Balto: The Puisance
by Ewolfbalto
Balto Hybird lead his famed stallion, Hunter's Time down the ramp of Hunter Famr's horse trailer. Hunter had just come out of quarintine after he came down with cancer. He devolped a small tumor and Balto had it removed imdetly. After the surgey Hunter came down with the equine flu. Hunter had the flu for a month. After a quick check, Hunter was free to go back to Hunter Farm to be at stud for a few months before The Comlumbia Classic.
Balto led Hunter into his paddock and watched the stallion graze on the fresh green grass. He lefted Hunter and made his way down to the mare and filly barn. There standing in the aisle was a tall, sleek, black filly by the name of Kids Of America. Everybody called her Kid for short.
Kid was a two year old and would be running in the Kentucky Derby the fallowing spring. She had down well in the gate training but was not used to having a saddle on her back.
"She'll do well in the Derby." Balto ran his hands down the filly's neck.
"If we can break her," Emily continued to try gently rest the saddle on the filly's back. Kid half reared and pawed the air. Balto grabbed Kid's halter and brought her down.
"She's got the Black in her all right," Balto said. "I think she might even do better than him.
"Kid can do it. She has stamina, speed, and game. I just know she can beat the colts," Emily snapped back. She tighened the girth and placed the bridle on the filly. Kid bucked and kicked during this process.
"She needs to learn some manners first," Balto grabbed a whip and hit the ground with it. Kid sidesteped and calm down, but there were still whites in her eyes.
Emily snapped on her helmet and led Kid out of the barn. The black filly kicked once and awhile while she was being led to the ring. Balto stood at the sidelines and watched. Emily had mounted Kid and was walking her around the ring.
Because kid had such long legs, her stride was 5 times longer than a regular horse. She could travel much further and much faster than maybe the Great Secretairait.
Balto watch as Kid and Emily traveled around the ring. Kid was a tall, black, filly that had the looks of her sire. She didn't have a dished profile or a long tail and mane. She had something else in her, courage, for being a great, great, great, great, great, great, grandaughter of the mighty Seabiscuit, she had to have alot of courage.
Balto shifted his gaze to a bay mare in the paddock next to the ring. The mare had an ewe neck and a sway back. She grazed peacfully without looking into the ring. This mare was the dam of Kid. If they saw Kid, then they would hardly believe that the old nag in the pasture was her dam. Her name was No Secrets. She was a racing filly that had never won a race, like her dam, Tide's Reach. No Secrets had only produce nonwinners when bred to. She was great grandaughter of Secretairait, and a ansector of Seabiscuit.
Balto shifted his gaze once again to the paddocks beyond where No Secrets grazed. He saw mares with foals by their sides. A breeze lifted his dark brown hair. Life was so perfect here in the summer. Balto walked down to a pasture that had a large tree in it. This was where Hunter had first been turned out into. He layed down under the tree and just gazed up at the leaves and branch swaying in the warm June winds. It was late June and that meant that school was over for Emily and Elena and that meant less relaxing time for Balto. Elena Blackburn was Emily best friend and Emily's most trustful friend. Emily always told her secrets since she tursted Elena more than Balto or any other friend.
Balto closed his eyes and flew into a gentle sleep. He liked a good nap once and a awhile.
After a few hours, Balto awoke and found the sky to be a redish color. He stood up and walked down to the farm house. He walked into the kitchen to see Emily and Elena cooking something.
"Elena, we need two dry cups of parmasean cheese, a dry cup of garlic, a two dashes of peprica and ten slices of bread," Emily spoke while reading a piece of paper. Elena measured the right amounted and put them each into their own little custard cup.
"What are you two making," Balto asked as Elena measured.
"Parmasean bread sticks," Elena said. "We having homemade chicken alfredo pizza. With just a tiny pinch of ground up spinach to add taste."
"Sounds good," Balto said. He shrugged and walked off into the family room. He jumped onto the couch and turned on the tv. He watched for a little while when he heard the front door open and heard footsteps. He sat up and saw Jenna walking into the kitchen.
"Hey Jenna, Can you pass me the ground up Spinach?" Emily said. Jenna passed her a bowl of ground up spinach without saying a word.
"Jenna, you seem down, this morning you barely even talked to us. What's on your mind?" Emily asked.
"Nothing, just nothing," Jenna said sternly in a "I don't wanna talk you ever again," kinda mood.
