The Unofficial Lion King Character Encyclopedia October 1996 Edition by David Morris Additional material provided by Joe McCauley Microsoft Word version converted by Marcis Buhholcs HTML version coded by Matt Polak With the torrent of TLK stories and fan fiction out, trying to keep track of who's who can be pretty confusing. This document is mainly intended to help fan-fiction writers, but is pretty informative in of itself. The encyclopedia is in the following format: 1)ALPHABETICAL CHARACTER LISTING Character Name: Description: SOURCE: Author or Creator(This is the original creator of the character. Subsequent personality or plotline changes to the character by other authors are dealt with in the description.) REFERENCES: Abbreviated title(s) of stories in which this character appears. 2)APPENDIX A: An index of story sources, and the abbreviation codes used in the character references. 3)APPENDIX B By Joe McCauley. It contains an extensive list of character conflicts as well as open ended questions pertaining to some of the characters. This is a *very* valuable resource, and I suggest that any TLK fiction writers should examine it carefully (or else your story may show up here in the next revision!). 4)APPENDIX C: AUTHORS INDEX A listing of TLK fiction authors, with an accompanying list of their works. Wanna know what John Q. Author wrote about Simba? Well, here it is! 5)APPENDIX D: Open for future usage. 6)APPENDIX E: EDITION NOTES Several stories have undergone revision in the past; major changes to said stories are covered here. I've tried to make this work as accurate as possible, and will continue to update it monthly as new info becomes available. If I've made any errors as to the spelling of names or character sources, or if your story has not been included, PLEASE e-mail me: < damorris@wilmington.net > and I will correct the problem ASAP. Due to the incredible volume of material available, this is to be expected. Legal Issues "The Lion King" is copyright 1994 by Walt Disney Corp. I must take time here to thank the following people, whose help and feedback have been invaluable: Joe McCauley, for some very good suggestions on general layout of the list, as well as Appendices B & E. Joe has been a tremendous help in keeping the list up to date, and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Many improvements you see here from v 1.0-1.3, such as the references and the resource list were his idea, and they've contributed immensely to the overall work. Joe, I thank you *very* much! Sam Simpson for his valuable comments and suggestions, and for numerous Swahili translations. David Cleary for his helpful comments and suggestions. Joshua Templin for helping to answer many questions about his characters. Christine Morgan for help in tracking down the elusive creators of several characters. Jennifer Sarantites for helping track down still others. Brian Tiemann for enduring numerous questions about his characters, and for providing the Swahili translations available in his Lion King FAQ list. John Burkitt for joining me in the process of adding a few new names to the list. I can only scratch the surface with this little note, but John, you know how I feel. Thank you. Marcis Buhholcs for the Microsoft Word version of the Encyclopedia. He spent a lot of time and effort turning the text version into a first class Word document, and I must express my deepest thanks. Matt Robinson for first suggesting the encyclopedia be put into HTML format. Matt Polak for giving me the kick in the butt to make it happen. And finally, each and every person who has sat down and taken the time to give a little more magic to the Lion King story. Busa ngo xolo, busa ngo thando. Rule with peace, rule with love. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SPOILER WARNING!!!! The following character descriptions contain detailed information about characters in the Lion King genre, including the motion picture and stories written by individual authors. Reading them may reveal information about the character which could hamper enjoyment of the individual plots of the related stories. Browse with care! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- AHADI: Adult lion. Former Lion King of the Pridelands and father of Mufasa and Taka/Scar. Ahadi appears to be much like Mufasa in his general attitude towards life, although he is more reserved in his inter- actions with others. Ahadi is very similar in appearance to Mufasa as well, although not as large or well built. Deceased at time of motion picture. SOURCE: Walt Disney Corp. REFERENCES: TLKSNA,TP,AMOP,WOTP,COTPL AIHEU THE BEAUTIFUL: Leonine name for God. Aiheu is responsible for endowing living things with "the breath of life." A "mantlement" ceremony is held by the Lion King when an adolescent lion shows the first signs of his mane, for the animals believe that the appearance of a lion's mane is a sign of Aiheu's favor. