The Kubwa Jua Tales: The Opposite (Preview)
By CB, aka Syma

Here's a special sneek peek at my upcomming (and first!) TLK Fanfic:

As Kahtek and Ziru reached the end of the tunnel, the presence of ice and fire in the air grew stronger.  Kahtek was the first to enter the small chamber, and the feel of it astounded him. The crystal, now hanging on a vine around his neck due to Ziru’s handywork, seemed to glow stronger in the mysterious chamber.  The walls and floor of the cave were made of black stone.  He stopped, puzzled as he began to walk on it.  When his right paw touched the stone, it felt icy cold; yet when the left paw touched it, the stone seemed burning hot.  It was almost painful for the cub to walk across the strange surface, but after a short while, he grew accustomed to it.
Now he stood at the center of the chamber, with the entrance tunnel behind him, and two tunnels on either side of him.  Ziru was already inspecting the one to Kahtek’s right, and the cub moved to joinhim.
"Kahtek..." the meerkat gestured him closer, obviously quite intrigued by the tunnel.  As the cub approached, he noticed a distinct difference in both the air, the ground, and his crystal. Everything felt so cold, the air held wisps of ice, and he could see his breath.  Against his chest, the right side, the blue side of the crystal glowed, and felt freezing cold.  He also noticed that he had no feeling in his left paw, only the right one, and that one only felt the icy cold of the smooth black stone.  As Kahtek and Ziru looked down the tunnel, they gasped.
The ground was covered in ice and small piles of snow.  it seemed to be snowing inside the tunnel.  As the two companions traveled through the tunnel into the chamber beyond, Kahtek began to become convinced that Ziru’s tales of the crystal’s power were indeed true.  Snow covered the icy cave floor, and continued to drift down.  The crystal’s glow and icy feel was even stronger now, stronger than he’d ever felt it except when he’d used it to free himself from the hole.
"You were right Ziru, about the crystal I mean.  Here, feel it."  The meerkat reached forward to touch the crystal, feeling both the now dull red side, and the glowing blue side.
"The blue side, it’s icy cold!  And the red side feels just like any other plain, regular crystal.  And looks dull too." he then looked around the chamber, "I think I know what this is Kahtek, but I want to see the other tunnel first, just to be sure."
And so Ziru and Kahtek left the freezing cold cave, and made their way to the other one.  As they entered the tunnel, it happened again, just like the first one, only the exact opposite.  This time it was Kahtek’s right forepaw that had no feeling, and the left pained him as he touched the burning hot ground.  The stone here was black as well, but rough, not smooth. They followed the tunnel, once again finding a chamber, no less fascinating.  The entire cave floor was on fire, steam burned in their eyes, and falling ashes dotted Kahtek’s white pelt.  Ziru yelped as a hot coal suddenly singed the fur on his tail.  He reached for Kahtek’s crystal,
"Red side’sburning to the touch!" he said, jerking his hand away suddenly, then he felt the other side,
"Nothing, dull and feels perfectly normal."  Kahtek was suddenly aware of the crystal’s heat burning through his pelt to singe his tender skin.
"I was right," began Ziru, "These are the realms of Kahmeka and Tekmoto.  The crystal revealed them."
Kahtek suddenly began to back out ofthe cave.  Something was very wrong, this place didn’t feel right.  An anger surged through him, and then he realized it wasn’t just within him, it was all over, in the air.  He rushed out quickly, not stopping until he was at the center of the main cave again.  Ziru soon followed.
    "You okay?"
"Didn’t you feel it Ziru?  The anger and hate, it was all over that place!  The other one feltso peaceful, so calm."
"What you felt was undoubtedly Tekmoto’s anger.  I felt some of it, but the crystal enhances your feel of it, you’re changed Kahtek.  Almost as if they live inside you, or in that crystal of yours."
Kahtek looked down in silence for a moment, then looked up suddenly. "What did you say before I ran out?  I didn’t hear you."
"They’re the realms Kahtek, we’ve discovered the realms of Kahmeka and Tekmoto!"
