All Dogs Go To Heaven is a classic non-Disney animated film.
Created by one of Disney's former animators, Don Bluth, All Dogs Go To Heaven is prone to have some
Disney traits, character designs being very similar to those of Disney's Robin Hood and Snow White
And The Seven Dwarfs (Don Bluth was part of the animation crew in both of these). However, All Dogs
Go To Heaven is a far cry from the classic Disney fairy tales.
Taking place in the latter years of the Great Depression, the year of 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana,
the film tends to have a dreary atmosphere in most scenes, adding to the feel of conspiracy in the plot.
The first scene opens up with Itchy Itchiford busting his best friend, Charlie B. Barkin, out of the pound
where the German Shepherd is unjustly on death row. The breakout attempt is successful and the two return
to a canine casino known as "Carface and Charlie's Place".
As the plot unfolds, we get the idea that there is tension between the two business partners, Carface and Charlie.
Carface, a cigar-puffing, greedy pit bull wants the profits of the business all to himself, but in order to do this,
he must first get rid of his partner, Charlie. His first attempt of framing Charlie and putting him on death row was
obviously unsuccessful, so he must try a new approach.
He convinces Charlie to leave and start his own business and sets up a big farewell bash for his partner. The gang gets
Charlie reeling drunk and blindfold him on the water end of a pier. At the other end, Carface releases the brakes on an old
car and sends it flying down the pier to hit Charlie and kill him. This attempt works and Charlie gets a one-way ticket to Heaven...
or so we think.
Once in Heaven, Charlie meets the head angel, a pink whippet who later becomes known as Anabelle. Upon learning that a watch
represents his life, Charlie gets his paws on the heavenly timepiece and winds it, sending himself back to earth where he reunites
with Itchy and proceeds to plot revenge against the double-crossing Carface. First, Charlie learns the secret of Carface's success
which goes on even without Charlie, the brains of the outfit. The pit bull has a human girl with a gift to talk to animals. Charlie
sees opportunity.
He and Itchy kidnap the little girl, whose name is Anne-Marie, promising to find her a mommy and daddy (as she's an orphan) and they take her to live in the junkyard. With the help of the gifted
young human, Charlie is able to get his own business going, but word leaks out that Charlie's alive and Carface finds out about it.
Determined to finish Charlie once and for all and take back his golden goose, Carface attempts to shoot Charlie down with his sidekick,
Killer, and a "Flash Gordon Thermo Atomic Ray Gun". Again, Charlie makes a narrow escape...only to run into a pack of rats who intend to
sacrifice him and Anne-Marie to an enormous alligator known as the King Gator.
Charlie's "singing" saves him from being the alligator's next meal and the two become friends, but Anne-Marie's health is declining and Charlie knows
he must get help for her. He takes her to an abandoned church where his friend, a Collie named Flo, studies the situation, telling Charlie that he must get her
to a doctor. While this is happening, Carface has launched an all-out attack on Charlie's casino, burning it to the ground and leaving a battered Itchy behind.
Itchy tells Charlie what's happened and that they need to get rid of Anne-Marie. Charlie then blows up and tells him that they will "dump her in an orphanage".
Anne-Marie hears it all and flees, only to be captured by Carface.
Charlie, who has become deeply attached to the little girl, rushes to Carface's place to rescue her, but Carface and his thugs are waiting for him. They capture
Charlie and tie him to an anchor, lowering him into the bayou to drown, but the King Gator charges in to Charlie's rescue, biting the ropes that bind him so he
can get out alive. Charlie and Carface then fight with each other and in the end, Carface falls into the bayou, where the King Gator sizes him up as the main course
and we get the idea of what happens to the pit bull.
Charlie then leaps to save Anne-Marie from drowning, but he has to make a choice as his watch falls into the water as well. He choses to save Anne-Marie, but in saving her
he loses his own life. Anne-Marie ends up being taken in by a couple whom she'd become friends with earlier in the film, finally finding her very own family and Charlie
returns to Heaven. Carface is there as well, but he pulls a "Charlie", grabbing his own life watch and winding it, declaring he'll get revenge on the King Gator if it's the last
thing he does.
Okay, there's the plot synopsis in my own words. If ya haven't already seen the movie, buy it or rent it somewhere! It's a great film for children and adults alike!