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL AJENTI: Adult lioness of Simba's pride. Daughter of Yolanda, she is mother to Misha. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL AKASE: Adult lioness. Mate to Ahadi and Mother of Mufasa and Taka/Scar, Akase is a devoted mother to her two sons. She is concerned for her younger son, Taka, and is the only member of the pride he will openly discuss his feelings with. SOURCE: Brian Tiemann REFERENCES: TP,COTPL AKUTI: Female tiger and mate of Shere Khan. Mother of Rishi. SOURCE: Sam Simpson REFERENCES: S ALBA: Adult lioness. This lioness's acts became legend. Babysitter of N'ga and Sufa, she was trapped inside a cave with the cubs when the entrance collapsed. As the days passed without rescue, the cubs began to starve. Alba was without children herself, and so had no milk with which to nurse the cubs. Rather than watch them starve in front of her, she opened the veins in her foreleg, nourishing the cubs with her body's own blood until they were rescued. This brave and selfless act cost Alba her life, and in her memory, the little red flower that first sprang up where her body lay has been named after her: Alba, "the blood of mercy." SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL ALIGI: Adult lioness. Member of Simba's pride. When Simba wreaks havoc on his mane with a TLK shaving kit, Aligi gives him a compliment (of sorts) on his new hairstyle. She's what you could call a "new age" lioness. Here, Aligi is much more serious. A superlative stalker and hunter, she is Mistress of the Hunt; the nominal leader of the hunting party while it is engaged in finding, stalking, and attacking prey. Even Sarabi and Nala defer to her in matters of the hunt. She has two sons: Togo and Kombi. SOURCE: Jason Knight REFERENCES: TLKSK, COTPL AMARAKH: Adult female hyena. At the time of Ahadi's rule, she was the Roh'mach, or leader, of the hyena clan in the elephant graveyard. Her laxness in resolving the punishment of the killers of Avina resulted in the ban forbidding hyenas from hunting in the Pridelands. Amarakh has a daughter, Takyla. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL AVINA: Adult lioness. Mate of Shaka, and mother of Sarabi and Elanna. Avina was singularly skilled in lone hunting; she paid the price for this when her jaw was shattered by an errant hoof. The wounded lioness was torn apart by hyenas shortly thereafter. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL BANZAI:(Swahili: skulk, lurk) Male hyena. Part of the infamous hyena trio from the motion picture, Banzai is the most volatile member of the group, quick to anger and more likely to act than think. His appearance is typical of the spotted hyena, with the exception of his bushy eyebrows, which make it easy to determine what kind of mood he's in. SOURCE: Walt Disney Corp. REFERENCES: TLK,TLKT&P,TLKSNA,TTOS,TTOT,TLKC, TAOTLK,COTPL BASHAK: Male hyena pup. Young Bashak develops a strong friendship with young Habusu, the lion cub. When Habusu is held hostage, Bashak and his mother Losara help to rescue the lion cub and return him to his mother. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL BEESA: Adult lioness. Sister to Isha and mother of Lisani, Beesa was brutally maimed and killed in a hunting accident. Her spirit returned, however, to guide Nala across the desert to her destiny. Leader of the escort that exiled Elanna from the Pridelands. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL BREE: Male hyena. Bree has a questionable singing voice. (inside joke; sorry-D.M.) SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL CHAD: Male human. Yes, human. Chad is a boy of approximately 10-12 years of age(this is my personal impression from his decription and actions, no actual age is given-D.M.). So far this is the only human to have any social contact with the characters from "The Lion King," as he has the uncanny ability to understand animal language and respond to them in kind. The story involving him is unfinished, but at this point he is living with the pride under Mufasa's sponsorship. Chronological note: In this story, Chad is still living with the pride during Simba's reign. SOURCE: Frank Calabraro REFERENCES: SITP, AC CHAKA: Male lion cub. Simba and Nala's son and heir to the Lion King throne, this is at this point the closest thing to an official Disney name for the cub we saw at the end of "The Lion King." In fan fiction, however, he is more popularly known as Tanabi. Please note that at this time this name is unconfirmed and may change again(there have been two or three other names thrown at us by Disney to keep us guessing). Believe it or not, his "official" name during storyboarding in the motion pictue was Fluffy(they had to call him *something*). Important note: it may be female! See Shani's entry below. *NOTE* Thanks to David Cleary for cross-posting the Fluffy info-D.M. SOURCE: Walt Disney Corp. REFERENCES: TREOS, OFAF CHAKULA: Adult lioness. A figure of legend, this lioness was Queen of the Pridelands, alongside her mate, Ramalah. Her two sons, N'ga and Sufa were involved in an extrordinary incident with their babysitter, Alba. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL DHORUBA: (Swahili: storm)Lioness, formerly a rogue, now a member(some- what reluctantly, but out of neccesity,) of Mufasa's pride. Dhoruba joined the pride to help insure protection for her newborn son, Mtanga. She is still very suspicious of her new pridemates, and finds their ways somewhat constricting and annoying. Still, she has thawed slightly, associating (albeit reluctantly) with the young Nyota to a degree, and allowing her son to socialize with the young prince Simba and his friend Nala. Dhoruba has problems, however. She is apparently on the run from a dark figure in her past(see Janja). SOURCE: Sam Simpson REFERENCES: TLR ED: Male hyena, and another member of the hyena trio from the motion picture. This dude is gonzo, crazy, mad as a hatter, you can pick your own euphemism, but Ed is just not all there. When pushed to a point, however, he can become quite vicious(look what happened to Scar at the end of TLK!). In this story, Ed's name is said to be derived from a human who saved his mother's life. SOURCE: Walt Disney Corp. REFERENCES: TLK,TLKT&P,TLKSNA,TTOS,TTOT,TLKC, TAOTLK,COTPL ELANNA: Adult lioness, and Sarabi's sister. Elanna fell in love with Taka during his reign as king, and was one of his few true confidants. Sadly, their son, Fabana, was miscarried and died in childbirth. Elanna was driven off by the hyenas shortly before Simba's return; her whereabouts are unknown, and she is presumed dead by the other lions. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL FABANA: Adult female hyena. Terribly scarred about her face, this one- eyed hyena makes friends with a young and disillusioned Scar. She also introduces him to her three children: Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. One of Taka's true friends, she greives sorely over his death. Ever hopeful for her wayward children, she joins them in banishment after their exile by Uhuru. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL FABANA(II): (Swahili-: swallow) Male lion cub. The son of Elanna and Scar. He was born prematurely only two months into his gestation and died in childbirth. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL FENTALI: Female lion cub. Daughter of Simba and Nala, Fentali is more of a deeper yellow, contrasting strongly with her mother's cream colored fur. Fentali loves her family dearly, but is somewhat resentful of the extra time Simba spends with her brother, Tanabi. As a result of this misunder- standing, an emotional gulf begins to open between the cub and her father. Fentali begins to evade Simba when he seeks her out, and hides in a hollow log. An accident ensues, and the log, cub inside, plummets over a waterfall into the thundery spume below. At this point, her fate is unknown. SOURCE: Walt Disney Corp. REFERENCES: TLK GRIZ'NIK: Adult male hyena. Griz'nik was unlucky enough to be on guard duty when Simba came looking for the missing Habusu. He luckily survived the incident, however. This hyena seems to have a penchant for drawing guard duty on the worst occasions.... SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL HABUSU: Male lion. Son of Isha and Mabatu. His sisters died in childhood, leaving him with few playmates, among whom were Togo, Kombi, and Lisani, his cousin. Habu also has a hyena aquaintance, Bashak, with whom he has a very close friendship. Habusu left Simba's pride to accompany his mother and father back to their own territory. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL HAZAKEN: Unknown, presumed to be a lion or lioness. SOURCE: Unknown(HELP! I have a copy of the story involving this character but no author is listed-D.M.) REFERENCES: This work was untitled when I recieved it, and I am unable to locate the author or title(whoever you are, I KNOW you're out there!) HIDZABI: Adult lion. Existing in an alternate storyline from the "Lion King" motion picture, Hidzabi is ruler of a small pride living on the edge of the Pridelands. Hidzabi has a most unique feature: he sports a braided mane(how those lionesses of his managed to do that, I've not yet figured out!). He is also possessor of a gemstone of unknown value ap- propriately titled "Hidzabi's Joy." This scheming tyrant