"Jenna, there has to be something wrong in your head. Tell us," Elena said. Jenna didn't reply. Jenna walked into the dining room. Balto got off of the couch and fallowed her.
"Jenna what's wrong," Balto asked Jenna in a low voice.
"I've heard rumors that Hunter has come down with something worse than the flu and as died. I know what has happened but they don't."
"Well they will soon."
"Dinners ready." Emily placed the food on the table while Elena put down the silverware. They four ate in silence and all four were soon out side feeding the horses and bring them outside for the night.
While Elena and Emily got picked up by there parents, Jenna was rubbing the nose of Safria. Safria was no longer a jumper. Jenna had changed to dressage. Safria was more stronger in that spot than in jumping.
Jenna walked out of the barn and into the warm night. There were no stars out and the air felt warm and thick. Jenna walked up a small hill and onto the farm house porch. She looked onto the pastures and heard the rustle of horses and sighed. SHe loved this place. She walked into the farm house. She walked into the family room and sat down on the couch.
Balto walk in a few mintutes after her. "It seems quiet now," Balto joked.
"Yes, it does," Jenna said. She stood up and started to walk upstairs. "I'm heading up for bed."
"I'm coming, too," Balto said. He walked up the stairs alongside Jenna.
Weeks passed after that and soon Balto had Hunter under training. The two would be entering the Columbia Classic again and hoping to win this time.
Balto had Hunter tacked and was leading him to the mounting block. Balto mounted Hunter and walked him around the ring. The stallion's muscles bugled out as he walked. He was a beauty to all eyes that fell apon him. Hunter's great neck arched with a nice bend and his head was perfectly shaped it was almost like someone has sculpted him. Hunter's legs were nothing but strong. His muscles showed in the stallion's legs makeing him look bigger and stronger.
Hunter moved with such grace that his feet barely touch the ground. Hunter moved up from a walk to a trot and trotted around the ring. Balto sat still in the saddle. Balto asked Hunter to canter and the stallion responed imeditly. Balto steered Hunter to a jump and Hunter soared it with great grace. Hunter flew over the other jumps with great ease. Balto slowed Hunter to a walk and cooled him off.
"Easy boy," Balto said as he cooled him off. Balto dismounted and led Hunter into the stallion/gelding barn. Balto snapped the cross ties on Hunter's bridle and took off the dark brown saddle. Balto then took off Hunter's bridle and placed a hunter green halter on him. He gave Hunter a quick bath by hoseing him down before leading the bay stallion into his stall.
Balto heard foot steps and turned around to see Jenna leading a lean dapple gray gelding walking down the aisle.
"New gelding?" Balto asked.
"I'm starting my own bussiness of teaching rideing lessons. I bought this guy at the CA."
"Fine by me." Balto walked out of the stall and walked into the office. He sat down on the chair and looked at a few stud papers. He placed them down after scaning them for a few minutes and picked up the Equiary and read it.
A few hours later Balto heard foot steps and saw Emily leading the black filly into the barn. Balto stood up and walked into the aisle. "What are you doing?"
"Training. Kid needs to get used to being around stallions and geldings so I moved her up here."
"Fine by me." Balto walked down into the mare barn and looked into the stall of an old mare with a young colt by her side. The mares name was Spring Hollow Pada Du and the colt was the son of Statesmen's Sillhouette. The colt was nipped at Balto's finger which was in the stall. "Hey there playfull little guy." THe colt gave a little whinny and nipped at his mother's udder and started to nurse. Balto rubbed the mare's nose and walked down the aisle. He once again stopped in front of another stall but this time leaned on the half door. A bay mare with a star and two back socks looked at Balto.
"Hello there Starlight." Starlight gave a gentle whinny and nudged a small dapple gray foal from behind her. "Hey there Littly Friend." Little Friend gave a little whicker and nipped her mother's chest. The mare nipped the filly's mane and dropped her head to the ground and munched on a flake of hay.
Balto walked along the aisle once again and then came to the back pastures there were some mares and foals in the pastures but overall the were quiet empty. Balto stared out into the distance of acres and arces of grazeing land. Hunter noticed a black figure going very fast along the edge of the pasture. The black figure came up to the fence and turned with a flash. Balto now relized that it was Emily rideing Kid with a saddle or bridle. The two were like one when together.
Balto looked from his gaze to the barn. He walked into it and walked down the aisle once again. He walked into the indoor ring and stared into it. After awhile he walked up and into the farm house.
