}
Nava: She will be a great leader, and now it is time for you to go home.
Balto: What about you? You're alone now. Where will you go?
Nava: I will find Niju. We are still a clan and we'll not be whole without each other. Goodbye, my brother.
{Balto walks away. The raven follows him and transforms into Aniu.}
Balto: {Seeing the raven} Now what?
Aniu: Only the journey home, my son.
{Balto turns to look at her.}
Balto: Aniu? You're my...?
{Aniu nods, howls, then vanishes.}
Balto: Goodbye to you too, Mother.
THE END
