A Loner
by Glacier

This story is about my life as a wolf. Let me describe myself first. My name's Glacier, and I have white/silver fur, with a bushy tail. My eyes are green, and I have a black ring around my right eye. Okay here we go:

It was December 24…Christmas Eve. The air was frosty, and crystal snowflakes fell from the sky, which was turning a deep purple. I stood calmly on a snowy hill, overlooking the town of Nome. I watched with glittering eyes as the towns people went into their houses, and turned off the lights.

Finally, after all the lights were out, I crept slowly into the town. My eyes turned yellow, and I could see through the deep darkness. I trotted silently to a small shed. A strange, musky smell came out of the cracks. I sniffed, scenting for danger. I nudged the door open with my slender muzzle, and I heard a killing growl. I leaped back, and gasped. The smell hit me, and it so strange!! I could smell wolf, yet something else…Husky! That was it! This must be some half-breed, I thought to myself.

A large form appeared, and I stepped back. The creature came into the light, and it was someone I couldn't recognize. "Hey pup, what are you doing out here?" Silence. I was trembling because of the edge in the voice. "…That smell…you're a wolf!! Get out of here wolf!"

The dog attacked me, teeth ready to strike. I dashed away, but I wasn't fast enough. The dog pounced on my back, and pinned me. "Please leave me alone!" I cried. Why should I be scared? I thought. I' ma wolf too! With a sudden burst of courage, I pushed my attacker off with my hind legs. I heard an "OOf!" As the dog hit the icy ground. I got up and growled. "Ohhh…That'll leave a mark."

The dog mumbled. "You're pretty good kid!" The dog complimented. "Those are some back feet! Ya knocked the air ootta me!" He laughed. I was deeply confused. Wasn't he just trying to kill me a few seconds ago? I was lost. The dog stepped into the moonlight for the first time, where I could get a good look at him. He had scraggly brownish-gray fur, and a ruffled tail. He smiled at me.

Then he dropped his head, and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, I uh…attacked you. I'm not too fond of the wolves." I must've looked pretty mad, because he held up his paw and said, "But you're an exception." He smiled again. "You fight good!" A moment of silence, then "The name's Balto. What's yours?"

I stopped glaring at him and said "Glacier. That's all you need to know." Then I started to walk away. I heard him following me though. "Hey!" I barked. "Just leave me alone okay? I don't need you." I continued walking.

"You a loner?" He blurted out. I stopped walking, turned to him and growled, "Yes. Now leave me alone." I started to trot away. He ran up to me and said, "Why not stay with me? I'm part wolf! You co-" I got sick of it.

"Well, isn't that nice that you're part husky. But you know what? I'm Not!! Even if I did want to stay, no one would want me, I'd be worthless, so what's the point? I'm a wolf, and that's that. And I am just fine with my rank, so you can beat it."

I rumbled with anger, and ran away. He didn't try to catch me. I ran blindly into the forest, tears stinging my eyes. Me…in a city, yeah right! Besides, why would I stay with a mutt like that? I settled down by a large pine tree, and cried. I WASN'T happy being a loner, and I wanted to live in a city with other dogs. I hadn't made it with my kind, so why not give it a shot? Thoughts filed my sleep, and the next morning, Christmas, would be a day I would never forget…
