This is an older story of mine, polished up and trimmed into shape. I also fixed one or two small oopsies in it, just in case someone still remembers the original. And now, without further ado ... "And remeber, it's our little secret!" Scar watched Simba pad up the slope leading from the ledge. "It's almost too easy", he thought, "Just visit that elephant graveyard, little fool! Curiosity killed the cat.". Scar laid down, closed his eyes and began to ponder his plan once again. It was brilliant - after Simba had been killed by the hyenas, whom he had told to watch out for little cubs trespassing into their territory, he could blame Mufasa to be responsible for the death of a member of the pride and claim him to be unable to fulfill his royal duty of defending the pride. This would give him a reason to take over the throne, exile his brother from the pride and banish him from the pridelands forever with as little blodshed as possible. That's what he liked about his plans - they were always so ... perfect. Scar suddenly felt drowsy and closed his eyes. He quickly fell into a light slumber, and images began to appear in his mind. He, his brother and the lionesses were gathered in front of Pride Rock, and he was pointing an accusing paw at Mufasa. "It is your fault your son is dead. If you had been there with me, we could have driven of the hyenas easily before they killed one of our cubs. But obviously, you were to busy to fulfill your royal duties, leaving me, your humble servant, to take care of them for you !", he began a speech in his dream, "You are a coward, unworthy of being KING !" He spat out that last word. "Your son was already more of a king than you have ever been. It is thanks to him that my daughter is still alive. He held off the hyenas long enough so I could finish them ... so at least you won't have to worry about exacting revenge on anyone. I took care of that for you." Scar felt a slight chill. Something was wrong about this dream. Something he had not planned ... He paused in his monologue, giving his brother a few seconds to recover before he continued, "You are a disgrace to this pride. Go now, and never return to these lands. Of course, since you still are my brother, I will keep the news of your shame to myself, and I'm sure the lionesses will do the same. You might still find another pride willing to accept you ..." Suddenly, he felt a chill run down his spine, and he immediately realized that this wasn't a dream. Some inner voice seemed to tell him something was wrong, so he got up, padded over to the edge of pride rock and peered down. He spotted three small shapes leaving pride rock toward the water hole ... one of them was flying, so it could only be that pesky bird, Zazu, but the other two were definitely lion cubs, which could only mean that ... Scar swallowed. Simba had taken Nala with him. This was what had been wrong about his dream. Now she was in danger, something he had been trying to avoid all the time. He had always kept her out of his struggle for power, and now Mufasa's son had dragged her in. The situation left him with few choices. If he didn't warn them, his daughter would be killed along with Simba. If he warned them, his plan would be ruined. If ... suddenly, Scar remebered what Simba had said during their recent conversation: "Well, I'm brave ..." Perhaps this offered him a possibility to save his daughter and get rid of Simba and Mufasa, and earn the respect and admiration of the other members of the pride. Yes. It was exactly like in his dream. Oh, and it was the perfect opportunity to dispose of those worthless hyenas, too. Scar left Pride Rock, telling the lionesses he would do some hunting on his own. But he headed for the elephant graveyard, taking some shortcuts only known to hime in order to get there before the two cubs did. On his way, Scar thought about Nala. He had never shown his affection to her, although he loved his daughter dearly. But there was a difference between not showing one's affection and not caring when one's daughter was about to be eaten by a bunch of hyenas. And one day, she would become a fine huntress and a worthy addition to the pride ... his pride. One day ... he knew this day would soon come. Scar listened as he arrived at the edge of the elephant graveyard, and he heard a faint scream coming from the its center. They were already there! He ran up a slope and peered down into the center of the graveyard, and immediately spotted the cubs who were already being chased by three of the hyenas. Scar recognized the trio as Shenzi, the female leader of the pack, her right hand Banzai, and that drooling idiot, Ed. They were chasing the cubs towards a cave which was a dead-end, as Scar well knew. "At least they have some brain.", he thought as he ran towards the secret back entrance to the cave, the perfect place for an ambush. Crouching low in order not to reveal his presence, Scar waited for the cubs, who arrived just a few moments after him, with the hyenas right on their heels. He moved forward a bit to have a better view at the following events ... after all, his daughter's life was depending on his well-timed intervention. Nala and Simba were trapped in the cave, and the hyenas were moving in for the kill. Nala tried to hide behind Simba, who stepped forward and growled at the approaching trio. Scar had to suppress a chuckle at this futile gesture, "Yes, be a nice lad and show me how brave you really are !", he whispered to himself. He flexed his muscles and prepared to pounce on the hyenas just an instant after they had killed Simba. The excitement about the upcoming fight already rushing through his body, he could nearly feel their puny necks break between his jaws ... although he wasn't as strong as his brother, those three poachers would be no match for him. Just one more moment ... Simba tried to growl again, but instead of a cute mrrowl a massive roar resounded from the cave's walls. Scar crouched back into the shadows as Mufasa came running into the cave. His brother quickly overwhelmed the three hyenas and, after telling them to keep their paws of his son, let them escape. The hyenas scrambled out of the cave in terror, and Mufasa, Zazu and the cubs left soon after. Scar stood on the ledge, alone, and was still looking down into the cave. His plan had failed, and his brother, the weak-hearted fool, had even let the hyenas live, and action completely unacceptable and unworthy of a true king. But next time, he would take more drastical measures to ensure his success. Next time, there would be no escape for Mufasa and his son.
