- 4'33"--John Cage
- This piece was written to challenge the definition of what is music. Cage discovered that even in a sound tight chamber there are noises, that is, at no time is there ever silence. He wrote the piece in three movements (0:30; 2:23; 1:40), each entitled after the amount of time they take up. In the first performance a pianist sat at his piano with the sheet music and a stopwatch and played nothing. In fact, the lid to the keyboard was down during each movement and to signify the end of the movement he opened the lid and then closed it again to begin the next one.
- 0'00"--John Cage
- Also known as 4'33" no.2, 0'00" was to give the performer total freedom of what to do onstage with the exception of playing a musical instrument. When Cage performed it himself he walked on stage, put some fruits and vegetables in a blender, turned the blender on, drank the juice he created, and walked off stage.
