~Prologue~
Megan grew up with inuits, her parents were from Montana & had come to help the natives. When Megan was only 6 years old, her parents died, of what no one knows. Megan lived in the inuit village until she was 13, up until that time she grew up learning Inuit & English, learning the hunting & foraging techniques, as well as making weapons & herbal medicine.
One night she saw a figure in the woods, her young curiosity drew her to follow it incase it was a wounded pet, or an escaped one. The figure drew her into the forest, when it started to snow very hard, & tomake things worse she was lost in the massive pine forest. She came to an area where it was slippery, she fell, & hit her head, she was knocked unconscious.
When she awakened, she was in a cave............. she looked around to see several wolves, one staggered up to here, appearing to be docile. Pitying the poor thing, she mended it's leg with a bandage & some willow bark, as well as a small splint. She & the Wolves live harmoniously for 2 full years, she made a cabin, nothing special, but it got her by.
One night when she was 15, she heard barking from outside, she ran out to see a pack of black wolves killing her friends, she killed some but was again knocked unconscious. When she aroused, all her friends lay dead in the snow.
Mourning she traveled for about 1 day until she found Nome, where she is today...
~Chapter I: 1 year later~
I stood on the top of a hill over looking the little town of Nome.
I've lived in Nome for a year, since 1926, I made a little job at the trading post where i help translate for the inuits. I have a little cabin at the edge of town near the shipyard, it is about 2 stories, the first floor has a little kitchen a bathroom, & a small living room, upstairs I have a bedroom with an are for me to store some herbs i found in the forest.
Since I lived with wolves for 2 years I adapted to their language, I understand any form of canine. (& for anyone who doesn't know, bears are in an extended branch of the canine family)
I haven't spoke of my upbringing around wolves & inuits, most of the dogs ( I haven't talked to them yet, I have just listened to them. they don't know i can understand them.) & the people here all seem to despise wolves intensively. I wouldn't want anyone to know & can speak with dogs either.
I haven't spoken to any dogs here because I want to find the perfect moment to let them know it, or maybe because I'm just plain shy. Im going to some time, sometime soon..... I can feel it, because on one night at the shipyard................
~Chapter II: Megan meets Balto~
One night I was wandering the shipyard exploring. After I lived at Nome for a year I had never went near the shipyard. Many of the boats & ships were broken, none very attractive, but one got my attention very well, why I didn't know. I assumed the old barge was abandoned so i walked up on it. At the bow i could see most of the town, it was really beautiful.
I heard glass break behind me....... I turned around to see one of the dogs from town, he was a brownish-gray color with obvious markings that he was half wolf. He looked curiously at me, I was just standing at the bow staring so he probrobly was wondering why I didn't either runaway, or scream & fight him (obviously he wouldn't know if I could understand him, so i decided to start off, since he would understand ME whether i could understand HIM).
"Hi there" I whispered making my voice sound a little nervous, "sorry, did i walk on your home?"
Just then arust colored husky came out, the two started whispering to each other. The only thing I heard was, "who is she?".
I thought that was my move, " My name is Megan what's yours?"
"You can understand us?" asked the Rust-colored husky.
"Yes i can" I replied.
"But how" asked the gray wolf-dog, "I thought humans couldn't understand us."
"In a matter of speaking," I said" they cant, i was raised by wo-dogs for 2 years"
"You were raised by wolves weren't you?" asked the rust colored female.
"yes", I said, "but don't tell anyone."
"Why not," asked the wolf-dog.
" Just please don't." I said.
"alright if your so desperate." said the girl dog.
"well, Im not desperate, I just know how much the people & some of the dogs in this town hate them so much." i said.
"I know the feeling," said the wolf-dog, "my name is Balto, this is Jenna, & yours is Megan, am I right?"
"Yup, its Megan," I said, "Are you & Jenna mates?"
"Well..........," said Balto, "yes we are."
"Well its a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, " I replied, "its the first time I've talked to a dog ever, it was always wolves so its very special, nor have I ever spoken to such a beautiful wolf-dog." I replied.