plots with the adolescent Taka to eliminate Mufasa, thus clearing the way to the throne. SOURCE: Steven Conley REFERENCES: WOTP ISHA: Lioness of Mufasa's pride. Quiet and focused, she is a superb huntress. Here, Isha is quite different. A very outspoken lioness, she is unafraid to voice her opinion on any matter. Isha is VERY fond of the opposite sex as well; this has given her somewhat of a reputation with the other lionesses. Her relationship with the young lion Mabatu blossomed, however; she fell in love with the adolescent male and bore him three cubs; Jona, Minshasa, and Habusu. Sadly, of these only Habusu survived. Isha also adopted her niece Lisani when Isha's sister Beesa died, and has sucessfully reared her to adulthood. Isha was reunited with her mate Mabatu and left Simba's pride to join him as his queen. Only one of many who were responsible for the death of Shaka's wife, Avina, he was unfortunately caught by the enraged lion and decapitated. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL JANJA SHADOWLURKER: (Janja:- Swahili: clever rogue) Adult lion. His title is Leader of the Lion Rogues of the Southlands. Known simply as Shadowlurker to the local animals, and referred to as the King of Clawtip Peak by the lions of the Pridelands, Janja is a powerful prescence in the land. This rogue is very even tempered, but woe to those who cross him. Janja has an immense storehouse of legends, fables, and stories in his head, and these come in quite handy when he needs a favor from his friend, Kasuku. Janja has taken an obsessive interest in the whereabouts of the lioness Dhoruba, and it remains to be seen just what form of action he will take upon her. SOURCE: Sam Simpson REFERENCES: TLR JEBWEEL: Adult giraffe. Incosi (leader) of the giraffe tribes at the time of Simba's return. SOURCE: Taka Khumbartha REFERENCES: TTOTA6 KAKO: Adult lioness. Mother of Mabatu, she appeared one day seeking asylum in Taka's pride. Already pregnant, she shortly thereafter gave birth to Mabatu. Kako is a very devoted mother, and is extremely closemouthed about her past. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL KALAMKA: (Swahili: quick-witted)Male lion of legend, King of the Kube River Valley. SOURCE: Andreas Spring REFERENCES: ALIL KASUKU: (Swahili: parrot)Male parrot. This grey avian is quite the enter- tainer, passing his time by reciting the stories and legends of the animal kingdom. However, his hunger for such stories, especially new ones, has formed an odd friendship of sorts between him and the rogue lion Janja. Kasuku is willing to perform various favors for Janja, but there is always a price: there must be a story in return. SOURCE: Sam Simpson REFERENCES: TLR KHEMOKI: Adult zebra stallion. Mated to Whinnyfred, Khemoki is the Incosi, or leader, of the Zebra'ha, the zebra tribe. Khemoki is somewhat of a stuffed shirt aristocrat, though he does have an occasional weakness for throckberries. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL KH'TEL: Adult male hyena. Initially, Kh'tel is the stereotypical hyena; full of energy, but low on brains. However, this dull exterior is a deception, for a bright and compassionate individual dwells within. Kh'tel's true colors emerged when he assisted Losara in rescuing Habusu from Shenzi's coup d'tat plans. SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL KHULO: Male cheetah. Rather conservative and cautious, but he has a smart head on his shoulders. This is definitely a cheetah to watch out for. SOURCE: Brian Tiemann REFERENCES: TP KIBETI: Female lion cub. Daughter of Scar/Taka and Sikia. Too weak to sur- vive a move to new territory, she died shortly after her family arrived at their new home. She is survived by her brother, Tokeko. SOURCE: Paul Kiela REFERENCES: OFAF KICHASI: Female cheetah, and companion of Khulo. While unafraid to join in a fight, Kichasi is rather impulsive, often acting with little fore- thought as to what consequenses her actions might bring. SOURCE: Brian Tiemann REFERENCES: TP KISASIAN: (possible derivation: Swahili: Kisasi:-revenge taker)Male lion. Son of Scar and Ngwame, this is one BAD dude. Kisasian is huge, probably close to Mufasa's size. He has the general appearance of his father, with an attitude to match. And yes, he too has a vertical scar across his left eye, this one given to him in combat by Simba. Don't make the mistake of assuming this is just "Scar with muscles." Kisasian is a very complex character, with an outlook on life totally unlike that of his father. Kisasian believes in and maintains the circle of life, but he does so on his own terms.