Kovu is Zira's son. We first meet Kovu when Kiara runs away from her babysitters, and ends up in the outlands, where she bump into him. After escaping from the crocodilles in the river, they starts to get along, until Simba shows up, together with some of his lionesses. Spotting Simba, Zira steps out from the tall grass where she have been hiding. After a short talk, she picks up Kovu and returns to the Outlands.

Kovu next enters the screen when he is fully grown, as a part of Zira's plan of getting rid of Simba. His brother and sister, Nuka and Vitani, starts a fire where Kiara is hunting, and Kovu rescues her from the fire, so that he could look like a good guy in the Pridelanders' eyes. When he brings Kiara back into the Pridelands, they are met by Simba. Simba is hostile until Rafiki tells him that he saved Kiara's life. Kovu claims he has left the Outsiders and are now a rogue, and he asks to join Simba's pride. Simba agrees to this, unkwoing of Kovu's intentions of killing him.

Kovu agrees to help Kiara train to be a better hunter. During their training, they run into Timon and Pumbaa and play around a little, chasing birds. They end up in a small cave, hiding from a bunch of rhinos. When they are exiting the cave, they end up kissing each other, and they quickly fall in love.

The next morning, Simba takes Kovu for a walk, talking about Scar. Suddently, they are ambushed by Zira and the rest of the Outlanders. She tells Simba that this was a part of her and Kovu's plan, making Simba believe Kovu was in on this. Simba manages to escape, but Nuka is killed during the chase. Zira blaims Kovu for this. When Kovu returns to Pride Rock he is exiled by Simba. Kiara, who dissaproves of the exile and believes in Kovu's innocense, runs away from Pride Rock and finds Kovu out there. Kovu wants to run away with her, but she makes him come back with her, to stop the fighting between the prides. They return in the middle of the big fight. They manages to stop the fight, but Zira ends up dead. He the returns to the Pridelands, where he somaday will rule as a king, together with his love, Kiara.