A few weeks later Baltp was packing up the things he would need in order to bring to the Columbia Classic. He was heading out to the show grounds tomorrow and would be back that night. Or so he thought.
The next morning he was out to the Columbia Comunity College which was where the show was. Balto lead Hunter around before the stallion was tacked and warmed up. Balto soon tacked Hunter with a light brown saddle and a light brown bridle. Balto was wearing a red jacket with a US flag on it. Balto put on his velvet helmet on and mounted Hunter.
Hunter walked forward and picked up thr trot when he felt his rider's legs press againest him. Balto trotted him around. His eyes scanned the show grounds.
After trotting Hunter around for about twenty minutes, Balto turned Hunter towards the entrance of the ring. Hunter halted and Balto waited for his name to be called.
Finally his name was called and Hunter trotted into the ring. Balto asked Hunter for the canter and Hunter responed. The two aimed for the first jump. The cleared it and went onto the next one. That one was cleared and so were the rest. He appoached the last jump.
Hunter leaped into the air. He soared over the jump and landed prefectly. But his front right hoof landed in a hole. Hunter stumbled and fell to the ground. Balto had no time to jump off of Hunter's back. Hunter rolled on top of him and everything went black.
People gasped as they watched the fall. Hunter was on his feet and was limping but Balto lay still on the ground. Jenna rushed out onto Balto and knealed beside him. An amblulance rushed onto the scene and Balto was soon carried to the hosspital. Jenna had rode with him in the amblulance but Emily was at Hunter's side feeling the stallion's injured leg.
A vert came up beside her and also felt his leg. "It's a small spraine in his cannon bone. I can have his leg mended in no time but he'll have to be rested for a week at least. Then he can be ridden and let loose in he pasture." The vet gave Hunter a shot in his neck and within minutes the stallion was on his side unconious. The vet started to operate on Hunter's leg.
"Wouldn't it be better to do it at the sugrey?" Emily asked as she stroked Hunter's head.
"Better to do it hear than later. The leg would get worse and then he might have to be put down," the vet stiched Hunter's legs up and wrapped a bandage along the cut. "He'll be up soon. I'll come around next week to take off the bandage. The stiches will have stay on until Chirstmas. Until then he'll have to wear a boot or a wrap around his leg. Got it."
"OKay," Emily said as she stroked Hunter's neck. Many thoughts ran threw her head. What happened to Balto? Who will rider Hunter in the Pussiance? When will I get home? Why do I have to be here. Why couldn't I have stayed home? When will I get my own farm? Emily just sat there.
Jenna paced in the waiting room of the hospital. She knew that Balto had imeditly gone into sugrey right after he arrived at the hospital. Jenna finally sat down on a chair and had her thoughts go another way. Who will rider Hunter in the Pussiance? She was about to cry when a doctor came into the room and sat down beside.
"I have news on your husband. Both of his legs are broken very badly, His collar bone broke, his arms are broken, and he is now in a coma. We are not sure if he will wake or not. If you want to stay you can."
"I'll head home. Can I see him first?" Jenna said.
"Yes." The doctor showed her the room Balto was in and left her to see him alone.
Jenna walked slowly up to Balto's bed. Balto lay motionless except for his breathing. Jenna ran her hand down his cheek and then kissed his forehead. She then walked out the room without speaking. She walked onto the road and walked back onto the show grounds. She saw a small crowd gathered around a large brown and black lump. The lumps was moving and slowly krept to it's feet. Jenna reconized the lump as Hunter and the person holding the reins Emily.
Emily saw Jenna and said, "What's Balto's condition?"
"He has broken his legs, arm, and collarbone, and he is in a coma right now."
"Well at least Hunter is okay." She slowly walked Hunter around. Hunter limped on his bandaged leg. "He should be better by next week."
"Well lets just get home," Jenna said as they loaded Hunter into the trailer all tacked up.
"Shouldn't we untack him," Emily asked. Jenna only shook her head and Emily led Hunter into the trailer. Emiyl stayed in the back with Hunter until they reached the farm. They led Hunter out and removed his tack. Emily led Hunter into his stall and gave him a scoop of pellets. Most of the work was done silently since both were woried about Balto.
Elena came walking down the aisle to see Emily and Jenna doing their chores silently and not even saying a word. "Why is it so quiet?"
"Balto had an accident," Emily said sadly. "He's in a coma right now." Nothing more was said after that.
The next day it was the same routine. They all were silent except for a few words.
"We have to decide who will rider Hunter in the Pussiance," Jenna said.