(This is one of my favorite fan fiction characters-D.M.) SOURCE: Joshua Templin REFERENCES: TTOT,S,TLKC,PAP,ALIL,PL KISHA: Female lioness and mother of Nala. Kisha is an alternate name for this lioness(her actual name is Sarafina, but this was probably unknown to the author as her name was never mentioned on film-see Sarafina's entry below-D.M.). He is reported to be Shani's boyfriend, and possibly Scar's son as well. SOURCE: Walt Disney Corp. REFERENCES: None available KRULL: Male hyena. Entrusted by Taka to guard Rafiki during his confinement, Krull is coerced by the madrill to help him. Later, however, Krull follows Rafiki willingly, and would give his life to save the shaman. Rafiki bestowed the name "Uhuru" on his hyena friend. (see Uhuru) SOURCE: John Burkitt/David Morris REFERENCES: COTPL KUBE FIREHEART: Character of animal stories and legends(i.e., Robin Hood, etc.). This is one of their greatest heroes. Legend has it that long ago he organized the lions of the central savannah to turn back a hyena invasion of their territory. This conflict apparently ended any significant threat by the hyenas, as they have never returned in large numbers again. Kube begat two sons, Raha and Mwasi. His children unfortunately caused his demise, as he gave his life to end a quarrel between them that had escalated into outright conflict. SOURCE: Sam Simpson REFERENCES: TLR KUBLIA: Male tiger. Kublia is a mysterious character. He is so old that his fur has gone pure white except for the striping typical to all tigers. He is what is called a Seeker, and is apparently charged(or cursed, depending on your viewpoint)to wander the earth helping others to fufill their places in the circle of life, as he denied his many years ago to his great regret. An old friend of Rafiki, as you might expect, he is aged, but still strong and sharp of mind, though his endurance is understandably shorter than it used to be. Lisani is in an unenviable position. She still cares for her old friends in Simba's pride, but is totally devoted to Kisasian. Should any further conflict develop between the two prides, she will unfortunately have to choose sides(she luckily managed to avoid fighting her pridemates during their first clashes, but how much longer she will remain neutral is questionable). Here, Lisani is the daughter of Beesa. Orphaned while still a cub, she is adopted by her aunt Isha. "Miss Priss," as she is affectionately known by her pridemates, left Simba's pride to join Mabatu's pride, along with her friend, Habusu. The dedicated Mheetu raised his surviving son Mwathu to adulthood, and it remains to be seen if he will attempt to exact retribution against Kisasian. SOURCE: Andreas Spring REFERENCES: ALIL, possibly TAOTLK(see note below) *NOTE* This also may be the Disney character Mee-Too, a male lion cub, who was dumped in the early planning stages of "The Lion King"(back when it was known as "King of the Jungle"). The spelling of the name is questionable, as it is spelled "Mee-Too" in "The Art of the Lion King," which is considered a canon Disney source, and "Mheetu" in "A Lioness's Legacy," written by Andreas Spring. If this is simply the author's decision to change the spelling to an Africanized version, then credit for this character should go to Walt Disney Corp. MINSHASA: Lioness of legend. The official Disney reason was that Taka was caught in a wildebeest stampede and thus marked. However, the one most accepted by TLK fans is that it was given to him by either Mufasa or Sarabi(most likely Sarabi) to deter his advances toward her (Disney obviously does not support this view, of course). Also listed are some questions on which there is no definitive correct answer but where one or more fan fiction authors have made an assumption. (For now, answers relating to Trey McElveen's "Dreams of Precedence" contain only the statement 'Addressed by DOP' without further elaboration. These will later be changed to a more accurate description.) How did Scar get his scar? In TLKSNA, Taka is caught in a wildebeest stampede accidentally started by Mufasa. Though it comes from a canon source, most TLK fans find this explanation rather unsatisfying. In AMOP and TP, Taka tries to make advances on Sarabi and she strikes back. This seems to be the preferred explanation by most TLK fans. In BL, Taka makes a pass a Sarabi, Mufasa becomes angry and strikes him. A similar scenario is suggested in SLA, but no details are provided. In COTPL, he is attacked by a honey badger. TLR mentions a brutal encounter between Taka and Mauti Bloodpaw, but there is no specific indication that the scar resulted from this. Who is Ahadi's queen and Mufasa and Taka's mother? In TP, COTPL and TS, her name is Akase In WOTP, her name is Sanafia In TLKSNA, her name is Uru Sarafina is in a unique position. She's introduced in TLK, speaks one line and can be recognized visually in about three other scenes, but has little character development. Not