The Wolf Inside
by Glacier
"Jenna, Jenna wake up!!" prompted Balto. He nudged her again, but she just rolled over and fell back asleep. Balto licked her face, and tried again. "Jenna! You MUST wake up! I have to show you something."
Balto wagged his tail gently, and smiled as Jenna slowly raised her body from the ground. She yawned and stretched, then looked curiously at Balto. "Oh Balto. What is it?"
"Come on." Balto whispered. He slowly trotted out of the boiler room they were in, and led his mate outside.
"Jenna," he whispered. "Look at the moon."
Jenna looked at the moon. Nothing out of the ordinary. "Balto, nothing's changed to it." Jenna mumbled sleepily.
"No, no...look." Balto said. Again Jenna looked, and saw it. Within the moon she could make out the shape of a wolf's head. The Northern Lights caused this effect.
"Balto..." she whispered. She felt a strange longing inside, something she's never felt before. Balto stepped out onto the snowy ground, closer to the woods.
"Jenna...have you ever howled?" Balto asked her.
"No, I'm not a wolf."
Balto growled. Balto smiled, and raised his muzzle. He let out a clear, eerie howl. "Try." He coaxed Jenna. "
Balto, I do-" Balto cut off her sentence with a short little howl. Jenna looked to the moon again, and felt that uncontrollable wild urge again. She could hold back no longer. She let out the most beautiful howl Balto had ever heard.
Jenna stopped, and felt stunned. "Well, I never felt that feeling before, Balto. I felt almost...Wolf."
Jenna looked to the ground, ashamed. "Jenna, don't be ashamed. We are all part wolf in a way." he nuzzled her.
Then he whispered, "You sing beautifully."
"Sing?" said Jenna. "Balto, that was a howl."
"Yes, but it was singing to our wild brothers." Jenna smiled. Balto did too. They sang for the rest of the night, the moon shining down brilliantly.