"I can't, and niether can you Jenna," Elena said. "That means Emily will have to."
Emily's face went white. "No way. I will not ride up againest all thoose other riders. They're alot better than me. I could never be as good as them."
"How about you get lessons with Margie Engle. I'm sure she'll help I got a call from her last night saying how sorry she was of Balto and wishing that he would awake from his coma soon," Jenna said.
"If only my grandfather was here," Emily said. "He'd help me."
"How," Jenna asked.
"I don't know," Emily said. "I'm too nevreous."
"The who will ride Hunter," Jenna asked again.
"Fine, I'll ride him, but that means I get a high check if we win the Derby."
"You'll get all the money," Jenna said.
"Sweet," Emily said.
"So then lets get back to work."
The three went back to work and no more was said.
After a week Hunter's cast was removed and Emily was rideing him to know how she should direct him.
Emily mounted Hunter about a week before the Pussiance. She pressed her legs againest Hunter's sides and he moved foward into a canter. His legs moved with her as he rounded the turn and soared over a low jump. He finished of the combo with unerring condifence. EMily slowed HUnter down to a trot.
She pressed her right leg againest his side and HUnter responed by doing a half pass from A to C. Emily then slowed him down to a walk and walked him out of the ring. She aimed him for the back woods and went of the trail. She looked up at the red leaves and sighed.
"Hey Hunter, I bet you miss good old Balto now do you," Emily said. Hutner gave a snort in reply.
"Well it;s just you and me for now," Emily said. "Jenna can't ride you since she's doing dressage and you're a jumper. After the Puissance you and I are going to a stable down south in Virgina. The place is called Pine Hallow. They have an indoor, lots of paddocks, some nice trails, and a nice trainer, too. You and I will be taking lesson there with Max Regney. He owns the place. He owns most of the horses their, too. They also have some mares for you." HUnter snort and whickered.
"The place is in Willow Creek," EMily said. "I hear that they have a multimillionarie their. I don't think I'll like them though. Sicne I have been living the surburban person all my life." Hunter snorted.
"Are you saying that I'm too generous," Emily laughed. "Bill Gates is alot more gernrous than me. Did you know that he gave 25 million dollars to India? And that he is going to be named a Knight by Queen Elizbeth of England for his gernousity? You must not know that. Horses don't really hear all the news now do they." Hunter gave a whicker.
"Fine," Emily said. "I'm not talking to anymore." After that she was silent. Hunter walked on quietly withour makeing a sound.
The next day Jenna and Emily went to the hospital to see Balto. He still hadn't awaken from his coma and the two were anixous to have him be awake. Emily sat in a chiar and was fast asleep. Jenna sat on Balto's bed and looked down onto his face. How confident it was before he fell! A tear ran down Jenna's face. Emily snores were silent to Jenna. For her mind was not hearing them. She closed her eyes and imagine the fall. The gasp from the crowd, the sound of the amblulance, and the drak figure laying still on the ground.
"Jenna," Emily said sleeply. "Is he awake yet?"
"Good morning," Jenna said. "No. He isn't."
"Excuse me but is it okay if I come in," a voice said. Jenna looked up to see a woman with gray blonde hair.
"Come in Dixie," Jenna said. "I'd rather like that."
"I'm sorry about Balto," Dixie said. "IS their anyhting I can do?"
"Just seing you hear is all that I need," Jenna said. Dixie put her arm around Jenna and comforted Jenna.
"Huh what, who's dead," Emily said.
"No one," Jenna said.
"Are you sure?" Emily said. "Hello, what's up, good bye." EMily walked out of the room.
Jenna and Dixie laughed at EMily's remarks. "And having her around make me laugh."
Jenna came home that night to find Emily on the computer IMing her friends.
"You online again," Jenna said.
"Yep," EMily said.
"Who is it this time?" Jenna asked.
"Kelsy," EMily said. "You remember her. Gail's daughter."
"Yes, I do," Jenna said.
"Hey Pat's online," Emily said. "Pat is my cusion from New York."
"OKay," Jenna said. "Which saddle are you going to use?" Jenna ran her hand on a liight bronw jumping saddle. She then looked at a dark brown all purpose saddle next to it.
"My saddle," Emily said. "It'll be easier to have a dressage like move."
"I see," Jenna said as she looked more closely at the all purpose saddle. On the back on a gold plauge it said "Emily Long". Emily had gotten it for Chirstmas two years ago.