surprisingly a number of fan fiction authors have used her in their stories, but with so little from TLK to go on, her character has been expanded upon in different ways. In TP, she is best friends with Wamase with whom she had a schoolgirl friendship while growing up, but has difficulty understanding Wamase's attraction to Taka. Addressed by DOP In WOTP, she and Sarabi are sisters. In TTOTA6, she and Mufasa became affectionate while Sarabi and Taka became similarly attached, until Ahadi declared that Sarabi would be Mufasa's mate. In SD, she mates with Taka because she wants a cub, and later spurns him In SITP, she is (incorrectly) named Kisha. How the pride came to Pride Rock - canon sources and most fan fiction support the idea that the pride has lived at Pride Rock at least since before Ahadi's reign. In BL, Mufasa and Taka left their father's pride, located elsewhere, came to Pride Rock, and overthrew Torna, the previous ruler (this scenario is similar to what happens among real lions and is probably what the author had in mind). TLK strongly suggests that Scar was killed by the hyenas at the end. RD, TTOTA6, TS/TT and at least one crossover fanfic not covered in this list explore the possibility that he survived. As far as we know from the movie, Simba had no brothers or sisters (at least with Sarabi; there is room for speculation about Mufasa's paternity of other cubs in the pride). In COTPL, he has a sister and littermate Shanni, who died in infancy Who is Nala's father? In AMOP, it's Mufasa In DOP, it's a rogue named Azrel In SD, it's Scar/Taka It has also been suggested in dicsussions that it may have been Ahadi, but to my knowledge this possibility has not been explored in fan fiction When Simba and Nala were cubs, were there any other cubs in the pride? In TLK in the scene where Simba steps through the sleeping pride before waking up his parents, two other cubs can be seen. Nala is one of them; the other also appears to be female and may be older. During development of TLK, early versions had at least one other cub, Mee-Too TLR has Mtanga TLW has Mlagwame SITP has Itashi and Tinbo COTPL has Lisani; Mabatu was also born shortly after Scar became king while Nala was still a cub TLKSNA also mentions other cubs See also the next question Did Nala have any brothers or sisters? In ALIL, Mheetu is Nala's brother Did Scar/Taka ever have a mate or any children? In TTOT, he mates with Ngwame and she bears Kisasian (in TTOTA6, she also bears another son, Justinian) In RD, he mates with Sikia and she bears Tokeko and Kibeti In COTPL, he mates with Elanna and she bears Fabana, who dies at birth It has also been suggested that Scar might be Nala's father (see above under "Who is Nala's father?"). Disney may give us the answer in "Simba's Pride", which will reportedly include a relationship between Scar's son Kovu and Simba and Nala's daughter Shani. To whom is Simba and Nala's cub betrothed? In RD, Tanabi is betrothed to Wazi In COTPL, Tanabi is betrothed to Misha See also the note about "Simba's Pride" in the previous question. Did Simba and Nala have other cubs besides the one presented at the end of the movie? In TLK2, they have two cubs, Tanabi and Fentali Are Mufasa and Taka littermates, or is Mufasa older by at least one reproductive cycle? In AMOP and COTPL, they're littermates. Are Shenzi, Banzai and Ed related? Is Shenzi the mate of one of the other two? In TSF, all three are siblings/littermates. APPENDIX E: EDITION NOTES Written by Joe McCauley "Chronicles of the Pride Lands" originated as six short stories by John Burkitt, "The Prediction", "The Shadow Falls", "The Child From the Stars", "A Death in the Pride Lands", "Rites of Passage" and "The Council". These were then incorporated into the first edition of COTPL, which had John Burkitt as its sole author. Later, a much expanded edition of COTPL was released with David Morris as co-author. This edition no longer included the text that originally comprised "Child From the Stars" and "The Council". [Elements of these two may reappear in a forthcoming work, "The Siprit Quest"] The first two chapters of "The Redemption" were originally titled "Of Fathers and Faith" and were written by Paul Kiela. He discontinued work on the story, which was later taken up by Ian Layton. Ian retitled it "The Redemption", made some minor changes to the first two chapters (including changing Chaka's name to Tanabi and making it fit into the same timeline as "The Tales of Tanabi"), and wrote additional chapters to complete the story. Robert Tuffley, author of "The Longest Walk", once wrote an adult version of this story. He later lost it in a hard drive crash, and we do not know of any copies still in existance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ David A.