At that, Balto blushed, or at least it looked it.
~Chapter III: Megan sees loner~
So far, Balto & Jenna are the only dogs I new, but that changed the night after the night I met balto.
Past the shipyard to one side was the Bering sea, to the other a deep desolate wilderness. Balto & I we're talking one night. Mainly about me, he wanted to know about my past a little more, & I trusted him.
"Oh," He said after I was through with my story," I guess you & I have a little more in common than I thought.
"How?" I asked
"My family was killed as well, not by another wolf pack, but by," He stopped,"actually I really don't know, I came out of the den & they were all dead."
"That's so sad." I said, "to not even know how your family died.
"Yeah," He said, " But after that I moved here.........."
He told me about the Diphtheria case, & all about, Steele, the bear, the whitewolf, & how even when he came back, he chose the life of a stray again.
"Why would you still choose that sort of life," I asked, " I mean, didn't someone offer you a home, you saved many children's lives."
"hmmmmmmm....." Balto thought,"I think it's because I......... have always lived in the wild, I guess I didn't want to leave that."
"That's really sweet," I said," You have pride within yourself, That's sonoble."
Later that night I was sitting on the bow of the boat, looking towards the forest. As I was looking I saw a black & white husky, he looked as if he was scavenging for food at the edge of the forest.
"Balto," I said, " Who is that?"
"Hmmmm," he nodded," remember the other dog who was the one who was always bullying me, & got the dog team lost?"
"Steele?" I asked.
" Yup, That's him," Balto said," after the sled got lost his owner, who was the musher was knocked unconscious, well a week later........ he died, from hypothermia."
" I know he was a jerk," but why is he a stray now?"
" I honestly don't know." replied Balto.
"hmmmmmm." I thought.
I ran to the forests edge, it was dark in the forest, & to make it worse it was snowing. Since it was almost the end of winter, the snow was very sticky & slushy.
"Ill try tomorrow." I said to myself.
~Chapter IV: Le mechante lupe: The Mean Wolf~
The next day i walked to the edge of the forest. The snow was rapidly melting, spring was very near. Inside the forest, there was no snow, instead there were little pools of water in ravines, & ditches where snow had been.
I walked until i came to an area were minni tributaries of melted snow were running into a small creek. I peered into the water, the water was moving very fast, but you could just see the small rocks at the bottom.
I looked across the creek, past the creek bed, there was a small little cliff, it was only about 5 feet high. I crossed the little creek on some petruding stones from the fast current. As i past a little bush i saw the inside of a cave. I didn't know why I went in, maybe it was the little drip i heard from the caves roof, or perhaps it was that i was looking for adventure, either one, i entered the cave.
Inside there was stalagmites, & stalactites (little builds up of calcium making the little jagged rocks that petruded from the ground, & the ceilings). I entered farther, then i heard a little bit of grunting from around a corner.
On the other side there was a dingy looking old Alaskan malamute, with black & white fur. He looked vaguely familiar. Although his back was turned i noticed him........ STEELE!
He was knawing on the remains of a bone. Although i knew how much of a bully, & a jerk he was, i pitied him, it was probrobly my constant sympathy for animals, but .......... i don't know.
I heard a stick break behind me, i whirled around as fast as a bolt of lightning. Behind me was a black wolf, his eyes were full of hatred, you could hear the snarling without even bearing his teeth.
Steele heard this & peered behind the corner, i don't know which he hated more, me or the wolf, but he leapt at the wolf first. The wolf & him were snarling, biting, & growling, but you can guess who won, the wolf.
The wolf knocked steele on the ground, he was knocked out, all cut up & stuff. Then the wolf was moving towards me. I didn't know what to do, it was such a long time since i fought, but i did manage through that battle........
He leapt at me with completed ferocity, i reacted by instinct, & did a back walkover, feet knocking him right in the jaw, causing him to wail & fall back.
But this guy just wouldn't quit, he kept on snarling, circling me, & sometimes nipping at me. But enough was enough, i kicked him in the face........ five times in a row. (lol) He quit after that & ran away.