Emily looked over at Jenna. "What saddle are you going to use?"
"I'm not rideing," Jenna said.
"I know," Emily joked.
"Tomorrow we have to clean out the trailer, oil the saddle, polish your boots, clean the bridle, the saddle pad is in the washer right now, and we have to groom Hunter.
"Yeah, and I have school," EMily said.'
"You can miss it right," Jenna said.
"Wrong," EMily said. "Quaterly assment for English are tomorrow."
"You mom and I can pick you up after English," Jenna said. "What period is it?"
"First, Block one," Emily said. "Just as the first year." Emily yawned and streched.
"That's early," Jenna said. "We'll pick you up right after the bell rings."
The lonley ding, ding, ding from the bell at Bonnie Branch Middle School sounded. Eighth graders pilled up in the halls as the bell rang.
"Emily Long to Student Services, EMily Long to Student Services."
Emily heard the announcment right after she left her English teacher's classroom. Emily walked down that hall and made her way up stairs. She walked into the room that was labled "Student Services". Their she saw Jenna and her mother waiting for her.
"Can we get outta here now? I don't wanna sit here all day!" The three got into Emily's Suburban and rove to the farm.
While Emily was taking care of Hunter and cleaning the tack. Jenna was cleaning the trailer while Emily's mom was helping Jenna do some chores.
Emily was braiding Hunter's mane when Elena walked into the barn.
"Hey Emily," she said.
"Hey Elena."
"What'cha doing?"
"Braiding Hunter's mane."
"Okay, I'll go off and groom Yasmine."
"OKay." EMily continued her grooming.
HUnter was loaded into the trailer and was drivin to Washington. HUnter was placed into his stall and was eating quietly when Emily heard a familar voice.
"Fine fellow now isn't he."
Emily turned around to see Margie Goldsteign Engle walking over towards her. "Yes he is. Thanks."
"I'm really sorry about what happened to Balto. BUt accidents happen. I've fallen alot."
"Yes but not as bad as being in a coma."
"I have to agree with that."
"Hopefully the same thing would happen to me."
"You'll fall once and awhile. But during the course walk over you can search the footing for any holes."
"Yes, that sounds like a good idea."
"BUt don't you worry about a thing. With a horse like that. He'll jump high that the moon."
Emily gave a little chuckle. "Maybe even high that Mars."
"Maybe not as high as Mars."
"You're right on that." Emily smiled and rubbed Hunter's neck.
"Well good luck to you."
"Good luck."
Margie walked off and Emily was once again alone with Hunter.
"So, what do you think?" Emily walked into the stall and patted his neck.
Hutner snorted.
"You think I'm stupid. Come on you can better than that."
Hunter nieghed.
"You're the dumb one. You don't even know what pie is."
Hunter whinnyed.
"That is not pie you dope." Hunter snorted and tossed his head.
"Are you threatning me?" HUnter tossed his head.
"Fine, if that's the way you want it then so be it." Emily walked out of the stall and sat down on the mounting block.
"I wish I wasn't so neverous." Emily looked around the makshift stalls worriedly.
The days passed that week and it was Friday morning. All the Puissance competiors moved their horses to inside the MCI Center that morning. Emily was rebraiding Hunter's mane and tail when Marige walked into the stall.
"You feeling okay."
"Just very neverous."
"I'm sure alot of riders are. BUt don't get too neverous, then he'll get all jumpy and he'll refuse for you."
"Yes, he may do that. I'll try to relax. *It worked once when I was riding bareback and I was so scared, once I relaxed the horse slowed down.*"
"Good luck tonight."
"You too."
Emily looked continued her work on HUnter. She then cleaned her saddle and cleaned Hunter's bridle.
It was soon night and the competiors were walking the course. Emily looked up at the stands to see people already sitting down. Emily then looked at the large brick wall before her. She walked around the the side where she would be landing a searched for any holes. She found none. She htne walked over towards the other jump and searched for any holes the landing spot. She found none. She then measured Hunter's strides and walked the course. After that she walked into the stables.
Emily dressed into a white blouse, with a dark green jacket over top. She then had breeches with tall black boots. She had a helmet with a velvet cover. She had a red crop in her hand. Emily led Hunter around to warm him up for the show.
"Hey Hunter," Emily said. "You think that we'll win."
HUnter snorted.
"I thought so."
EMily then heard her name be called to the gate. Emily mounted Hunter and walked over towards the gate to the arena.
