As the sun rises ovet the African plain, animals and birds stir, migrating throught the brilliant landscape past rose-tinted mountain peaks and a cascading waterfall. They are headed for Pride Rock-an impressive mountain standing tall and castle-like in the center of the Pride Lands. |
Animals of all kinds-elephants, antelope, giraffes, and cheetahs gather below Pride Rock and wait. Silence falls. Zazu, a fussbudget hornbill and the King's advisor, lands an a plateau where Mufasa, the regal Lion King waits. Zazu gestures to Mufasa that all is ready, then respectfully backs away. |

From the plateau, Mufasa looks at the animals gathered below. Then Rafiki, a wise old baboon, hobbles from the crowd and scales the. He pulls himself over the edge and makes his way over to Mufasa, who leads him to the place where Sarabi nestles her newborn cub. As Rafiki looks on at the happy family, Mufasa lovingly nuzzles Sarabi. The ceremony is about to begin. |
Like an ancient shaman, Rafiki shakes a gourd over newborn Simba. He cracks the gourd open and smears a little juice on the cub's forehead. Continuing the ceremony, he takes a handful of dirt and sprinkles it over Simba, who sneezes. Then Rafiki lifts Simba for all to see. The animals react with joy-elephants trumpet their trunks and zebras stamp their hooves. An new Lion King is born. |
After the ceremony, Mufasa and Zazu got to see Scar, Mufasa's devious, cunning brother. "I didn't see you at the presentation of Simba," Mufasa tells his brother, concerned. "Must have slipped my mind," Scar replies sarcastically. If it weren't for the little runt, Scar believes, he would be first in line for King. Then, Scar rudely walks away. "Don't turn your back on me !" Mufasa shouts. |
Many months pass. Mufasa and Simba look out over the Pride Lands. "Simba, look," Mufasa tells his son, "everything the light touches is our kingdom." Simba is amazed. Mufasa continues. "A kings time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king." |
While Mufasa goes to ward off hyenas from the Pride Lands, Simba tells his uncle Scar he's going to rule the kingdom one day. Filled with jealousy, Scar hatches his evil plan. He tells Simba about the forbidden elephant graveyard, warning him not to go there, yet knowing Simba's curiosity will lead him straight to that perilous graveyard. |

Nala's mother Sarafina gives her lioness cub a bath. "Hey, Nala," Simba says trotting in. He tells her about a scary new place- the elephant graveyard. So, pretending to head for the waterhole, the two approach the eerie graveyard, while Zazu hovers above, "cubsitting." Simba and Nala try to ditch the dodo! |