I turned around to face Steele he was out like a light. He was very badly bruised, cuts & teeth marks all over, mainly on his head.
"Darn! These cuts are numerous deep, he needs a vet ASAP!" I though to myself.
~Chapter V: The vet~
Inside the vet's office..........
It was very cold inside, the vet was looking at Steele then me, & then Steele again.
"Where did you say you found him Megan?", He asked.
"He was in a cave," I replied.
"but, how in the word did he get all these claw & bite marks all over him?" the vet asked.
"Well, this morning i went out for a walk in the woods," I started,"i found a small cave, & i walked inside. i don't know why, but he was in there."
"But that does not explain the marks." he said.
"well, i saw him, he didn't see me though, he only noticed me when he heard a stick break..." I said," but the broken stick wasn't me, sir, it was this.... black wolf, this dog tried to save me, he got in a fight."
"what became of the wolf, Megan?" he asked.
"i kicked him in the head," i answered,"but he ran away, i don't know where he went."
"Well," he started,"this poor dog wouldn't have survived if you didn't get rid of the wolf would he?"
"Well sir," I started," i feel he wouldn't be like this if i wasn't there."
"Well, he doesn't seem to have rabies, but there may be a chance..." he said.
"Sir, the wolf wasn't disease," i started yet again,"the only strange fact was that he was out early."
"Well, we'll give this old boy the shots anyways just incase, he'll be just fine." he said.
"But....." he stated," we'll bandage him up, is it okay of he stays with you, we would keep him here, but these cuts aren't that bad, but keep in mind to make sure he doesn't go outside until they are better." he stated," that will take about 2 weeks."
"yes sir." i answered.
~Chapter VI: Steele awakens~
I started a fire in the fireplace, i watched the ember's sparks swirl up the chimney, like a leaf in the wind. i had some chicken stew heating on the stove, the aroma filled the air. It was later that night after the vet's, I took Steele home, he was still out like a light. his sides were bandaged, his paws were as well.
I placed by the fire on a pillow large enough to fit his body on. i sat on the big chair in front of him, watching the fire. the aroma of the stew was growing, i could hear it start to bubble.
I got up & turned off the stove, & placed the stew on the table so it could cool.
I heard a rustle from near the fire. I walked over, I saw that Steele's eyes were wide open. He was looking around, i saw that he was terrified, for his whole body was shaking.
"don't worry, no one is going to hurt you now." I whispered to him.
~Chapter VII: Advocate~
"I am the girl from the cave." I said," remember?"
"yeah." he answered. His voice was very weak.
"well," i said, grabbing some stew & placing it into a porcelain dish." you better eat, w'ell talk in the morning, your body is gaunt so eat it all."
I walked upstairs after giving it to Steele. I laid on my bed, then drifted to sleep.
For the first time in two years, I had another horrid dream, it may have been from seeing that wolf, i didn't know why at the time.
In my dream i kept seeing a whole pack of black wolves, killing my pack, the memories were flying past, but i saw a familiar wolf in the background....... it was the black wolf. I never told anyone this, but i got some of their names, Devil, (how obvious, lol) Nightshade, Bane, & Advocate. Bane seemed to be the leader, Advocate, was a lesser minion, & he look just like the wolf i fought in the cave............... that spooked me beyond belief!
"The pack is around Nome!" i woke up, shouting.
It was in the middle of the night, but i got dressed. I ran down the cabin stairs, Steele was sleeping by the fire, the hot embers were all that was left.
I ran out to the barge that Balto lived in.
"Balto........" i said.
"What's wrong Megan?" he answered.
" Balto you aren't safe here!" I practically yelled. "You need to come home with me, i'll tell you why there.
~Chapter VIII: The Congregation at the mill~
I opened the door to the saw mill, all of the dogs in the town were chattering amongst themselves. But once they saw me, they sat still, not moving at all.
"This is Megan," started Balto,"She has very urgent news."
"What is it?" a dog from the crowd asked.
"We... are going to be invaded," i answered, " by wolves."
