You Can't Hide...

Nala sat awake one night, uneasy. She was pleased to see that her pride had
was now at peace with the Outsiders, but something still troubled her. Kovu
had earlier assured Simba that while he was Zira's son, his father was
someone else. But who?

Unable to push the question out of her mind, she stood up, and padded to
where Kovu was sleeping, nestled closely to his mate, Kiara. She smiled at
them, knowing that when the time came, they would produce fine heirs to the
throne. She just looked at them for a while, but finally, she nudged Kovu
awake with her paw, "Kovu! Kovu!" she whispered.

Kovu's eyes were shut but he muttered, "Mmmm, Kiara…I'll get closer if you
want more love…" His eyes flickered open as he gazed at the face of Nala.
He gasped, "Nala, Your Highness, ug, I'm so sorry!"

"It's all right," Nala smiled, "I just have something to ask you."

Kovu blinked and stood up, "But it's dark still."

"Yes, I know, but I couldn't sleep," she responded. "Come on. Let's go to
the front of Pride Rock. I don't want to wake anyone." Kovu blinked, and
followed her out.

They sat down beneath the stars, and Nala began, "You assured Simba and I
that if Kiara were to marry you, it wouldn't be inbreeding because you
aren't really Scar's son." Kovu nodded slowly, and Nala continued, "Who is
your father? And if it wasn't Scar, how did you become Scar's heir?"

Kovu rubbed his ears as he thought about it, "I saw him only on a few
occasions when I was a young cub, but I remember him as being well built
and dark colored. He was a former rogue whom Scar was allied with. I was
told that he had come because sought revenge for banished from Pride Rock
when he visited for only a few days at the start of Mufasa's reign, but in
the end, he only wanted lionesses.  When my mother came into heat, he took
advantage of this, angering the King. Scar ordered the hyenas kill the
rogue. Then, out of sympathy for the unborn cub, he promised that he would
give the Kingdom to it."

Nala nodded slowly, "And that unborn cub was you, right?"

Kovu nodded slowly, "Yeah."

Nala then asked, "But Kovu, that doesn't tell me anything of his name...or
do you remember it?"

Kovu pondered this and said finally, "Hawaa."

A sudden look of disgust crossed Nala's face, "KOVU! That's MY father!"

Kovu blinked, and leapt to his feet, "Whoa, really?"

Nala nodded, "Yeah, Sarafina told me that Mufasa banished because he was
caught with her." She made another disgusted face, "Blegh! I can't believe
I didn't ask you this sooner! You should be exiled again!"

Kovu smirked slightly and yawned as he padded back to the den, "You can
run, but you can't hide."