Emily noticed Margie was riding before her. Margie was done the first round and it was Emily's turn.
Emily kicked Hunter's gentle in the barrel and Hunter trotted out of the ring.
Emily moved her outside leg back and squeezed with he inside leg. The result was Hunter's smooth canter. Emily aimed HUnter for the first jump. It was a low poled jump. Hunter leaped over it without any problems. Emily then aimed him for the big jump. It was 5 feet high and would be higher after this round. Hunter gave a leap and he cleared the jump.
Emily then slowed him down to a trot and aimed him out of the arena.
Jenna sat in the crowd watching the show. Her cell phone vibrated after Emily and Hunter trotted out of the arena. It was the doctor who had been watching Balto.
"Jenna, I have some good news and some bad news."
"Tell me the good news."
"Balto has awaken from his coma." Jena nearly was about to burst into the tears of joy. "The bad news is that he won't be able to ride for a year or more.
"I just want him to be alive. Does he know what is going on right now?"
"No. He is trying to figure out where he is right now."
"Please put the tv on the channel for the show. He needs to know what is going on."
"Yes ma'am." Jenna hung up. She waited for Emily and Hunter to come out again.
Emily played with her gloves with nervousness. Margie had just finished Her second round and now it was Emily's turn. Hunter trotted out into the arena lively. Emily looked at the brick wall and felt a lump in her throaght. She gulped and pused Hunter into the canter.
They soared over the warm up jump and aimed for the brick wall. Now 5 ft 10 in, Emily and Hunter just barely cleared the jump. Hunter slowed down to a walk.
Emily patted Hunter's neck as they went back into the stable area. She watched as the brick wall was rasied.
Margie was once again out and she had knocked down a pole on the warm up jump. There were two other riders besides Emily. They had cleared and Emily was back up again. They cleared that round and were soon on the next round.
The brick wall was now 7 ft and 2 in high. The other two riders had knocked it down but Emily hadn't gown.
Hutner trotted out into the arena. Emily took one glance at the brick wall and gulped. She aimed Hunter at the warm up jump at the canter. He soared it and was now aiming for the brick wall.
It all seemed to go in slow motion. Hunter's fore feet rose into the air and tucked under him. His hind legs tuck under his tail. Emily leaning forward in her saddle. She gasped in awe as she looked into the crowd. Hunter' fore feet had touched the soft dirt and was making sure his hind end had landed safely. HE took a stride and then stumbled, throwing Emily out of the saddle. Emily sat on the ground blinking.
Hunter stood next to her and nuzzled her shoulder. Emily looked at him and got to her feet. She was not hurt only a little surprised that She and Hunter had cleared the jump. The crowd did a standing ovation for her and Hunter. Emily mounted Hunter and patted his neck. She sat on Hunter while the track assisants took down the warm up jump. Hunter then walked out of the ring.
Emily waited for the rest of the riders to take their awards until the first place person was called Emily took a glance at the red, white, blue, and yellow first place ribbon on Hunter's bridle. Emily kicked Hunter and he galloped out into the arena for his victory gallop.
Hunter's stride showed great speed as the whizzed by the crowd. Emily slowed him down to a trot and aimed him for the brick wall. She had Hunter be paralell to it for the winner's photo. Emily held the Puissance Cup in her arms. After the photos were taken a reporter came out and held a mircophone.
"Ms. Long, how do you feel about this win and you setting the new world record?"
"All I can say is that I wish my good friend Balto Hybird was up here instead of me. He is the real winner."
"And how is that?"
"He trained this big guy." Emily patted Hunter's neck.
The Puissance was over and Balto had awaken. The next day Emily and Jenna visited Balto. Jenna sat on Balto's bed while Emily sat on a chair looking at a picture of the new saddle she had won.
"Emily stop reading that and come over here," Balto said.
"I'm looking at my new saddle."
"Well your gonna have alot of time trying to look at it at Pine Hallow. I think some girls will ask to see the trophy."
"Jenna, the trophy is not mine, and niether is the horse. The trophy always goes to the person who owns the horse."
"Very genrous," Balto said. "And the money comes to me, too. I have to pay off the bill for the operation."
"Just as long as I get half," Emily said.
"Fine, you get half," Balto said. "What are you going to use it for?"
"Boarding at Churchill Downs," Emily said. "Kid is my horse now isn't she."
"Until she stops racing," Jenna said. "Until then she belongs to Hunter Farm."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Emily said.
Balto and Jenna both laughed at this.
